Ok, the iPod/iPhone have a thread for games...so what about Android phones?

I got my new phone recently, and I've been wondering what kinds of games are good for it. I love RPG and Rogue-likes but am not sure where to begin. Any suggestions?

Its pretty fucking abysmal actually. After Game Dev Story, Angry Birds and a few others, it drops off completely. I just picked up Cyberlords which is potential as a Shadowrun clone.

The Gamevil games are .99 each right now. Zenonia 1 + 2 and a couple others. Zenonia is like a Zelda game I think. I only played a bit but I own both now.

Steambirds is a pretty cool turn-based aerial combat game. It's like the web-based flash version, just with more stuff in it.

I keep meaning to pick up Spectral Souls too, that final fantasy tactics looking game. It just costs so much. (not $5 too much, $15 too much)

I have Game Dev Story and Galcon, myself. I may pick up Robot Unicorn Attack, now that it has been ported to Android; I would like Adult Swim to port more games to Android. If Zenonia 2 is really $0.99, I may pick it up, but I haven't been too fond of virtual d-pad games, so far. I also own an SNES emulator and don't play it for just that reason.

EDIT: Thinking about trying this other Gamevil game...

I hope they port the Metal version of RUA. Because death metal unicorns are the #1 unicorns.

AS games are fantastically addictive.

I downloaded the demo for Zenonia 2 yesterday, for the second time, but ended up not liking it. I simply find it too difficult to control. I bought Illusia (which doesn't have a demo) and found it to be a little easier to deal with, though I'm not sure why. It's also less... talky, than Zenonia 2, but still had more dialog than it needs. The graphics of both are certainly quite pleasant, at least.

RUA has massive issues right now. It currently force closes like crazy unless you have your phone in airplane mode. It is an issue across most phone models. Caveat emptor.

Games I currently have Installed:

Words with Friends*
Archmage* - it's Arcomage from M&M8.
Glow Puzzle* - it's a simple pathfinding puzzler, with like 400 levels. Simple, but diverting.
CityJump* - Basic single-tap game, but he does some fun seasonal things.
HexDefense* - Awesome TD game
Astral Command* - Interesting TD/RTS hybrid
3KTD* - Three Kingdoms Tower Defense - looks neat, haven't played it much.
Game Dev Story - duh
NFS Shift - Got it for a buck. Not bad, not thrilling.
Dungeon Scroll - entertaining RPG/scrabble hybrid.
Spirit - DO NOT GET. The Android version is horrible.
Robo Defense* - Another TD game
Guns n Glory* - Yet another TD game, this one with a western feel
Humans vs Aliens - A Plants vs. Zombies clone. Not as good, but fun.
Hot Springs Story - see GDS above. Duh.
Cordy* - A really well done 3D platformer. it uses in-app transactions to open more levels.
Chalk Ball* - Action/puzzle game with interesting graphical approach.
Cyberlords* - Looks like a Shadowrun-type game.
Scrambled Net* - Made by the guy who did the awesome Tricorder App, puzzle game.
EVAC* - Pacman-esque game with a bit of puzzler/escape built in.
Robotek* - A sort of 1-on-1 battling game featuring a slot-machine-based attacking system. Really awesome.

I also have a license for Dungeon Defender, but I uninstalled it in disgust when they went from a paid app to a in-app-billing supported free app. I also have demos of Zenonia, Zenonia 2, and Caligo Chaser, but haven't tried them yet.

In addition, I've got some Emulators, but you're on your own with them, because Google had shown a tendency to pull the shadier ones. They pulled psx4droid because of blatant copyright infringement, and they pulled the yongzh "oid" series of emulators for open-source violations (he was using Open Source code and not giving credit).

FPSE, which is a PSX one, is fairly awesome though. I've been nothing but pleased with it.

Oooh. I didn't know Hexage had a new game out! These guys are great. Radiant and EVAC were pretty awesome and this looks like their best yet.

I also didn't know they yanked the -oid series. I always figured most of them were ripping off the same code, even the non-oid emus had an eerie tendency to look a lot alike. Guess I'll stop recommending them to people. You can still find them on sites like Mobilism if you look hard though.

Cyberlords has a free release with banner ads, so I gave it a shot. It's pretty damn cool, I'm tempted to go ahead and buy it. It feels a lot like the Genesis Shadowrun game, but with point-and-click controls. The graphics are nice, it seems to have a story but doesn't bog down the game with too much dialog (a real killer for cell phone RPGs, IMO), and overall it feels pretty slick. The interface for accessing your items is a little sloppy, but easily something I could put up with.

