View Full Version : Art / drawing thread

So I tried to find a thread on art/drawing, but it didn't look like there was one here. Figured it could be neat for people who like to draw pr paint or sculpt to get together and talk shop with one another.

My background is this: I was one of those kids who wanted to be an artist for a couple of years, but never really displayed any sort of talent for it. After not progressing for a while, I gave it up, save some doodles in notebooks, that sort of thing.

Last year, I took a proper art class at my university (I needed an option, and I got graded to draw shit), which started off neat, but quickly got very abstract and obtuse. I learned maybe three practical techniques that I still use. That was hundreds and hundreds of dollars well-spent.

I stayed away from drawing for a while, but a few months back, I found myself doodling more than usual. I grabbed a small sketchbook and used it to draw sometimes, and the pages started to fill quicker than I anticipated.

I'm not really very good, yet. Nobody's gonna ask to buy my shit any time soon, but for the first time in a long time, I'm enjoying drawing - and not as a social thing. Just drawing for myself. I figure it's a good hobby to have.

A lot of the time my sketches are either done with a gel-pen (Sarasa) as that's what I always have on me. But when I make a point to, or I'm at home, I like to work with Conté.

That's one thing the art class gave me - I got ample opportunity to try different mediums. Graphite's too bland and lifeless, Charcoal's got great feel and tone, but it's just too damn malleable. I like conte because it has the vibrancy and capacity for granularity, and doesn't smudge as easily as charcoal. I found a colour set for 25 bucks with 24 shades - immediately purchased.

So, I dunno. Let's all talk shop. Let's show our art and give critiques, and ask advice. I'll get the ball rolling with two drawings I did this week:

This one I did the day I saw vertigo. You know the part where jimmy stewart's falling and the screen goes all spirally? I thought it was a neat effect and tried something in that vein. The materials were some fine-point felt markers and standard medium-tooth paper.

http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w4/joshkdmw/Scan.jpg

This next one I did today. I used kind of the same background, but I wanted to see the background effect done with Conté, you know, to see it fill in better. I didn't wanna just re-create the other drawing, though, so I chose a new figure - I like to think of the figure as Bruce lee. Done with conté, same paper as before.

http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w4/joshkdmw/brucelee.jpg

Thoughts? Critiques? I'm trying to work on my anatomical proportions.

A doodle thread? Don't mind if I do!

Alright, critique time. The first picture, i'd recommend two things off the top of my head. To start with, when your scribbling in to fill up a shape, I'd say attempt to stick to the same angle and direction as you go. If you're going back over it, try to go the opposite direction. If you scribbled first horizontally, go vertically, etc. It helps to keep shapes separate from one another. Second, hit the shape in the center with a bold, thick outline. The shape gets lost a little in all the scribbling, so a good outline would help.

I don't have much to say about your second try, except the same advice about a hard outline. Specifically, a hard red outline around the red swirls would emphasis them and help the color to pop.

Hope that was seen as criticism of the constructive kind. I'd post of some my recent drawings, but my doodle's have been a skipping record of 40k stuff for months now.

Rough sketches for a funny zombie game I am trying to design.

Once I ripped off his jaw and hung the tongue out, I wanted the body to have a similar silhouette so I pulled an intestine out. I think the idea works.

Heh, yeah. The zombies in my game would be a little more active and way more excitable than a Romero zombie. Actually if you can imagine them as similar to the headless screaming berserkers in Serious Sam, that's sort of the comedic tone I was going for.

Here's a few select sketches I've been working on in the past few days. I tend to get obsessed with certain subjects and try to wring as much possible creativity out of them as possible.

My current obsession is the Blood Pact, the Khorne equivalent of the Imperial Guard in the Gaunt's Ghosts 40k novels. Think of them as an evil version of a modern army. In the books, they're described as wearing iron masks featuring sneering, hook nosed grotesques. I decided to take a little liberty with the iron masks, giving each squad of soldiers a different central theme their particular masks are based on.

Boy, I'll say. Conte's tricky, too. I'll try very slight shading next time I do the lips.

You can also try experimenting with partial outlines. For the shape of an object, trace only the part of the outline that is away from the light and vary the pressure so it's thicker on the far part, growing thinner, until there's nothing on the lighter side.

