You're right to be excited. This looks like a god damn gaming jambalaya. I hope they have proper funding already. I wonder what they're planning to do about funding if they don't... I can definitely see them raking in a few hundred thousand dollars with a well executed kickstarter campaign.

Ravenlock

I'm excited by a lot of stuff in that video (the 3D tilesets, procedural generation and the physics engine all look really cool), but I'm not sure I fully understand how it comes together as a game, yet.

That first shot of the aliens rushing the base while the guy stood by the two spotlights didn't actually look all that good or fun. The spotlights weren't actually being useful at highlighting the incoming enemies, and then they fell into the "moat" (which didn't appear to be successfully deterring other enemies from reaching the base) and shot / clawed each other. Cool looking, I guess, but it sure didn't make me think "I wish I was playing that." And getting whacked by a giant spinning thing that clearly exists only to demonstrate getting whacked is cool, but not actually fun.

But there are lots of good ideas in there, for sure. They've got my attention.

Unfortunately, it's a paid beta like Minecraft and Kerbal Space Program. $15 gets you early access and a copy of the game when it releases. I'm still weighing whether to buy in. I love the concept and enjoyed the one game I got to play at PAX East.

The mode here is called "Elite Mode". This is a video explaining it and giving you a feel for it: PgYzdqLGWS8

And here is a video showing some amazing matches: 6Y5bnhLNeKk

Now, this MIGHT not really be considered Indie, as I think Ubisoft MIGHT be publishing, but I'm not too sure the rules on that. Then again, a game this fun looking probably deserves its own thread, but I am lazy. Anyway, here's hoping for beta soon!

Bought and played Home.

At the end of my story, Rachel and Normal had an affair however Rachel was a figment of my imagination. The Man in the house had killed his wife, but I had maybe killed all those other women.

All in all, a rather confusing end because I didn't find Rachel in the dirty rags in the basement. I also missed some things as well along the way. I had sort of guess the story about half-way through, and the letter I found cinched it.

I need to play again, but go more carefully, and pick and choose the answers. Still, an interesting game.

Going back to Starbound (Woot), some folks found one of the music composer's soundcloud site. In a nice twist, the devs are encouraging people to give it a listen (http://playstarbound.com/music-in-starbound/), as long as you keep in mind that this is not finished material.

It sounds pretty damn sweet. (http://soundcloud.com/curtis-schweitzer/sets/starbound/)

Unfortunately, the forum hints that the game is being delayed until around Holidays. Sad face. (http://community.playstarbound.com/index.php?threads/starbound-release-time-and-news-update.7481/)

Drox Operative (http://www.soldak.com/Drox-Operative/Overview.html)

From the maker of Din's Curse and Depths of Peril (both awesome, by the way) comes one-man-band Soldak Entertainment's next game. The game is still in beta, but pre-ordering the release gets you access to the current beta build. I've spent some time playing and have to say I'm impressed. It's not perfect, but as someone who followed Din's Curse in a similar manner, I can tell you that patches come frequently and often tweak or add major game features. The dev is passionate about game making, and listens to and interacts with his audience.

But you don't have to take my word for it... [/LeVar Burton]

Did anyone else contribute to the FTL Kickstarter and, as a result, get the beta over the weekend?

A8rzjQIKpus

I've been hooked on this game over the past few days. Combat is more challenging than I expected. Although the primary strategy is pretty repetitive (Focus on the enemy's shields and weapons) they throw enough curve balls at you to keep you on your toes.

Ravenlock
09-05-2012, 03:20 PM
Yup, I got in over the weekend too, and absolutely love it.

I got wrecked my first few runs through, but in my most recent game I've made it to the 4th "Exit" point without losing any crew.

If you get a chance to pick up an Ion Bomb, which teleports to any enemy subsystem and immediately (temporarily) disables it, get it. Battles become exponentially easier when your opening gambit can always be "now you have no weapons system." ;)

It's a brilliant system for emergent storytelling. Reminds me of Strange Adventures in Infinite Space, in the best ways.

