Whenever you think of movie tie-in games, you generally assume that they will be of lesser quality. This is usually because of a rushed development cycle. Well, when checking out Star Trek at E3 last week, most of those concerns were laid to rest.

Star Trek takes place in between the movie we've already seen and the one releasing next year. You play the game as either Spock or Kirk, with either a friend or A.I. buddy taking control of the other character. Make no mistake though, this game is designed to be co-op.
Speaking of co-op, both characters have different play styles. Spock leans towards a more subtle approach, whereas Kirk tends to act like the cowboy he is. One example during the demo was when the characters launch themselves into the Enterprise with rockets Spock lands gracefully, but Kirk pushes himself a little further and has a rougher landing. Their weapons are also different, Kirk's weapon is almost like a revolver. It's big, heavy and packs a punch. Spock's weapon is quick, fast and has a stun mode that is different than your normal phaser, it leaves the enemy unaware they were attacked.
Your tricorder will also be an invaluable asset, from scanning dead red shirts to overloading panels to disable enemies, you'll always find a use for the ubiquitous tool.

The game will have a large scope, you'll go from underwater environments, to hijacking enemy vessels to making zero G jumps onto moving ships.
Star Trek looks like it will be a lot of fun. The co-op campaign looks like it will be a blast and seeing the different tactics that you can use as either Spock or Kirk was very interesting. Will Star Trek break the cycle of mostly bad Trek games? It sure seems that way. Look for the game next year on PC, PS3 and 360.

Looks pretty good, animation looked stiff in some places but I'll put that down to it being pre-alpha.

Did you see the new movie? It may not be Star Trek TOS/TNG/DS9/VOY/ENT, but it is definitely Star Trek 2009.

The good Star Trek is long gone. Replaced with..."The Rock" version of Star Trek, written by what can only be assumed as some kind of retarded monkey. I basically had to force myself to just accept it in all its horridness and move on. Good enemies, rivals, and much of what made Star Trek enjoyable is gone forever replace by ninja Spoke and lispy Kirk. Good times:(
But just cause the movie wasn't Star Trek doesn't mean the developers can/are trying to recover it.

Simple, just go watch First Contact and I guarantee that theme will be stuck in your head instead.

Yes.
In theaters, in Imax. I also own it on Blu-Ray. My wife liked it immediately, but it took a while for me to be ok with it. I just think of it as "action guy IN SPACE" and everything's good.
The music is insane though. Love the music.

This.
had they removed the star trek name it would have been a sweet action movie all on it's own.

Goddamn co-op. Seriously.
Even if it were based on the older Star Treks, co-op makes perfect sense. Star Trek is all about the crew working together, using their unique skills to solve problems.

The dude who gets to play Rudy Red Shirt will sure be pissed.
Also, the Wrath of Khan sucked.

Actually that is how I take it and I am fine with "Action Guys In Space". Totally fine with that. No need to have Rebooted if the Reboot was in name only. It would be as if Superman was a flawed human with a child and was basically a deadbeat dad...oh wait...;)

If decades of varying comics, Batman: The Animated Series, the Dark Knight Trilogy, and Batman: The Brave and the Bold can all coexist as beloved aspects of a diverse franchise, what's wrong with having two visually and stylistically distinct versions of Star Trek?

Not sure anyone said...there was anything wrong with it.
But my assumption is those Batman shows, comics, coffee mugs, all have many things in common.
Moreso than character names and a ship name thus sharing far more than the new Star Trek with the old ones. They probably also carried a shared theme across all formats. Something that the new Star Trek was sorely missing. And probably the most important thing to me personally.

Really? What's the unifying theme that connects Batman: The Brave and Bold with the recent Dark Knight movie? One that's stronger than the connection between previous Star Trek shows/movies and ST:2009.

Hidden character, back kicking, Nano sword carrying Sulu? My guess at least. Or maybe he will be playing Shepard...I mean Captain Kirk.
Wait...he wouldn't play Spock would he:)
Undertaking shock slam, every strike is a block every block is a strike, Spock!
I hope there are hidden characters I would love to play as Pike rolling around in my electric wheelchair.

Uhm...not sure why you are asking me. I have no clue about the various Batman's.
Thus me stating "MY ASSUMPTION".
But it seems you have some issue with the new Star Trek not getting the love it needs from me.
I can email you a pic of me hugging the Blu-ray case...but other than that, I can't think of much else to say.
EDIT: But if any of them have Alfed as a nut kicking ninja I would be super stoked to watch, read, listen, or have it mentally imprinted on my brain.

It's always just amusing to me to see people saying "This isn't Star Trek!" I love Star Trek as much as the next huge geek, especially TOS and TNG, and ST:2009 definitely carries many of the same themes of heroism, teamwork, bold actions, and facing the unknown. The varied characters were introduced with the same archetypes as TOS, even if their ass-kicking nature took front stage for now.
I have no problem with people not liking Star Trek 2009, but I am interested in exploring someone's reason for declaring that it shouldn't have carried the Star Trek name.