I bit the bullet and picked it up the other day, and it's quite fun. I haven't even gone past the 2nd level, I've just been having fun grinding my guys, recruiting new people, and trying to get them all to around the same level. My only real drawback is that it can be a bit of a pain to single out your characters if they're all bunched together, but it's still quite a lot of fun.

That was me last night...I've been trying to keep everybody at pretty much the same level if I can (which only gets thrown off by my healer and bard being a few levels higher than everybody else) so other than the upgraded equipment argument, I can also throw in the "oh, one more map and these guys should all be level 9...oooh! what's this new weapon do?" etc.

in Battleheart? You just tap on a character, and drag to where you want them to move/attack/heal/etc. I've only had 2 characters die, and that was because I wasn't paying close enough attention to them, but if you move the healers/casters out of harms way, and keep the fighters from getting overwhelmed, you should be fine.

Battleheart requires my phone to have 2.3 because it's too big for the 30MB limit in 2.2 on the SGS.

In other, happier news, Kairosoft, makers of the awesome Game Dev Story and the unfortunately far less awesome Hot Springs Story have released Grand Prix Story.

Pocket Frogs (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.mobage.ww.a435.pocketfrogs_android) has been ported over from iOS. I only know of it by a friend of astranoir's who is hooked on it and, having tried it for myself, I am having a good bit of fun. It's very simple and casual but it appeals to the Pokémon collector in me. You do have to launch it from within the Mobage app (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.mobage.ww) (which requires its own registration) but it's free and there are no ads in-game.

Cut the Rope gave me more value at $1 than some games do at $50. Great great game. Probably the best mobile game I've ever played on Android.

Also, don't forget to look up Gameloft. They aren't on Android Market, but they make some of the best games for Android and the mobile market. They have sales sometimes for $1 and sometimes give away games too. I have Oregon Trail, Nova, Dungeon Hunter, Hero of Sparta and Assassin's Creed. I only paid $2 for them altogether thanks to freebie giveaways.

The thing about Gameloft and Android...well, not just Gameloft but many games, is that some games won't work on certain devices. I have a Droid X and damn near everything works fine, but a couple Gameloft games had notices on their site that the X was a known device to not work. You just have to make sure beforehand.

That's the big problem with Android. Iphones don't have this issue.

I think they've offered the first Airport Mania for free a few times (it's an Amazon developed game, if it brings in new customers, no loss for them), but when Airport Mania 2 came out, I was very tempted, but figured it'd probably be free eventually, and last week at least for part of the day, it was.

How did I miss this list? Thanks jpub, I'm gonna check these out.

SCUMM-VM was the reason I hacked my PSP originally. I had forgotten about that. If I ever am traveling, I am loading my phone with it.

Does that require a rooted phone?

X you do NOT need a rooted phone for Scumm

So here is what I did last night on my Samsung Tablet.

I got the free version of the XCOM spin off for android, I got Icewind Dale 1 and 2, AND Baldurs Gate and...wait for it...PLANESCAPE TORMENT working on my Android phone all of them with the Gem engine.

Then I got the PS1 emulator and got Alone in the Dark 2 working as well as a dozen other games.

Holy shit!

No Scumm does the older games stuff.

1. I downloaded the android version of UFO, stand alone and doesn't need any emulator.
https://market.android.com/details?id=net.sourceforge.ufoai
Download the extra map files and such from within the config screen on the game.

2. The Gem engine that works for Baldurs gate(with a tiny bit of CFG ini figgling") is in the link below.
https://market.android.com/details?id=net.sourceforge.gemrb&hl=en
They have a help forum as well if you need it to get it running. Some phones have to have a bit more messing around than my Galaxy Tab 10.1.

3. FSPE was what I used for the PS1 games. Also on the market with the bios.

So, my wife wanted a Tablet but I didn't want to spend the hot cash for another Galaxy 10.1 so I took my life into my own hands and got her an Archos 101. Despite the on and off reviews I can say 3 things about it.

1 Got PORTS? Jesus I love it. I am surprised it doesn't have serial somewhere.
2 The screen, so far, feels amazing. I am not sure why but I like it as good or better than my own Galaxy.
3 Getting market on there was hard because I followed old directions, once I got back on track she is up and running. Also came with 1-3 apps that are surprisingly good for on install apps.

Price was right as well....damn.

Now for some gaming!

