Wahls is speaking at a public forum on Iowa's House Joint Resolution 6, the "defense of marriage" act which passed from the House on the first of February, 62-37, carried by Republicans. In three hours of debate on the House floor, only two Republicans spoke in favor of the bill, which replaced a similar law that was overturned by the State Supreme Court. The three justices who voted to allow same-sex marriages have been since unseated, after a vigorous campaign by family value groups and especially by Christian ministers -- the religious right rumbles awake once more (http://www.nytimes.com/2011/04/03/us/politics/03pastor.html).

I personally consider laws like this one no less than a codifying of discrimination against a minority, as reprehensible as the laws of segregation that King fought against in the Civil Rights Movement. But looking past all that -- I can hardly imagine being told that my parents, whom I love and depend on, are illegitimate, sinful, and incapable of safely raising a child. How lucky am I, to be born in the majority.
