I've read War of the Worlds a few times, listened to the radio show and saw the more recent movie. You could say I am a fan of the story. So when I was told I would be seeing a new War of the Worlds game, I was pretty interested in what Other Ocean Interactive had to offer.

So, let's get this out of the way, the game is not based on the more recent movie. It is a re-imagining of the original story, this time set around the mid 20th century. You're in control of a normal guy, just trying to get out of London to find your family.
If you've ever played the original Prince of Persia or Out of This World then you'll have a pretty good idea of what the game play will be like. Your job is not necessarily to defeat the Martians, but simply avoid them and survive. That sensibility only reinforces the desperate nature of your character's struggle to live.
Some hazards will instantly kill your character, but the game also has a lot of "near death" situations that you will be warned about. This basically means that you may be warned that you probably won't survive that fall or perhaps wandering into that black smoke is a poor decision. Warnings are also given by the narrator, voiced by Patrick Stewart in the form of the main character telling his story.

Speaking of Prince of Persia, this game mimics the old rotoscope look of that game. I am personally of big fan of the art style and wouldn't mind seeing a few more games of this look and feel hit the market.
This game looks and feels like a love letter to the book. It captures the feel of some classic 2d platformers and has a wonderful look to it. Keep your eyes open for when this hits XBLA and PSN in the fall.