Other stuff I've picked up, as my installed game library shifts with the tides:

Lord of Magic - it's a sort of action defense game that uses the flick mechanic a lot. I actually find it fairly entertaining.
Pocket League Story - Kairosoft. Soccer.
Cyber Knights RPG - It's by the same crew who did the Star Trader RPG. I think it's fairly lame.
Symphony of Eternity - Old school 16-bit JRPG. It's pretty well done.
Shadow Era - Some sort of card game. never got into it.
Zenonia 1-3 - Got them for a buck each, haven't bothered with them yet.
Illusia - Same as for Zenonia.
Inotia 3 - Some sort of action RPG, haven't tried it much
Pumpkins vs. Monsters - Very cute. Another defense game with some PvZ asthetics, try it.
Medieval Castle Defense - Came free from Samsung.
Angry Vikings - Incredible art style on this, basically you run around and slaughter guys. Stupidly fun.
Majesty - got it free from Samsung, haven't tried it yet.

I should note that Spirit HD (which I warned against above) is actually a quite decent game with an interesting surround-the-enemies with your tail mechanic. The game I MEANT to warn against was Phoenix Spirit. My apologies.

Still installed:

Words Free
Archmage Light
Cyberlords
Robotek HD
3Kingdoms TD
NFS Shift
Dungeon Scroll
Game Dev Story
Grand Prix Story
Emulators, including FPSE
Humans v. Aliens
Cordy
Guns n Glory

I also just installed UFO.

I tried that Diversion auto-run-one-button game, and I don't get the attraction.

Game Dev Story
Grand Prix Story

Kairosoft is still taunting me...They dropped the price of Game Dev for the release of Pocket League Story, and I know as soon as I buy either Grand Prix or Hot Springs, those will drop too (Game Dev was cut almost in half the day after I bought it...). now don't get me wrong, I've gotten MORE than my money's worth even at full price from Game Dev, but if they're going to drop the price on the others, I'm willing to give them a few more days to do it.

I'd give Cyber Knights some time too, I bought that one simply because their devs are super-responsive, and will constantly make changes and are open to feedback. I guess I figured $2 was worth the price of admission to what the game could ultimately become.

Does any sane person install a game that require those permissions? If nothing else it is a sure sign of a incompetent developer, or one with malicious intents.

FINE (GPS) LOCATION
Access fine location sources such as the Global Positioning System on the device, where available. Malicious applications can use this to determine where you are, and may consume additional battery power.
READ CONTACT DATA
Allows an application to read all of the contact (address) data stored on your device. Malicious applications can use this to send your data to other people.
READ PHONE STATE AND IDENTITY
Allows the application to access the phone features of the device. An application with this permission can determine the phone number and serial number of this phone, whether a call is active, the number that call is connected to and the like.
RETRIEVE RUNNING APPLICATIONS
Allows application to retrieve information about currently and recently running tasks. May allow malicious applications to discover private information about other applications.
CHANGE NETWORK CONNECTIVITY
Allows an application to change the state of network connectivity.
CHANGE WI-FI STATE
Allows an application to connect to and disconnect from Wi-Fi access points, and to make changes to configured Wi-Fi networks.
DISCOVER KNOWN ACCOUNTS
Allows an application to get the list of accounts known by the device.

As I posted in the other thread
Many of these are 100% normal, many are not

Why Android requires app information can include the following but are not limited to-

Pause if you get a call
Ask you if you want to ignore particular calls
If it is add supported

But here is a good thread and explains everything including what to watch out for.
http://androidforums.com/android-app...w-android.html

As with everything we all need to decide what is and is not legit. But it obviously isn't as nefarious as it sounds when your either accepting or turning down the applications request for data.

Pause if you get a call: Will happen anyways when the game no longer is the foreground app, so not applicable for games.

Ignore calls: In a game? What?

Ad supported: Why advertisers want a never changing device unique id I can understand, but is that really what we users want? They should use ANDROID_ID which requires no permission. For devices where the ANDROID_ID is broken they could just generate a id and keep it in the app data. I doubt it is critical for them to be able to track a device between factory resets.

Perhaps I'm being just silly and Google should just remove permissions since most people accept everything anyways. :)

Don't know, as I posted in the other thread the game dev data and the white sheet data both said that. So you may need to email the market and ask as they all think this is needed for some apps despite reservations. Or just don't download it.

Sounds like spyware to me. Phones are not immune to it, and it's UN surprising from a freemium, adware and microtransaction funded game.

Wonder if the iOS version is as bad. Glad I don't have it anymore.

Any post about new games are most welcome. Please continue to post if you find stuff. Some of these are gems I would not have discovered without posts in this thread.

Thanks karak :)

Its so sad that many free games are spyware and other malicious stuff.

