WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Interest in President-elect Barack Obama's inauguration is running so high that one ticket broker is asking $20,095 for a single ticket.

Entry to the biggest event in Washington is free if your congressman or senator grants your request, but with demand outpacing supply a traditional giveaway has turned into a thriving online marketplace.

Legitimate ticket brokers -- the same companies that peddle tickets to rock concerts and NASCAR races -- are selling tickets to the swearing-in of Barack Obama for thousands of dollars, even for standing-room areas on the National Mall.

Organizers of the inauguration say it violates the spirit of the event and could spell disappointment for people who buy tickets for the January 20 ceremony.

This is a bit ridiculous...I know it will be a historic moment and all but damn. 20,000 for a ticket? I see e-bay auctions going now for $30k and $10k. I've never heard of such interest for an inauguration.....hell there were probably some of these events in the past where you could hear a pin drop.

The problem is no one has any tickets yet: these brokers may as well be selling unicorns that crap rainbows. It's a big scam right now. If you simply write you your representatives - Senate or House - you may be able to get tickets for free.

I have no problem with people throwing money away. Can I watch it on TV for free? Okay, then. :)

With the way tickets are going they might want to consider PPV.

No. The tickets are supposed to be free, but some dealers are trying to cash in on Obamamania and make a buck. Most of which are flat out scams.

Seeing Obama would be great, but for my money I'd rather get one of those rainbow-crapping unicorns.

This is a bit ridiculous...

I can name quite a few things that have taken a turn in that direction - have you heard about the group try to get a holiday for the man? He'll have to do something truly exceptional (like world peace) to make me think about anything more than the regular holiday celebrating him, but on top of that, it'd be nice to know the man didn't plunge is into WWIII during his term before we set aside days honoring him...

One does not honor a man simply for becoming president.
