There are hidden gems at every E3. Something you never really expected to catch your attention or something you’d completely passed over, only to find out that it’s actually very good.

The gem this year for me was Skylanders from Activision. I know, I know…just be patient and stick with me for a minute. Skylanders takes place in the Spyro The Dragon universe. I don’t know the story of the game, and that’s mainly because I was too distracted in what it was doing and what it could do.

You see…this game is played unlike any other game I can think of. You have a portal base. I don’t think that’s the technical term, but whatever. You have this portal base and you have what are called Champions. They are the characters you control in the game. Except, they aren’t in the game. They are these little figurines. You place the figurine on the portal base and he’s then created in the game. From there, you can play as that champion and level him up and outfit him with new gear and all sorts of stuff. But maybe you’re bored playing as that champion, just take him off the portal base right in the middle of play and put a new character on it. Moments later, there’s your character, right there in the game.

It doesn’t stop there. That one character you leveled up and customized? Yeah, you can then take him over to a friends place and if he has the full game with the portal base, you just put him on it and there he is in the game. Just as you left him. Same level experience (not the same stage you left him on, mind you), same customizations. Not only that, it doesn’t matter what version of the game your friend has. The character figurines are universal. They can be played on any platform the game releases on.

You don’t even need the full game. You can by these figurines separately ($7.99 each) and just take them over to a friends place and play using their full version. Everything you do with that character is saved to the figurine. No memory cards. No save menus. It’s just there.

But wait, there’s more! While playing the game should one of your champions die, you just pick up another champion and place them on the portal base and you’re off again. The character that died will not be able to be played again until the level is finished. Every champion you own represents how many lives you have in the game.

And you may end up owning quite a few. Activison plans to have over 30 champions available. The starter pack will contain the game, the portal base, 3 champions, 3 trading cards and a poster for $69.99. There will be 20 levels in the game total with a run through expected to take 10-12 hours, although given you have 30 champions to play with through the game, the number of hours played could grow much larger. You can also play the main campaign co-op. Just put two champions on the portal base and there you go – two-player co-op.

You can expect to see Skylanders on store shelves this holiday season for the Wii, 360, PS3, and PC – and any figurine can play on any of those platforms.

That's interesting. The cynic in me thinks it's a blatant cash grab, but I reckon I would have found it an amazingly cool idea when I was a kid. The fact that you can buy one of the toys and play on someone else's copy of the game without owning it yourself does make me slightly more favourably inclined towards the idea.

This was my surprise game of E3 too. Very slick and inventive and kids are gonna eat it up. They just need some kind of TV show tie in to complete it.

Even if it is a cash grab, it's great to see products like these getting development effort time, especially in the house of Call of Duty.

As an adult I'm even interested in this. I doubt I'll get into it, but I am definitely wishing I had a kid to play this with. Things like this are one of reasons I can't wait to start a family.

I must say that the new design of Spyro is awful. He went from being cute to being "extreme" or something. :/

So its basically Heroclix for the console...

Well that's just adorable. Wonder how diabloish it will be, or how randomized. Seems like it could be a mess of fun.

I'd love to play this with my son, honestly.

This would be great to play with my nephew whenever I go home to visit. Must say, Spyro used to be one of my favorites. I like that it's still out there developing.

Of course, no mention of actual gameplay yet.

Yeah, I'll be doing the same now when I'm over at the family's place during the holidays.

By the way, welcome to the Colony!

I definitely think that may be what I get him and my niece for the holidays this year. Would be nice to see them playing together for once, hahaha!

Thanks for the warm welcome! Really is an awesome community here. :)

As a side note, anyone else find that they tend to hear about any genuinely new and interesting stuff a couple of days after a big show? It seems like you have to wait for all the chatter about Call of Elderfield 4:VitaU Uncharted Infinite Rage XIII-2 to get out of the way before the lesser-known games get a look in.

Rise From Your Grave!

It's out now! Anyone else going to get it? My son's GiGi (His great grandma) bought him two of the figures and I want to get him the whole set. 70 bucks for the starter set, 20 bucks for the pirate set, and 8 bucks each figure. It looks like a lot of fun, and I honestly can't wait to try it out with my son.

I've been playing the 3DS version for the past week and it's a blast with my son. Grabbed a handful of extra figures and the pirate set this weekend, so that'll be me sorted for a while. Hoping to get the 360 version for Christmas, I've dropped enough hints to the missus, then we'll try some proper co-op.

I like how the handheld and console versions are totally different games, so I'll be able to have a different experience with our leveled characters.

One gripe is that, while I love the idea of the flash game being a totally different experience again it's buggy as all get out, and it's been frustrating to register the figures online. It dies have a big BETA warning in the main title, so I can live with issues until something resembling a final version is available.

Now, do you need the key codes that come with the figures for online stuff, or can you play by using the base?

Gonna get the 360 or PS3 version soon (his Early X-Mas gift and my partial Birthday gift for myself, since I know we'll both enjoy it :D). I had no idea the 3DS version was different...how so?

And I heard you can use the figures on anyone's portal, so therefore any system. Any truth to this?

Yeah, the characters are universal, so no matter who you get the figure itself will work with all platforms.

The 3DS version is more of a straight up Platformer, ala Crash bandicoot, with various challenges such as collecting a certain amount of gems or killing a certain amount of enemies. It seems a lot more geared towards younger gamers than the home console versions. It is single player only, though, which means no real co-op options.

Every pack comes with online codes, so if you're registering your guys you can just put that in, but it looses some of the 'oomph' than you would get from putting the toys on the portal and just seeing them magically appear. You can also use the portal to update your online versions, but again, I've not really been able to try that, since it keeps saying my Portal is either not installed or not connected.

There's supposed to be an in-game code you can use to update your characters, but I haven't found anything like that yet in the 3DS version.

That's good. His GiGi threw away the packs, and ONLY kept the figures and their stat cards. So no online codes or stickers (Bought him one today as I eyed the whole set). Good to know I can simply get it online and do extra stuff there anyway.

I spent about the same amount on him last year for X-Mas, so I am really thinking of splurging for this early so he and I can both enjoy it. I also may get a 3DS because it's a good excuse to get it for that as well :p

Give the support guys an email, tell them you didn't get the stickers and codes. I was missing a few of the character cards in my starter set and they were happy to just post them to me.

Any excuse is a good excuse for a 3DS :p

Obviously just going on conjecture here, but I'd say just go for the starter pack for your system of choice and a whole bunch of the figures, then maybe do the 3DS and game for a birthday later in the year?

You'd probably be able to pick up both much cheaper by then. In the meantime you'd probably get more value out of the actual sitting together co-op element of the home consoles.

Yeah, I really want the co-op aspect of it for he and I.
