Hey,
Curious on peoples personal opinions and choices.
I'm currently looking at the Bose Companion 3 series for PC speakers. They sound pretty good, from what I've heard at demo's with them, better than the cheap pair of speakers I have currently, but for the price I'm curious if anyone has any personal experience with them, or other choices or options? 200 is about my limit but ideally I'd like some quality equipment.

Bose are always too expensive for what they offer to be honest. Try around and see what you like at local shops.
I have Logitech 2.1's because I need the space. 50 bucks for 2 and a sub and they actually sound AMAZING.

I trust Patrick Norton in these matters. Having big papa Garnett Lee is a bonus.

I too have a Logitec 2.1 set-up. They work well for my gaming and small space media needs. As you start thinking expensive, I really suggest getting a solid home theater components, and use a sound card supporting optical audio out. You will have a more valuable set-up for the money spent. If this is a more personal choice, say for a bedroom or office, there are also some fine headphone options(think there is a thread about that somewhere).
One cool thing about dropping money on good speakers or headphones is that they can last a lot longer than your computer. Good speaker systems can last decades.

The Logitech and Boston 2.1 setups are both great. Great size, and really great if you have a space premium.

Thanks for the advice.
Looking around I'm leaning more towards the Logitech Z-2300's. I was looking at Klipsch Promedia 2.1's too, but so far I think the logitech is winning out. I need to just go to the store and listen to them though.

I have a logitech 5.1 system running as a 2.1. (well, 3.1? I just don't have the rear speakers)
I played Dead Space with this setup and it worked great. I found that if I turned on 5.1 output in dead space, the Logitech speaks would handle the forward and rear sounds differently so it sounded as if I had rear speakers, really cool.

I think it very much depends on what you want to do with the speakers. If you're looking for speakers for a good gaming experience, I think that you have to go for the surround, (once I started playing with a moderately good 5.1 setup, I found myself being more easily immersed into the environment). However, if you're thinking more for an office type situation, watching movies, or using a laptop, a 2.1 speaker set should be sufficient.

Well, I actually went out and bought the Logitech Z-2300's. It's a 2.1 system, and damn it sounds great. It's just so clear and crisp. I'm quite pleased. They were a bit pricey, but considering, it's actually quite a solid set of speakers, and this sub is huge.

I used to have the Logitech Pulse-420s, old 2.1 set they don't make anymore, cost me $40 and could pump out enough sound and bass to flatten a house.

I spent $40 on a set of Logitech X-230s last year and love them. They're the best speakers you can get for the price. Not amazing quality, but not bad with good, loud bass.
The X-240 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16836121010) came out recently for the same price and includes an iPod dock.

I'll also endorse surround sound for being optimal. In the past I've spent good money on some klipsch speakers and they do sound damn good. No matter what you do though, I don't recommend 5.1 for gaming. Most games don't know what to do with the center channel and it ends up being wasted.
I've had the Z2300s for about 5 years now and they have been absolutely amazing.

I've been using a set of Klipsch 4.1 speakers (ProMedia v2-400 w/ control pod upgrade) for 8 years, and I don't plan on replacing them any time soon. My only complaint for games is that sometimes the dialog seems too quiet and I wonder if it's supposed to be playing over the center channel. Probably just bad sound code in those games though.
