So, I have an idea for a comic book project that I am very excited to being working on. I am just doing it for fun and I do not plan to use any real art. The whole thing will be done using photos I take. The problem is I have never done anything like this and am not in a position to spend a lot of money.
All I need is to be able to choose the size and placement of my panels and word balloons, and to be able to paste in my own pictures.
Any suggestions you have on free/cheap software I could use to edit my comic would be greatly appreciated.

Gimp (http://www.gimp.org/) would work for that. Impress in OpenOffice (http://www.openoffice.org/) might also work. Neither are specifically designed to do what you want, but they're both free, open source, and will get you there.

There are a couple cheap comic creators that you can download. I even think Download.com might have had the one I tried out. I sucked at it:(

First let me start by stating I am in no way an expert on these types or programs, nor am I an artist. My last semester of college I took a class on graphic narratives and our instructor directed us to the program ComicLife (http://plasq.com/products/comiclife/win) for use in our projects. I found it to be really easy to use as someone with no background with any kind of comic creation programs.

The full version is only about $25 ($30 for the "deluxe" version with more fonts and whatnot), but if someone more knowledgeable with these things has something better in mind for cheaper (or free) then don't mind me. I used this program to create a 50-page comic out of photographs with inserted art and speech ballons for my final project and was very pleased with the results. Just my two cents.

Makes me miss my days of doing a webcomic...
In High School I also did a semi-stop motion serial called Swiss Miss: Man of Action using a Fox Mulder toy and a Bruce Campbell toy from Hercules as the bad guy. God it was funny.
