Shit, I suppose I'm gonna have to switch boxes again.
Much as I've given Valve shit over L4D and their motives for making it, and even the studio they chose for it, I gotta admit, I'll try damn near anything once if it's free, unless it's a Korean MMO.

Well, I just pre-ordered. I guess the early demo and slight discount was all it took to completely forget what the responsible action would have been, which would have been an internal HDD for my 700$ yet totally useless computer.

It's most likely the entire game, but most of the files encrypted or whatever, then you don't have to download the whole thing again on the 18th.

Yeah, I think that this is the entire game, or at least, the core of the game. From what I've read, this is a pretty robust demo, which I'm hoping will be able to last me until the 18th.
If not...eh, there's always Gears :D

Leave early. There will probably be more people to play with and you don't have to worry about having to leave for work while playing.

I really hope so.
Downloading this is putting me close to the limit for the month; I still haven't been able to download the Witcher which I bought last month and I haven't bought Fallout 3 or Far Cry 2 because I just don't have the bandwidth to get them all 8(
Also want Tomb Raider on steam so I have no idea what I'm gonna do.

A terrible 25GB a month, where uploads count to downloads.
I just got lucky, though; I starter preloading this and it went through telstra servers or whatever, so it was "free usage" for me, which rarely ever happens.
I wish I knew enough about computers and networks to fiddle with it so that all my steam content came through those servers.

I'm extremely jealous. We have wireless everywhere (Sans two buildings where the wireless is totally fucked. Which apparently have to do with the way they were constructed, as they're both newer buildings on campus), but they block ports like crazy. I can't access Steam, Trillian, WoW, Warhammer and other programs. I'm actually surprised I can still get on Gametap at school.

Motherfucker...I just pre-ordered this last night, but did not see any link to the demo DL. Now I am going to be waiting when I get home.
Lon-Lon: I feel your pain. I have a 60GB cap as well. Luckily, the maximum overage charges are $25, so I am just going to choose one month out of 4 or so to go nuts with the downloads, and pay my $25 premium. Not the prime solution, but DSL is not an option for me right now. My apartment's phone lines are borked, and since I only have a cell phone, no one is willing to fix them unless I cough up big dough.

You've still got more than double my limit!
Also, just check your "Not Installed" section on your steam games list, if you've preordered then "Left 4 Dead Demo" should be there waiting for you to preload.

Really intense and engrossing.

First game on normal we breezed through and only a couple people got knocked over but no one died.
Now we're playing on advanced and not getting too far.
I'm playing with pubbies but it's hilarious to hear people scream when they genuinely get frightened by the game. One guy was the last alive and had been talking about how high he was and how none of this phased him when suddenly a smoker tongue shot through the window and he started screaming like a little girl.
It was awesome.

Yep.
The bots are a lot more competent than pubbies, too.
I just finished advanced easily because all the pubbies dropped and were replaced by bots and it was a cakewalk.
Man the witch is intense, the first game we startled her by accident really quickly and she attacked us, but in this one we crept slowly all the way up to her and right when I was about to auto-shotty (best weapon I've found so far) her in the face she looks right at me and jumps up. Freaked me right out.

Seems there are almost no dedicated servers so everyone defaults to hosting their own games, which is always laggy as hell and full of connection issues.

I've been having trouble joining friend games too, but at least part of my problem was that it wanted to download another little update after I started playing.
I tried sneaking up on the witch to melee her, but she looked up and saw me right before I swung. I also deliberately shot a car to set the alarm off and played Melee the Boomer that game, and still made it through somehow! :D

You're not missing the cream of the crop however. I just got done playing, or should say TRIED to play. There is no server browser, you can't join a server, you can only join a game lobby which will search for a free dedicated server. Of course there weren't any (which I don't think will change, who will want to buy a dedicated server where you have no control over it, and might never actually play on it). Valve needs to change that in a hurry. People are going to think this game sucks ass because they are playing on some kids 256k DSL line across the country.
Lon Lon Rabbit
11-06-2008, 10:51 AM
There are dedicated servers, just hardly any, it was easy to play on them when the demo first went up but now it's almost impossible to snag one.
I love all the little touches in this with some of the very subtle animations, and I love the movie stylising; the loading screen is cool and when you're dead and watching your friends getting swarmed and the music is playing this quiet requiem like everyone is going to die (which often happens, especially on expert).

Wow, I can't believe how badly the fucked up the PC end of this. The consolized matchmaking is terrible. As it stands now, there's no incentive to buy a dedicated server, as you'll just spend all your time booting people off the server while the matchmaking system piles more in.
After some initial lag problems, I hosted a listen server. I don't know how it was for the clients connecting, but it seemed to work ok.
The game itself is fantastic. We played all our rounds on the "Advanced" difficulty, which is just about right. We had a couple of wipes, but we could make it through about 60% of the time. Normal is probably too easy for most people.
The boss infected are downright nasty, Boomers aren't so bad but if a smoker or a hunter gets ahold of you, be prepared to lose 25-50% of your health - if your teammates are paying attention. The tank and the witch seem to be an either/or situation on the second level, and we never downed them without losing a person or two.
The levels have a bunch of alternate paths, it's nothing major but it does help make the game more interesting during multiple playthroughs. The weapons, ammo and health locations are mostly randomized, so there's plenty of incentive to thoroughly explore the map every time you play. There's also a bunch of breakable walls that zombies can break through.
I can't wait to try the versus mode, I think that's really where most people will spend the majority of the time. The campaign is also fantastic, it really lives up to my expectations.