Ink Asylum
09-05-2012, 03:27 PM
I've played probably around 2 dozen games so far. I also got wrecked early on, and even now if I run into an unlucky encounter in the first system I can take such a hit to my crew/hull that I'm better off restarting.

With practice, though, I've now gotten to the final sector twice. The first time I was curb-stomped by the final boss, the second time I fared much better, although they threw a twist at me which I wasn't prepared for, and I couldn't overcome it. If I can get the right weapons next time I know I can beat it.

Some advice, for the default ship, at least:

Shields - I tried to skirt by on 4 shields for a while, but 6 is definitely the key to survivability.
Engines - Boosting engines is massively effective against all projectiles. By the end of my last game I was dodging more than half of all incoming fire.
Doors - At least get the first upgrade to Blast Doors. It makes fighting invaders much easier. If possible, I now just open all the airlocks between them and the vacuum of space, so they suffocate before getting too deep into the ship.
Weapons - While auto-firing weapons is easier, I've gotten better at timing them manually so I can bring down the shields with one weapon then do heavy damage immediately with another.
Crew - Remember that your crew get better at their assigned stations. Remember where they usually work or check on the ship tab to see where they have experience. Also, if you have to fight invaders, try to do it in your med bay, where they'll be healed while they fight.

It's tough deciding how to spend your scrap. You simply don't have enough to buy everything. I think I'm going to focus on getting my shields up first next time. I figure if I can avoid taking a lot of hull damage that will save me scrap I can instead spend on upgrades and weapons.

Man, I don't know if anyone else has made it to the last sector in FTL yet, but it is BRUTAL. I definitely suffered this time from having a bad run through the rest of the game. My ship just wasn't prepared for the final battle. I didn't have the right weapons to get past all of the boss's defenses. I definitely need either the ion cannon or one of those bomb teleporters. Regular missiles just didn't cut it.

Perhaps I should start a new thread with this question... but... the term roguelike. I always wondered wtf that meant, and I looked it up on good ole Wiki and it states :
"The roguelike is a sub-genre of role-playing video games, characterized by level randomization, permanent death, and turn-based movement."

A) Isn't that REAAAALLY broad? And
B) Doesn't that basically describe X-Com?

Ink Asylum
09-17-2012, 04:49 PM
There's more to it than that. Roguelikes tend to involve a single character that you use to explore an uncharted area in a largely linear fashion.

X-Com has mission goals, a home base, replaceable characters, and other factors that set it apart from roguelikes.

I guess that's part of my confusion. I've heard FTL often referred to as a Rogue-like (that's the game that got me wondering btw), yet, FTL has mission goals, a home base (the ship), and replaceable characters...

In FTL the ship is your character, not the little guys running around inside it. Those are just equipment. :)

FTL has one end goal, which some rogue-likes have as well at the bottom of their dungeon. The dungeon for FTL is the stretch of space between sectors 1 and 7. Each sector is like the floor of a traditional roguelike dungeon, where you can roam around to fight enemies and recover equipment before eventually moving deeper to face tougher foes.

"Roguelike" is being used lately to depict games that use certian elements. Usually: Permanent death, Randomized Areas, Randomized Loot, and some form of level progression. It's broad on purpose. Even the FTL guys call it a rogue-like-like. Few steps away.

Eventually someone is going to come up with a better term for it, like they did for doom clones and Dota-likes.

I'm all for Lekongames. myself. It's catchy.

Stone Soup will always be the king of roguelikes for me. It's completely free too!

It really is a broad term, but it was always meant to refer to games like Stone Soup, ADOM and Nethack. Those games don't need a new term to describe them...it's all these impostors like FTL that need to get their own identity! :)

There should be a demo for Cardinal Quest. Oddly enough, I know for sure there's one for CQ2, and they play a ton alike, so you can give that one a go.

Ones I can recommend:

Telepath: (Decent tactical RPG)
Project Black Sun: Nifty Metroidvania
Star Prospector: RTS-ish game. Somewhere between an RTS and an action rpg.
Zombie Football Carnage: Surprisingly fun and mindless combat game.
Devil Whiskey: If you were a big fan of Bards Tale, this is basically a new one of those.

