With this week's release of Dragon Quest 6, I've now completed the Dragon Quest collection. I had never finished one all the way, but I did enjoy them in my youth, so I got DQ1-3 for the GBC when they came out. After I started playing them about about two years ago, my plan was to go through all of them in order, but of course I took a break for DQ9 after DQ4.

Now, I'm faced with an interesting dilemma. I was just about ready to rip open DQ5 and give it a play, when I found out how much these things are selling for.

...yikes. So, what should I do?

That's a bit high, but there's far worse. The DS version is the only way you can play DQV in the US w/o using emulators and spotty fan translations, I say tear into that sucker and enjoy some old school JRPG awesomeness.

IF it was a lot of money, I would disagree with Gorvi. Since it is not (IMO), I agree with Gorvi.

Amazon can be very unreliable for pricing used games. They seem to be very inflated. However, checking ebay, it seems that if you have a still sealed copy, you can get around $50 for it. That's a bit higher than it was when it was new, but I don't think it's quite high enough to justify selling it for the profit, especially if you are a fan of the series and curious to play it.

Yeah, the fact that it's just $50 is pushing me in that direction. And eBay is such a hassle. But then, I just cleaned out the basement, so I'm putting a lot of crap on eBay next week... like this Yoshi's Island DS that I never liked.

But yeah, I have to say I'll probably have $50 worth of fun with it. I don't think I'm curious, so much as I know I'll enjoy it, as I did 1-4 and 9.

If it were me I'd play it. I would say that DQ5 is my favorite DQ game to date and the only RPG that I went out of my way to talk to absolutely every NPC I could find.

Play it. I really liked that one.

Oh, there's never been any question that I'd PLAY it. It's just a question of whether I'd wait until I'm near a Gamestop that stocks a used one. There are a few near a friend of mine's, $33 each. But, when all is said and done, I don't think it'll be worth the hassle to make like $10.

Agreed. If it was selling for like $150 or something, it would be worth it, but making $10-15? Not even worth your time, really.

Wow, I sold my copy of DQ 5 last year after beating it, on the assumption that it would be around again when I wanted it. Bummer.

It was a good game, I say keep it as part of your collection. I wish I had.

I would (and did) sell it. I got around $60 for my copy about a year ago, which is about what you could get if you sold it on half.com right now. The cheapest price there at the moment is $65.

I like DQ games, but...eh. I would much rather play through DQVIII again rather than start up any of the older games. With all of the RPGs I have in my backlog, the earlier DQ games are a little too old school to justify the time commitment.

Some quick math: You paid $35 and can 'double' your money for a net gain of $35... Which you'll inevitable pay for the game again in the future, so there is no point in selling.

As someone who has actually played the DQ5 translation, I can assure you that the translation is in no way "spotty".

It also has the advantage of remIning visually intact instead of being replaced with DQ7 quality 3D graphics.

It's not exactly DQ7 quality graphics. The battles are filled with glorious animated sprites instead of 3d models.

Wait, no, I mixed that up with the japanese PS2 versions that the DS games are ports of.
