Anyone heard of this game, Theresia? It's a horror adventure game for the DS that came out back on 10/30. I'd heard nothing about it before reading this (http://diehardgamefan.com/2008/11/10/review-theresia-nds/) glowing review over at Diehard GameFAN and now I'm curious. Heck, I had to search on YouTube just to find a trailer:
oLz70D_5zBQ
The game looks surprisingly good for something that's been out for almost 2 weeks and I've never even heard of it. I may have to track this down later on in the year.

Looks like the biggest budget thing about that is the cutscenes, but it could be a decent adventure game. I have a friend who plays these types of games more than I do, I'll see if she's heard of it.

I didn't quite get what the hell was going on, but it sure seemed interesting.
Besides its from the same company that makes the Guilty Gear games, so I might have to give this a try.

Thanks Gorvi for the tip on this. The game looks great. Not sure how Avnovice missed this...
Also thanks for the link to a site I haven't heard of. The name alone got me curious...Diehard gamefan?? Brought back some memories. Not the same crew but a sorta spiritual successor...

Resurrect thread!
Anyone play this? I finally received it from Gamefly. I just started playing and i'm loving it. If you like point and click adventures this is for you. I think the game actually punishes you for looking around foolishly to much. I haven't had that happen since I played text adventure games.
Spigot, I think you need to track down a copy. Otherwise i'm going to guest one of your turning the Spigot when i'm done with this game :).
Edit: Thanks again Gorvi for an awesome find!

In this adventure game, players will take on the roles of two different characters trying to understand out their past, present, and intertwined destiny. Will you be able to discover the true meaning of theresia?
It is a tale of twisted love between a mother and her daughter. Raised from the ashes of war and torture, Leanne has no memory of her past. Will she find the true meaning of her existence through her past, or will she be consumed by her destined future?
The protagonist, a brilliant doctor and owner of the local orphanage, develops a vaccine to combat the high fever that has affected the children in his orphanage. Unfortunately, as with every great creation, his discovery comes only at great cost. Will he be able to atone for his mistake, or will his creation end mankind?
Ign gives it a 7.1, so kinda mediocre.
Looks pretty low budget to me.

I thought you might of since I haven't seen anything from you on it. It's pretty straight forward point and click adventure game. I think it's ease of play so far has me hooked. I'm a sucker for good creepy music and a "where am I, how did I get here" plot. And what is this i'm looking at dialogue.

You certainly have a nice backlog of DS games to play. This won't tax your brain like those I think. I like the ease of use so far.

It's a DS game. How high budget does a game get? Unless we are talking Square Enix...
IGN etc, they suck. I take their reviews with a grain of salt. That said, a 7 is still considered a "good" game. But like I said originally, it's for anyone that is a point and click adventure lover. If you liked Hotel Dusk, Time Hollow and the rest...this will appeal to you. I don't think it's as "complex" as those games, but I wasn't looking for some mind bending game either. It's got some great creepy music with the cheesy plot i'm sure. But it's fun. The main device in this game is if it can keep you going...tease you along that you NEED to know more. So far it's done that for me.

They also gave the Phoenix Wright games an average of 7.8. Plus PW looks low budget.
Yet that's still my favorite series on the DS.
In other words: IGN sucks.

So...there is no real-time combat or anything like that in this game? It's more like a Shadowgate type of game?

Shadowgate....ooooo...now i'll be looking for my old disc :)
It's all point and click, so yes like Shadowgate. It's more about the "puzzles" and trying not to have yourself harmed while you are searching.

I picked this up earlier today and played it for about 10 minutes.
It's definitely quite interesting and I'm digging it so far, although it looks like it'll be a while before you get into the real meat of the game once you're past all the tutorial stuff. It's definitely got a dark vibe where the building itself hates you and tries to kill you at every turn.
The fact that there are two storylines (where you get to play the other once you've beaten the first) seems like an extra bonus.
I'm looking forward to playing some more later tonight.

I disagree, I think that IGN has pretty decent reviews.
(However it all depends if you agree with the reviewers themselves. And apparently I do [most of the time])

Going to keep this thread on topic and step around this minefield of a discussion on IGN and reviews...if you found games such as Time Hollow, Hotel Dusk and Trace Hollow to name a few then you would be interested in Theresia. If you haven't played any of those games, well they can be found cheap and you should try them.

This game went from a nice little distraction to consuming my weekend. I'm only about half way but I'm now determined to finish. This has to be one of the more disturbing plots i've seen in a video game. I know many don't like point and click because it can be a tad tedious looking for clues. I think what I have liked about this game is most of the puzzles are contained to small areas. It's not like puzzles in Silent Hill where you traipsed through half an area trying to find where a piece of inventory goes or needs to be used. So I think it's a great starter for those who haven't ever tried a point and click. And it moves quickly so it's not as tedious as some other point and click adventures can get. I think the music and the alluring plot will make amends for those who get antsy.
Anyone ever decide to try it? Spigot I know you picked it up but it seemed you were bogged down with P4...

I hope you enjoy it.
I finally made it to the "twist/revelation" part of the story. With a point and click, let's face it, if the story sucks or can't keep you moving forward then it just won't work as a game. I loved the revelation. I think the story is simple but with grander themes that certainly could be discussed. The story very much reminds me of The World Ends With You, where the plot itself was a bit two dimensional but it was the themes from the story that (for me anyway) transcended the story. If I was still teaching, I would have loved to use the themes in this story for a class.