All the others, I haven't played myself, so I don't want to comment on them.

That's an ambitious idea. It sounds a lot like Dwarf Fortress's adventure mode.

Ravenlock
09-27-2012, 09:31 AM
It does sound ambitious, but it also sounds very vague and is, frankly, written pretty horribly. It's entirely likely that the project lead doesn't have English as his first language, and if so that shouldn't be held against him, but reading through the pitch was kind of painful.

I also see a lot of high concept ideas without any specifics or evidence that he can pull them off. I mean, it's a 20-year-old who's never put out a game before. Every member of the team except him is a student, which I assume means they're doing this in their spare time.

A dynamic, believable, AI controlled world isn't a simple problem to solve. Certainly a top-down 2D approach makes it a little easier, but still, this is the sort of stuff other experienced developers spend years refining over multiple games. I'd love to see them pull it off right out of the gate, but I think I'll wait and see. If they do it, they'll have me as a customer, for sure.

Ink Asylum

Have you tried Pineapple Smash Crew (http://store.steampowered.com/app/204390/)? Not a roguelike in the strictest sense (too action focused and not enough variety), but a lot of randomness, good squad mechanics, and a nice tight addiction loop.

Not really? I mean, in terms of raw gameplay interaction, yes, it's an action game, but the focus is much more on team management, item management and tactics than just moving and aiming your gun.

Cannon Fodder would be the closest parallel I could draw, probably, in terms of how it controls and plays.

Updates!

I was sent a press demo of Sword of the Stars: The Pit (http://www.indiegogo.com/sots-thepit). Said demo had about 1/5th the levels in, and was an alpha, but despite that, rather fun. Good solid roguelike, ton of skills to mess with, and pretty easy to get the hang of.

As it stands, certainly worth a donation. Also, the guys from Kerberos have agreed to some q&a with CoG. If anyone's got some questions for the Pit Crew, let me know, and I'll pass them along.

Update 2:

Had a chance to play Bonfire (http://moacube.com/games/bonfire/)as well. I'm damn impressed. Alpha state still, but no crashes or errors. The game's a coffeebreak tactics game (Most games over in 30 minutes or an hour *max*, think desktop dungeons) Turn based, an emphasis on tactics and improv, instead of healtankspank. I'll have a full write up of it soon. Until then, you can get some more details over at the interview I did with Bonfire's creator. (http://www.colonyofgamers.com/cogforums/showthread.php?t=27731)

Well shucks howdy, madam! We did a Google Hangout once. ONCE.

I am unbelievably stoked by how much publicity Legend of Dungeon is getting and how great the Kickstarter is doing. I wish you and Calvin much more good luck!

Bleep, I remember the possible two or so people you might be! Ahoy, and thank you for spreading word of the game!

MagGnome, I am glad you approve!

I've got one that I've been hotly anticipating that just went to pre order status:

www.malevolencegame.com

Malevolence: The Sword of Ahkranox is an infinite, non-random, procedurally generated first person RPG.

I think it's a fantastic project, and I couldn't drop my twenty bucks fast enough.

Well, there are some squad based RLs. Steam Marines is one that's semi sci fi (Guns, steamtech in space). I linked to it a bit earlier in the thread. Also, there's an actual Xcom RL, basically Xcom original redone in ascii.

Just finished playing some of the latest build of this game and it is pretty entertaining, though I got a little lost and couldn't figure out how to activate the elevator :(

Also, those are mines on the ground. Do not try and step on one...

Monaco. A 1-4 player arcade game about heists. (http://www.pocketwatchgames.com/Monaco/)

i7DdPx_nvuA

It feels like it's been in development forever. I've personally played it at two consecutive PAX Easts (spoiler: It's awesome). Well, it's finally nearing release, close enough that they're opening up pre-orders. (http://www.pocketwatchgames.com/Monaco/)

It'll be $15 at release. Pre-ordering will get you the game for $13.50. Pre-ordering a 4-pack costs $45 ($11.25 a copy).