This is why when I find one good (legit) free game company, i stick to it, and G-Gee is one of them.
I also believe companies and games like this deserve appreciation and recognition too.

That said, I still do play Minecraft, AngryBirds etc...

My understanding is that iPhones don't have spyware problems because apple has a strict screening system, whereas android doesn't have a unified system and has loop holes for non-legit apps to slip through.

I am new to Android and obviously lack in protecting myself from these problems... What is the correct way to understand the market now, and how can I protect myself from this???

I suppose the best way is to just do research on the game. Read comments and ratings, and try to only download from trusted developers.

The thing about the Apple store, though, is that there's a few companies that straight up sell 100% knock-off apps that are direct clones of real games. Apple's store may not be full of spyware, but they seem to not care when knock-offs appear.

Most of the apps I grab are from Amazon's store currently, and honestly..it is usually the FAoTD. Unless I know it right off, I wait until later in the day and check the general reviews. Mass consensus usually sways me.

I usually only grab things from the regular Market after they are pointed out to me on sites like COG. Or again, it is something I know.

The only difference between iPhone and android apps is that android apps show you the permissions, which have been titled as scarily as possible.

Only the ones that can be used for nerfarious purposes have scary descriptions. Apps that require them usually does so because of developer laziness and rarely because of actual need.

Well the titles of the permissions is weird. Sharing on Twitter requires 'Access to Contacts', having it pause when call requires 'Accessing your phone state'. This is true for iphone too. Google can enable conditional or limited approvals(there's an app for that), for extra cautious people.

There is a game called Blood And Glory for Android now, it's a knock off of Infinity Blade, just the sword part.

Except that it's kind of shit. As a good portion of the time when I hit the dodge buttons or the block button, the game reads that as a slash.. which means I take a hit. So it's kind of unresponsive.

It's also freemium and most gear is priced stupidly high. Like $40 real dollars when converted. There is no exploration, just hitting things with a sword.

It's impressive on a technical level and for feeling bad about Android not having Infinity Blade, but it's the Farmville to Infinity Blade's Harvest Moon.

I posted this over in the deals forum, but I figured it may not be seen there, so I'll repost here. Minecraft - Pocket Edition is on sale now for 10 cents, down from $6.99. It's certainly worth a look, I've had the demo for a while and it isn't half bad.

Do you have the control?

No sir. I was doing Dirt 3 with the onscreen controls which was stellar. Sadly, I have the wi-fi version(no usb) of the Galaxy 10.1 so I have to investigate whether that controller works with bluetooth on android, it says it does on PC but then says wireless on tablets. Which makes me nervous it needs a usb wireless adaptor(shown on their webpage).

I am checking more into it right now.

I installed OnLive based on your recommendation. It should be mentioned that you get a copy of LEGO Batman just for installing it. Even if I can't deal with it on the Galaxy Tab, I still got a free game out of it that I can just play on PC!

Yonkers yep. I forgot. I am not so sure how those kind of games will work on my screen with onscreen controls. Dirts are to the far left and right and seem doable and don't restrict the camera by the way the game is setup.

I wonder how Batman fares? Feedback on that. I would like to know.

Ya I did about 5 hours of Dirt last night and, though its not 1080p on my tablet, its by far the highest res game on my tablet I have played and I am showing the peeps at work my replays and its amazing to see the look on their faces as I am playing it on our shitty wireless here at work:)

Hope it works for ya. Hey its free so testing it is a no lose situation I guess.

Just an FYI, Game Dev Story is only 10 cents on the Android Market (https://market.android.com/details?id=net.kairosoft.android.gamedev3en) today. It's worth the ~$3 that it normally goes for, but it's a no-brainer at $0.10.

Welcome to the joys of EA mobile games. They're infamous for that on iOS, almost every game they have on the App Store is rated around 3 stars because at some point they've released an update that broke everything.

I've been lucky enough to miss the bad updates for the EA games I've bought, but it's a pretty regular occurrence.

Which is kind of what I suspected. The screenshots on the store looked great on my phone, but it didn't look like something that would control all that well. I wish they'd just do a port of Dead Space Extraction.

Kairosoft is on a bit of a roll lately. First Epic Astro Story (https://market.android.com/details?id=net.kairosoft.android.frontier_en&feature=more_from_developer), and today I see they've released Mega Mall Story (https://market.android.com/details?id=net.kairosoft.android.depart_en)...

I've only picked up Epic Astro Story so far, but I've heard good things about Mega Mall as well. Now they just need to have a freaking sale again!
