A French research group has put together a demo for a new method of delivering glasses-free 3D (http://venturebeat.com/2011/04/11/ipad-2-3d/) without the need for a special screen, using headtracking through the front-facing camera on current gen iOS devices.

A rather convincing effect, even displayed on video like that. It actually reminds me of some of the early demo footage for the 3DS.

I'm sure someone will be along now though to tell us all how it isn't "real 3D" because of <insert made up arbitrary definition here>.

That's pretty damn cool.

...the lack of depth perception if you don't move your head/device. :p

We saw almost exactly the same demo for the Wii not long after it came out. We've all been demanding headtracking ever since. Companies apparently don't give a shit.

Clever. I wonder if a similar method could be used to control the view in a first-person game (amplifying the head movements, of course). An FPS would probably be too much to ask, but an app like Epic Citadel would be a great place to demo it...
