We've pretty much known this for a month - ever since Dan Aykroid spilled the beans on a radio show (http://www.colonyofgamers.com/cogforums/showthread.php?t=1201) - but this morning Atari made it official: they will be publishing Terminal Reality's Ghostbusters: The Video Game.
The game is written by the original writers of the movies - Dan Aykroid and Harold Ramis - and will include the voices and likeness of most of the original cast, including Ramis, Aykroid, Bill Murray, Ernie Hudson, William Atherton and Annie Potts (what, Rick Moranis was too busy?). The game will co-incide with the 25th anniversary of the orginal movie, and is set to be the keystone of a mass market property revival, inclduing a re-release of the movies on Blu-Ray.
Ghostbusters: The Video Game is set for release sometime in 2009 on the Xbox 360, Playstation 3, Playstation 2, PC, Wii and DS.

Do we know what type of game this will be? Regardless, as long as the game is decent this is really exciting :).

Do not be surprised if/when Atari surpasses EA or Activision as a top publisher in the world. Ghostbusters is cool, but their work in getting an advanced hold in Eastern European development is what will do it.
Are they publishing Heavy Rain as well, or is that Sony?

They cut out the middle man and just threw them all into a landfill outright.

This makes me happy. Now if only there was a way to ensure the game is good...

Atari is making some good steps these days, picking up this and the Riddick remake/new game. Who knows, maybe by some wierd twist of fate Atari will become like the antithesis to ActiBlizz/old EA.

(what, Rick Moranis was too busy?).
Per an earlier discussion we had about this, Rick no longer acts, period. He made so much money off Honey I Shrunk the Kids, he retired.
Now, that said, you may be interested to know he's credited as a writer for the Ghostbusters game here on IMDB. Odd that.

If the game is to coincide with the movies 25th anniversary, would the release date really be "sometime in 2009?" June 8th 2009, baby!!!
Or is that sort of a safeguard in case of unforeseen delays...?

I think the whole year is slated to be a celebration of the movie. As I said they're rolling out the works: toys, beach towels, lunchboxes. I'm pretty sure you''ll see Slimer brand cologne before 2009 is done.

Faith. Just have faith. As we do with any game we hope is going to be good :p Besides, if it's out in June, it's a good time since that is the slow time of the gamer calender.

I'm there for the Slimer cologne...and metal lunch boxes...it will match my FO 3 one...

I imagine you're being sarcastic, but just to clarify Moranis gave up acting after his wife died of cancer and he became a single dad. He said he didn't have time to raise his kids and act. Hell of a stand up guy.

Actually he gave up acting a while after she passed on, due to raising the kids yes. But he still did act for some time.
The lack of quotes in this thread is disturbing.

My mistake then, but given how many big movies he was in during the 80's-90's I could see him being set financially. Now I want to watch My Blue Heaven.

I thought it was something like his wife died and he felt he had more than enough money but wasn't able to spend enough time with the kids traveling to act and such.

While it's really great news that Ghostbusters has been picked up, I think I'll ask the question everyone else is simply too afraid to ask: what about the 50 cent franchise?

Blood on the Sand needs to be released, as it is by far the most potentially funny game that has been announced in years.

While I will probably buy and enjoy Ghostbusters, I need news on Brutal Legend.

That one was one of the first homeless games to get picked up. I don't remember who picked it up, I only remember the righteous indignation I felt when reading about it while Ghostbusters and Brutal Legend were still left on the streets.

This wasn't exploitable enough for Activision? Damn, times like these I want the :eyeroll: emote icon back. ;)
Maybe Atari will pick up Brutal Legend too.

Just hope Atari doesn't screw this up. Their track record is less than stellar, and with this game having a release day that it more or less has to meet (ie summer/fall 2009) I see big potential for this to be rushed and sloppy.

So Brutal legend got left to rot and they raced for 50 cent?
That makes about as much sense as this:

50 Cent game picked up while Brutal Legend lays lonely! Cats and dogs, living together; mass hysteria!
Pretend for a moment that I don't know anything about metallurgy, engineering, or physics, and just tell me what the hell is going on!

Keep in mind that the first 50 Cent sold VERY well, while Psychonauts was kind of a flop.
I'm as disappointed as you guys are, but there's a reason that 50 Cent was picked up so quickly.

That'd be impressive if Atari screws it up. The game was originally supposed to be out within the next month or so and it was sounding like they were going to meet that target.

AB is smoking crack. It's like throwing away money for the sake of making sequels.
