Seen over at 1up (http://www.1up.com/news/devil-survivor-returns-ds), the latest issue of Famitsu has Atlus announcing Devil Survivor 2 for the DS. Yes, that's DS, not 3DS, despite a port of the original Devil Survivor coming out soon for the new handheld in both the US and Japan.
It is slated for a summer 2011 release, and considering Atlus's support record, I would expect to see it in the US late in the fall.

Siliconera (http://www.siliconera.com/2011/03/22/devil-survivor-2-coming-to-nintendo-ds-with-all-new-characters/) has a scan of the announcement.

I would pose the question of whether I should buy it when it comes out on the DS or wait for the inevitable upgraded version on the 3DS, but who am I kidding? We all know I'll be buying both. :p

This was the first thing I thought. I'll wait for the 3ds version. I can't keep buying multiple copies of the same game with slightly different things in them. Yeah, I'm looking at you Persona 3 and Final Fantasy 4!

You know if they update the graphics and put either of those out on the PS3 or Xbox you'd be all over it.
Or maybe it's just me...

Actually I would need a little more than just graphics being updated. It'd take some new content like more Persona or extra dungeons to really get me to go for it.
I'll probably buy that FF4 Complete though, seeing as how I never played The After Years. But only if it's on the PSN and on sale.
I'm trying to be less of a consumer whore this year. It's getting harder to not buy lots of things though...

See, there's people Abyssion, who will wait for a 3DS ver.
Then there's people like frederec and me, who will end up getting both just because we're total shills for all things SMT.

I'm shill enough to buy the 3ds version of the first one even though I'm not getting a 3ds till a redesign lol. I'm just not made of money (I own three copies of P3 and FF4) so I can't keep doing it with every damn game they do.
Edit: I know FF4 isn't Atlus, I'm just mentioning it since it's been re-released a number of times and I have a stupid dedication to double and triple dipping.

I was going to say that I'm a total shill too, but my collection isn't quite as extensive as frederec's and probably not yours either. I'll have to settle for wannabe shill, I guess.

I'm seriously considering buying the 3DS version too, even though it'll probably be a long time before I buy a 3DS. I've actually been thinking about it since I first heard about the game.
I also have all three versions of P3 and am considering buying the FFIV collection for the same reason as you: I haven't played the After Story, plus they're adding some new content to bridge the two parts. We could form a support group, but we would probably just end up encouraging each other to buy more stuff.

But I wouldn't mind so much a support group that tells me everything will be okay, and support my poor choices. It'd make me feel all warm and fuzzy.

Please don't think of it as a competition. I...have a bit of a problem with collecting things. Sometimes it bothers me that I don't have pristine boxes for the GBC/GBA MegaTen games, and my import collection is limited to things that have translation hacks (or have them nearly finished).
But seriously, I'm mostly happy that there are other people around that enjoy these games about as much as I do, or even more. I don't run into many other people who have ever heard of MegaTen around here, much less are into it.

I'm getting the new FFIV (shit...does that make the fifth time I'll have bought it?) mainly for The After Years, or whatever its called. I haven't played that before, and I'd like to try it.
But I wouldn't mind so much a support group that tells me everything will be okay, and support my poor choices. It'd make me feel all warm and fuzzy.
My wife actually does this, and it's somewhat bad. She's maybe a little too encouraging of my game collecting habits. Sometimes when I'm about to resist, she asks me why I'm not actually buying whatever, and it pushes me over. Not that I mind. I've known people in relationships where they have to beg and plead for everything they buy, and it looks miserable.

I can only hope I meet a woman like your wife, or at least one that'll be enouraging yet limiting on how much I spend. Granted I can only hope to find a career that can let me be comfortable with spending.
I'm glad other people here enjoy the Atlus games as well. It all started for me with Digital Devil Saga, and the fact I almost bought a new copy off eBay for 100 bucks. Fortunately I ended up getting a copy at Toys R Us for 10. I do kinda regret not getting the other 5 copies and eBaying them myself, but part of me figured I shouldn't be greedy and let other people discover this gem of a game... Stupid morals...

Oh, frederec has me beat cold. I don't have nearly the number of imports he has, and I gave my copy of P3 (non-FES) away.
He also tends to beat the games more than I do.
But I'll definitely buy Survivor 2, and I'm buying Survivor 1 for the 3DS, and I'll probably buy anything else that has the words Shin Megami Tensei attached to it.
And I may actually pick up that FF4, but probably PSN ver only.

Awww...you're too sweet. Honestly, though, my track record on finishing games only looks good if you look at PS2 releases, and even that's not perfect (I got close to the end of Devil Summoner 2, but my PS3 died before I finished it). I've started so many more than I've finished. Though I did jump back into my save on Persona 1 on PSP hoping to finally finish with the good ending.

She is pretty awesome. I don't know what I'd do without her. And I'm also incredible grateful I can not only support us both on one salary, but have enough money that I can support my gaming habit without breaking the bank.

I probably would have done the exact same thing, with the exact same logic (and kicking myself afterward).

Back on topic, Siliconera (http://www.siliconera.com/2011/03/23/devil-survivor-2-has-many-more-main-characters-than-the-last-game/) has some additional coverage on the characters in Devil Survivor 2. In the Siliconera article there is also a link to the famitsu story (http://www.famitsu.com/news/201103/24041611.html) which has some screenshots.

Another update from siliconera (http://www.siliconera.com/2011/05/12/see-devil-survivor-2s-thirteen-devil-messengers/). This one focuses on the art for the characters in the game.
And is it just me, or are the girls in this game (and the first) a bit more...busty than your average Atlus fare? Seeing all the character portraits at once, it really...jumped out at me.

So I was going to make an amusing response with my text surrounded but pictures of the women from the game. But my image hosting service just went down. The board tags work in inane ways. And imageshack told me to fuck off so...yes. They seem bustier. Ridiculously so.

I'd disagree, it's just that the human body morphology in the art direction in this one is a little weird. It's like they stretch the body vertically, but leave the breasts too low so they look oddly large.
And I can't believe I'm analyzing this shit.

I can see that. But it also looks like all the girls got boob jobs at the exact same plastic surgeon. Not that this will keep me from playing the game, mind you.

According to Siliconera (http://www.siliconera.com/2011/06/07/shin-megami-tensei-devil-survivor-2-keeps-nintendo-ds-alive-in-north-america/), Japan is getting Devil Survivor 2 in July, and we're getting it in North America next year. I don't see official announcements or specific dates, but I expect those will be forthcoming.
edit: just a moment ago, I received the Atlus Faithful announcement for Devil Survivor 2. It just says 2012 for a release date, but I expect it will be early in the year (to fit with the usual six month gap between Japanese and US releases). There is also a website (http://www.atlus.com/devilsurvivor2/), which is filled with turning cogs.
The main new tidbit of information is hints that there is some social link style relationship builder with your party members.