Quick question for people who use Photoshop: I'm teaching myself how to use PS to paint/draw/etc. and I'm running into a problem that I can't figure out. When drawing, say, a cartoon and I get all of the shading down and try to outline it in black, no matter what brush I try, the lines aren't smooth. They always look jagged and like they've been clearly drawn on a computer.

Any idea what brush I should hunt down or what settings I should use to get something smoother and more clean? I'd like to have a good solid outline to some of the art and it's just not happening.

Sounds like you don't have the anti-alias option turned on. If you're using CS2-3-or4 they usually stick the settings for the brush you're using up top.

Blue

Bone
04-13-2011, 08:44 AM
That sounds like it. The brush has a checkmark option for anti-aliasing. Other things to check are the overall image size you're drawing on, as well as the image mode you selected when you created the new image (for example, Indexed image mode works from a small palette of colors and doesn't do anti-aliasing for you).

Ink's stuff is incredible. Seriously, that's some pro level work right there.

For the first time in my life, I've been rather prolific in my drawing habits. Quite ironic, seeing as I hardly ever drew for fun while getting my Art degree. So I have almost two full sketch books worth of new drawings, all character studies, almost all 40k inspired. I should really branch out, but inspiration can't be controlled

Unfortunately, I fucking hate the slow process of scanning my stuff or taking shitty web cam pics. BUT! If I get drunk enough tonight, I might just do it anyway. So when that happens, prepare yourselves for an epic pic dump.

So after finishing all of my finals tonight, I finally sat down and scanned a good 50 or so drawings. That's the good news. The bad news is the scanner decided to chose its own focus point, instead of scanning the full page, so I have about 15 usable ones and dozens of jpegs of the small bit of the scanner that wasn't covered by my sketch books. I fuckin love technology!

So I uploaded a couple of them to Deviant Art and here's the hand full that don't look like complete shit...

Looks like Deviant Art doesn't link correctly. Sweet, more trouble posting these stupid drawings! So I guess it's time to crawl back to photobucket.

I've been doing as bit of daily sketch exercise.

Some of them I sketch on the 3DS...

Other times I sketch on my ereader.
http://posterous.com/getfile/files.posterous.com/kamalot/nORViRaCKVnjVBjNz3WuHIoDCULSl8ZKmGsdsoDzNL4TKBXXT7 x3lMK8W2zj/farm.jpg (http://kamalot.posterous.com/farm-61277)

And yet other times I simply use paper.
http://posterous.com/getfile/files.posterous.com/kamalot/LDdxboAwiSdZ8JU9g7FaUX1HT99fZkLGenwFW675VonvobPnzI 6bsZkKywEm/CIMG0056_M_J.jpg.scaled.1000.jpg (http://kamalot.posterous.com/chuchu)

It isn't professional, polished, or even clean. I try and do it as a daily exercise... like working out. So my sketches are kinda like my imagination in sweatpants.

Been putting things up on a new blog (http://kamalot.posterous.com/). Trying to do it every day. We'll see how long it lasts.

Thanks!

I'l admit, I dunno what I am doing. I cut my animation teeth with Flipnote Studio.

You have a knack that is hard to teach. Just the little motions of the dude's head, when he gets startled for a sec (and the startled lines coming from his head) are timed really well. Keep at it.

I've been pissing about on with this for far too long! I rushed the colours in the end because I got bored. I'm not even much of a Voyager fan! :/

Is it possible to go from being absolutely worthless at drawing to pretty decent? I've wanted to learn how to draw for a long time but I always give up. I'm like a blind person, I see that stuff looks wrong but I couldn't correct it if my life depended on it, it's like stuttering. Recently I've been trying to learn how to do some simple pixel art for a game and I don't know how people do it.

Few people start with something above a worthless level of drawing talent. It may be harder to learn as an adult than as a kid/teenager, but it's entirely possible.

Don't get frustrated with what comes out wrong. Take real classes about the fundamentals of drawing instead of just copying artists you see. Draw every day, for at least an hour.

I had a bit of a piss about this morning whilst my 9 month old was having a nap. I like it but I maybe overdid the dirt/scratches a bit as it's too dark imo! Oh well! :)
