Does it really make sense to build a library of movies on a completely dead format? Once your player dies all you have is paper weights.

Well, much like BluRay will be after Downloads take over. That will be farther in the future, however.

You could always just buy combo discs...then you can always revert back to the SD-DVD version of the movie.

Same argument could be made for why you are buying movies on iTunes or the PS3 or the 360 ;)

I'm pretty sure only a few were released as combos.

Not the same argument, with iTunes you can back them up and watch them on the PC if you like. 360 is only rentals and I forget the PS3 movie selling business model but I think it was asinine.

I'm still trying to figure out how downloading a movie that is 50GB (dual sided Bluray) is reasonable within the next 15 years.

Blu is going to be around for a long time and as long as Blu is around you will be able to watch standard DVD's. HDDVD is dead right now and will never be supported.

I stand corrected. It's hard to tell what the American systems have and the Canadians don't. I thought the 360 and PS3's had movie purchase things. As for iTunes, again, I haven't tried it yet and I thought they had stricter DRM than their mp3's.

So, all in all, I stand corrected ;)

ps...just bought:
Searchers (http://hddvd.highdefdigest.com/114/searchers.html)
Bullitt (http://hddvd.highdefdigest.com/604/bullitt.html)
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (http://hddvd.highdefdigest.com/99/charlieandthechocolatefactory.html)

Three for the price (minus shipping) of 1 ;)

Thanks for the link. I'll delve deep into it tomorrow. I see they have Planet Earth for $35. Last time I tried to order it from them, they were out of stock.

I just ordered the BBC version of Planet Earth. Hopefully they won't run out this time like they did last time I tried to order it (months ago.)

I'm really really tempted to order Planet Earth right now... but I'm trying to cut spending way down. And I spent $35 on Sushi last night.

NoooOOoo..... What to do?...

Get "sick", tell the restaurant manager it was likely the sushi, get a refund, but Planet Earth.

I wish. I just love their sushi way too much. i couldn't disrespect them. On a sadder note, because I spent more than I wanted to and I also bought a new HDTV this week I ended up canceling a date with a super cute girl today because of money (obviously didn't use that as an excuse though).

Thats just really, really sad. And it hurts even more that I still might end up buying Planet Earth.... Sigh.

Because most Blu-Ray discs are between 10-20 gb with ALL the special features.

And once you make a lot of the stuff on demand, you decrease that size dramatically.

I am in a similar boat, except I did not buy Sushi, I am just flat out broke. But damn do I want Planet Earth.

Is tomorrow really that far off? Between Amazon, VuDu, and Apple, the far future is now.

Or did you just start a job at Gamestop?

It's still a ways off. Not a single one of those options beat owning the disk at this time. Either A) The quality suffers due to bandwidth issues or B) The quality is ok (still not Bluray/HDDVD quality) but its locked down by completely absurd DRM. or C) There is no easy way of watching the content on whatever screen you want to watch it on in the house.

The industry is going to have to make its way through a lot of political BS and swallow their pride and work together a little more before anything good comes around. Look at the success of Hulu, good things happen when people work together.

Its still gonna be a while...

Agreed...Downloaded movies look like crap on my tvs, less so on the 37" in the living room, but definitely on the 50" in the "entertainment room". The only advantage so far of downloaded movies is the convenience...as long as it isn't a pixelated mess.
