I've had Microsoft's new and ambitious dashboard in my hands now for almost a week, and I gotta say - there's no looking back. From the streamlined interface, to the slick graphics, to the myriad of new features; it's a good day to be an Xbox 360 owner.
By now you've read everything there is about the NXE, so I created a top 10 list of the little things you may or may not know about it. Included is a video of a quick tour of the dashboard, including the events channel where you can find community events, contests, etc. Of course the best thing about it? Co-Op Game night Presented by Co-Optimus!

This is why the 360 is king. Constant improvements and additions. Love it.

How bad does it sound to say I can't wait for this...yeah, really bad...i'll go in the corner now and be forced to play Superman 64....

Nice work on the video. It's pretty exciting and I personally can't wait for the update and the new Avatars. They're certainly a lot more flexible then Mii's...

Has anyone tried out the full game install / uninstall process? Is it a pretty painless affair?
Anyone got an idea how it works for multi-disc games? (I'm guessing Lost Odyssey won't fit on my 20GB drive.)

From what I have read, you have the option of installing one, all, and any combination of the disks. And I believe, if you install all of them, you only need the original disk to play the game (don't quote me one this last part though).

maybe he was zooming around too fast as he was used to the interface, but i was completely lost the whole time.
as long as the toHD install thing works i'll tolerate the fluff.

Nice vid, bap :D
Looking forward to all the new features, especially the inclusion of 1680 x 1050 support.

Haha, I like the new Gears of War theme on Co-Optimus. The Robot looks very badass.

Put the game in, hit Y for disc options and choose to install it. The longest install I've seen has been about 10 minutes, a 6.7 GB or so install of Oblivion.
I think, though I never thought to test it until this point, that multi-disc games require you to switch game discs.

Also, from what I've heard the game installs don't improve load times all that much.
Installs do cut down on the sound of the hardware, but overall I feel like the feature is worthless.

Tycho on PA was talking about how loading times aren't greatly improved by the installs, but the workload on your optical drive - and the amount of noise coming from the 'box - is lessened noticeably.
That's enough for me to be a fan, since everytime I play a game like Fallout 3 I feel like I'm counting down to another RRoD. :(

From what I understand, it depends on the game. Ninja Gaiden II post install has almost no load times according to reports.

The whole point is to cut out noise and lessen hardware strain. There are some definite time improvements in the loading times of some games. I've even heard nine seconds or so.

Just conversations in other forums. I also hear that the loading scenes when changing chapters in Dead Space are reduced to be really short. Like 5-seconds short.
Yet some games take LONGER to load off of the hard drive, like Dead Rising due to how Dead Rising already caches things to the disc.
Overall, the OPTION to install games to the drive is very nice indeed.
Edit: You'll be able to try it for yourself in around 2 weeks... sooner if you don't mind being disconnected from Live.

Dead Rising was longer for one load, faster for all the others - if we watched the same video. I wonder if it was already cached on the DVD version, versus caching on the HDD one, which would make it a bit of an inappropriate comparison.

I'm listening to some people on another board talk about it, but would love to see a video too.

That's enough for me to be a fan, since everytime I play a game like Fallout 3 I feel like I'm counting down to another RRoD. :(If load times go down a little, that's fine. I'm mostly interested in not having the disc spinning 100% of the time I'm playing a game. If I can install the game and the disc only has to spin for that brief validation check when I start up the game, I'll be happy.
The leaf-blower DVD drive in the 360 really annoys me.

It was on Gametrailers, but I'm afraid I don't have a link.

I understand what you're saying. And, despite my previous complaints, I'm planning to install Rock Band 2 to the HDD. It'll be nice to reduce system noise and lessen hardware strain for my most-played 360 game.

Hmmm. I really want a 360, but that whole RRoD fiasco sort of turned me off for a while. This could be a stupid question, but would it be worthwhile to pick up a 360 nowadays? I almost feel like I am the point where I would rather just wait until next gen, since it seems like it's already getting close :/...

I'd probably put at us in the middle, mature region of the console's lifecycle. Traditionally, consoles exist for 4-7 years. The 360 has a LOT of EXCELLENT content for it already, and a lot more coming.
We've already seen revisions to the hardware, and price drops. Now is a great time to buy ANY of the consoles.
If you are prepared to wait until the next generation arrives, you'll be waiting for a while.

1. The update actually comes in two pieces. The first installs like a traditional update, taking only seconds. Then upon system reboot the update downloads and installs from the NXE servers. Our install and download took around 5 minutes.
This is the best part...especially after going through yet another update for my PS3 last night...which did nothing much, yet still took more than 30 minutes to download and install :(

For serious! And WHAT did it do for me other than get in my way? Let me tell you, I have a FAST fiber-optic connection, and every PS3 update is slow. I buffer movies on NetFlix in less than a min... but the PS3 can't get its crappy update in 30 min?

If the game is using the HD for caching anyway, you aren't going to see an improvement.
It took about 10 minutes to install Fallout 3 for me, the only game I tried. Didn't see much improvement, which is probably because, it caches like a mofo.

I'm really starting to look forward to this update. I hope that the silly spinning ring is a thing of the past. I shouldn't have to sit there and wait for a blade to load!
Netflix integration is going to be great, and the installs will be nice as well. I'm sure I'll spend a few hours just playing around with everything.

Buy one. The extended warranty makes it worthwhile. The library of games is amazing. That's all you really need to know.

I have somewhere around 80 XBLA games in my list and can scroll from top to bottom without it having to buffer at all.

It's still there to some degree, but it's more for the dynamic content pages, not your games and stuff like that.
Example:
Go into game library (instant)
Select Gears of War 2 (instant)
Options comes up to play (instant), achievements (instant), but the other 2 or 3 panels are loading in the background. These would be things like DLC available, Screenshots, and GameBox Info. Each their own panel.

That's a definite improvement then. Still, it would be nice if it didn't have to load at all.
My main pet peeve was waiting for things like my game list and the other blades to load, so at least that will be largely alleviated!