Maybe they just disabled it to see if the Quickmatch function works...basically, force people to use it to see how well it works in large numbers of people.

Same for me, except in singleplayer, there everything runs smoothly.

I don't have a particularly hot processor, but it seems like I can host 2 players besides myself pretty decently. It gets a bit choppy with 3, especially at the end of the second level, but it's playable.
If they can optimize the listen server performance just a tiny bit, then we might not need dedicated servers at all... except for versus mode, of course.

I already have to deal with "LAN" games on Live, I play multi-player games on the PC so I can avoid dealing with them.

How do you set up a listen server? Or do you mean when you can't get a dedicated server, and choose the "host as lan" option, or whatever its called?
Edit: Yeah, I guess the lan option is a listen server, which sometimes works, sometimes doesn't.

I'm sure there will be plenty of dedicated servers out when the time comes...look at TF2 and the number of dedicated servers...
Maybe we can get the Rainwave server hosting some Left4Dead nights...I wouldn't know what the cost would be or if that was workable, but I'm sure we'll band together and work something out, right? :)

can we ourselves set up dedicated servers with the demo version? i'm at work right now so i can't load up and see. I'd be glad to put my spare PC up as a server, and i'm on a 16mbs connection with great upload so with any luck, that might work well to get a good game going. I'm stuck at work for another 4 hours however.

Thing about hosting a dedicated server: at the moment, there's no way to lock it or anything. So if you host a dedicated, it gets filled with random people. There's no way to purposefully connect to your own server. It's retarded. Hopefully they'll fix that issue.

well, there goes that idea.
unless there is some hidden console command to set a password. I'm sure people have tried that though.

Finally got a match that found a dedicated server. Played with two other guys (I think there might have been someone from here as well, playing under the title Illradian.CoG or something like that) and had a BLAST. I played for a good two hours or so before just logged off now because I gotta pick up my girlfriend soonish. We played on expert and kept getting our asses handed to us in the train station; the furthest we ever made it was to the part where you get out of the trains and head in towards that area with all the pillars where the zombies are shambling around. Each time in this area and a bit before, we kept getting our asses wrecked by the tank. Didn't help that we'd fairly consistently mow each other down too; I ended-up mowing Zoey and Lious (whoever was playing them) on accident because they stood in the hallway I had just exited and the tank was rushing them.

Once the game actually launches, everything will smooth out. The main problem is people's connections just suck, so when they end up hosting everyone suffers.

The game actually got a bit choppy on my system, but it's hard to tell whether it was because Ax joined, or because we were at that final room. That last room has been choppy on a few separate occasions now.

Hey you...don't be greedy (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=744545). :D
Hell yeah, I scooped that sucker up. Those codes are one time use, if someone else has already entered it, they're no good. There's no time for generosity, and as you can see that thing was valid for 4 mins. At least you know one more person to play the demo with now ;).
Ironically, it's actually easier to find a match right now on the 360 version. The interface I was complaining about is much better on the console version, since the matchmaking system can see the dedicated servers. On the PC side you have to wait for the search to time out and start up a listen server. People aren't going to subsidize the PC server costs if the matchmaking system is constantly filling up your server. I expect to see most of the servers passworded.

Of course there weren't any (which I don't think will change, who will want to buy a dedicated server where you have no control over it, and might never actually play on it). Valve needs to change that in a hurry.Welcome to the world of Achievements and online stat tracking.

Yah, I ran into that earlier...I was playing with one other person...another joined as a spectator and then promptly kicked both of us out...so, I'm assuming that was the owner of the dedicated server making room for him and his buddies.

I don't understand your point. In order for achievements and online stat tracking to be viable. The developer/publisher needs to reign over the dedicated servers so that people can't just run servers that report false information. This means people need to pay for servers that they technically don't have real control over.
So, in essence, I don't see this changing anytime soon. Unless people don't care about achievements or anything, in which case they could probably setup something, though I doubt it would work through the in-game server browser as it is.

Side issue, but I have no idea why anyone cares about Steam Achievements. They have no numerical value, they're not tied together across games, and they're worth nothing. Live Achievements at least have a "shame" factor built into them by making the possible points known to all. (Not that I care about those either, but I can see how a real OCD personality would need the completion.) I guess I just don't get it.

I can agree with that. Point of fact, I couldn't give the slightest bit of a shit about someone else cheating their own achievements, and the idea of Valve potentially adopting gestapo-like server tactics to ensure the veracity of said achievements is twelve kinds of dumb, IMO.
The achievements in TF2 have been fun and I like collecting them, but I'm certainly not compulsive about it. I hope that L4D's are the same.

The worst thing to happen to TF2 was tying the new weapons to Achievements thereby "legitimizing" them. All it did was encourage people to grind or get on cheat servers to get them.

This is exactly WHY I care about them.
Achievements are a great idea, gamerscore is not.
With no numerical value I don't have any drive to go out of my way to get them, and instead it's very cool to see them just pop up mid game when I completed one unknowingly. It means, as Spectre said, I'm not compulsive about getting them and it's just a secondary, bonus thing to the game, not something which will make me change the way I play to increase an arbitrary number.
Using them to hide content like TF2 is not great, as that brings about the same problems as gamerscore does, but achievements on Steam are otherwise done the right way I feel.