I need three of the usual suspects to break open the vault and get the loot. Who wants in?

1. Ink Asylum
2. Ravenlock
3. Spigot
4. Lekon

Gee, it's not like it's a bunch of the people who do indie covera...

Yeah that joke's too easy. You guys are going to love the game though. Singleplayer is fine, actually decent.

Thing is: 2 players? You can clear a stage easily. 3 players? Little chaotic.

4 people is a clusterfuck that turns into the credits of the Benny Hill show. It's awesome.

Ink Asylum
12-14-2012, 10:52 AM
I've played 4-player at PAX a couple times, and it's indeed chaos, but the fun kind. All pretense of stealth goes out the window and it's everyone scrambling for loot while dodging overworked guards.

Playing the prototype alone last night is a completely different game. It's almost a stealth-puzzler at that point.

Just tried this and it's good enough to have to pay for it, but you don't.
I highly recommend it for anyone who loves that so-good-but-it-wants-me-dead style of gameplay. If only all retro "love letter" games were done this well.

With the IGF Finalists (http://igf.com/2013/01/2013_independent_games_festiva_2.html) announced, there are a ton of good games to check out. The nominations were pretty well spread out, aside from a few I won't mention.

One that caught me by surprise is 7 Grand Steps (http://p4.hostingprod.com/@mousechief.com/arcadamia/Site/by_Mousechief.html). Feels like you're playing an animatronic board game. Only a demo for now, but I'll probably be buying this when it hits. Just too fascinating to avoid.

A link from Pixel Prospector, the Indie Games Megalist (http://pinterest.com/pixelprospector/indie-games-the-mega-list/), 280 or so games. A ton of good games to look through and possibly play.

Unclaimed Planet. (http://unclaimedworld-game.com/)

“Unclaimed World” is a single player game for the PC which combines the citybuilding and the sim genres, taking cues from games like Dwarf Fortress and The Settlers. You direct a small group of pioneers who are creating a settlement on a lush planet with a harsh and challenging environment.

It's a good short romp, if fairly tedious at points, but I wouldn't pay $10 (or even $9) for it. Wait for it to go on a big sale. It takes maybe 3 hours to finish.

I'm pretty close to the end, I think, but have thoroughly enjoyed it.

It does get a little grindy and slower paced near the end, but if you think about it, it perfectly encapsulates the late 90s JRPG game design philosophy :)

Heck, it even has a section that is a Diablo knock-off!

I thought it was easily worth the $9 I spent on it. And I've sunken at least 5 hours into it (though I think I got lost in one of the forests). But yeah, if I look at it a little more objectively, you're probably right about the cost, but I think that $9 is fair if you want the romp down memory lane.

I'll be doing a review/preview of this in a bit, but wanted to do a quick note for "Bonfire (http://moacube.com/news/bonfire-is-out/)" by Moacube. This game has a demo, and is goddamn HARD.

But not unfair. I've heard it said to be "Desktop Dungeons meets Dragon's Dogma." Highly recommended.

Demo's free, full version (Early adopters get it cheaper) is $7.95 (http://moacube.com/news/bonfire-is-out/)

Played the demo. I had a good enough time, but I don't think I'd actually enjoy playing too much more of it. For some reason, figuring out that particular type of "puzzle battle" doesn't yield me enough satisfaction to carry me through a whole game.

Thanks for pointing us to it, though. Neat idea.

The game gets seriously puzzle filled later on, especially once you get characters like the crazy cat witch and the disenchanter.

Not sure where to ask so I will here.

Anyone know anything about stardrive (http://store.steampowered.com/app/220660/?snr=1_7_15__13)?

It looks sorta neat, and I kinda want to play a strategy game (I guess I could play CIV5) but don't really want to buy it sight unseen and there seems to be no reviews on it. Some user reviews but and they all say the same thing really, that the game could of used some more time due to bugs. I was curious about how and what sort of bugs though.