I finished the game and decided to go see the review you were referring to. As usual and as many have argued with online reviews, the text of the review doesn't match the final score. Reading the review there were mostly positive things to say about the game. What seemed to "annoy" the reviewer was how he was "punished" for exploring. The traps that are set while exploring can be offset but the reviewer felt this would take to long. I'm the first one to bitch about sometimes developers stretching out a game for no reason other than to be more difficult to extend playing time. The point of the traps in this game actually are part of the storyline. The traps make complete sense in the game. I'm just trying to point this out EvsD cause online reviews aren't what they seem. I think you are missing out on a good game if the only reason you didn't buy this was due to the review.
The game has two stories. So it's actually two games. I didn't realize this when I was playing through. So for $30, at first I wasn't sure if this would be worth to buy at full price. I was dead wrong. The game lasted longer and only started to drag a bit at the end. I blame that on playing way to long while being to enthralled with the plot. I knew nothing about the game's plot and it's better I think going in not knowing anything.
It starts out as a typical don't know who I am etc type of plot and with the environment being as it was in the game I thought it was going to be the usual storyline that has been done in games and movies many times before. While I can't say the story reads like classic literature, it is a wicked plot with some thought provoking themes. As the plot thickens, so do the puzzle solving strategies. The game starts off holding your hand a bit with the puzzles while staying manageable. Then at a certain point, they do get kicked up a notch and while not Professor Layton difficult, they are challenging of the point and click kind. If you really enjoyed the puzzle elements in Hotel Dusk, you will be very comforted with them in Theresia.
I told myself last night I was going to take a break for the second story but the game's music is already haunting me, luring me to play more. I really need to spend some time with some other games. Must say no...for now...

Were you hoarding your elixirs? I did and found if I used them I probably wouldn't of had any game overs. I wish the game allowed to hold more than 9 of them. Otherwise i thought the elixirs were fairly abundant, which was nice. Of course i was hoarding them since I was never sure if suddenly they would stop appearing so much.

Yes and no. I quickly maxed them out, only using them if I took too much damage. Of course, boobytraps are real easy to avoid, so I only end up getting injured out of carelessness.
Note: I was crusing along in the last stage of the "dear Emile" storyline. I got to the point where I used the culture pool key to unlock the door, and ran face first into poisonous gas.

There were times I purposefully injured myself to see the heinous new and different ways I could be injured. That sounded really disturbing. I blame that on the game
Yes, so lovely that there was gas where you least expected it. The developers don't make it easy to "leave" the place. If something didn't "leave" the inventory, it was nice hint from the game to say "you will need this" so keep that in mind at all times.

I finally truly finished this game. fifty hours to complete. If anyone was still thinking about the game, is it worth it? $30 for a fifty hour game? I would think so.
There have been game stories/plots that have moved me. I know there have been moments from other games that has held me me captive. Theresia, the story and especially the end will be in my top 5 stories and endings. This ending moved me like so few endings in a game. I am sure it wouldn't wow everyone. I am not here to argue it's some top written story that competes with a novel. It's not. Is it moving? Yes. Will it hit upon some emotional level with you? I am going out on a limb and say yes it will. The music intertwined with the story as you regain your memory keeps you moving and not wanting to put this game down. I can't believe such beautiful and at times haunting music came from my DS. I wish there was a soundtrack. I would buy it in a second for almost any price.
If you love adventure games or have an interest buy this game. I would suggest to those who never tried an adventure game but like a "story" in a game, you owe it to yourself to buy it. I know Spigot spotlighted this on TTS but it can't be said enough...if you own an DS, buy this game. If you keep an open mind, I think it will lure you into it's very deep world. The last time I went around banging a drum about a game this much was last year for The World Ends With You. As much as I could I mentioned that game to anyone that would listen. I'm going to do the same this year with Theresia.
Gorvi, once again thanks for finding this game. You really unearthed quite a treasure.

Treat yourself. I don't often jump up and down to tell people to buy a game. Game tastes vary so much...but being a DS gamer, I think I can confidently say you will like this game. I would almost guarantee it and send your money back if you hated it, that's how sure I am. Unfortunately, I would only be able to send some monopoly money since I don't have any of the real kind :p

The problem ( for me anyway ) is most of the games don't thrill me at all yet. I mean given the choice , DS game or Ipod Touch game..well it is a no brainer for me. What games do you like on the Touch? Also this game Theresia sounds interesting. When you say there are 2 stories..do you mean 1 story that you can then play with a different character or 2 seperate storys with new puzzles , locations etc. Sorry but I skipped the reviews in this thread as to not get spoiled at all.

Sorry, i'll be more specific. Yes, there are TWO separate stories, different characters and different puzzles. So you are getting two games in one. Also, when you beat the game(s) at the end of each a "diary" opens up not only giving you all the information found in the game, it adds to the narrative to tie in all that you found in the game. After you finish, if the plot already bend your mind...play through the diaries.
I won't say more because I don't want to ruin it. I hope you buy it. I'd love to have more people to discuss about the game. And use earphones or whatever you may use for your DS. The sounds and music are amazing but even more so when you use earbuds.
