I've been using Comcast for a long time, and I always tell them I am cancelling my service so they give me promotional rates. Now that I don't have cable anymore, I think it's time to switch to something else. I've never had any big issues with them, but they are a little pricey.

Anyone know a decent place to compare/research ISPs? I've always gone with the most obvious option (usually Comcast) and don't really know where to start looking for other options. I've tried doing some searches and checking out the yellow pages and stuff, and either all ISPs are awful, or I just don't know where to look. :o

EDIT: Blaaaaaah, after doing some research at DSLReports, Comcast might end up being my best bet. BLAAAAAAAH! I was hoping to get a decent deal elsewhere, but now I suppose I will just call and haggle like I normally do.

The sad part is if I posted this in Japan (http://www.speedtest.net/global.php#0,4,78), everyone's download numbers would have been closer to 50mbps. I wonder just how much faster the internet feels in japan? Since you still need good servers to serve you on that fat pipe, and in the U.S., not all servers are all that fast.

TheKeck
02-10-2011, 12:53 PM
I've found that the bottleneck on download speeds is almost always the server you are pulling from and not your own connection.

I know a bunch of people who hate comcast but I haven't had any problems with them personally. I don't like their business practices and politics much, but they have always supplied me with fat pipes, so I stick with them for now.

Anyone have a good ISP suggestion for central Florida? I live in the middle of nowhere, but surely I can do better than this. My Xbox is always getting cut off from LIVE and this obviously interrupts my Netflix viewing. Downloading a file for school the other day took over 3 hours, and it was 152 mb. Few things make me want to Hulk-rage, but my bandwidth is at the top of that list.

This is the downside to DSL. Air Video on my iPad looks like Youtube videos circa 2005.

But the alternative is an openly crooked cable company that routinely screws it's subscribers at every possible juncture. Both myself and my roommate have been sent to collections by BendBroadband over hardware we already returned to the company. It actually is one of the things that prevented me from entering the Air Force.

That 11Mb/s is actually a bit higher than the advertised 10Mb on my connection. I'll assume it's a rounding error.

I actually got into the Samknows/FCC (http://www.samknows.com/broadband/fcc_and_samknows) program, and have been using their whitebox (it's actually black) router since early January. The reporting online is pretty cool.

http://tonytoon.home.insightbb.com/samknows.png

I get a free router, nice reporting capabilities, and the FCC gets to collect real-world data of questionable value that they probably won't end up doing anything with to improve ISP quality in the US. Win/win!

I'm paying $60 a month for the highest AT&T UVerse speed they have. Since I do a lot of work from home I want to have the fastest speed I could get. The funny thing is that I was paying about the same amount for Time Warner and that was half the speed of this. Not surprising since Time Warner is absolutely horrible.

I only have ten megabits. The school is capable of handing out much faster internet to the dorms if they so choose, but here they chose not to. Last year I lived in a new dorm in a pretty dodgy location -- there were some two-hundred steps between it and campus, which is no good in winter here -- so the school used fast internet to bait people into signing to live there. As a result I had a 100 megabit connection. Some people on the board didn't even believe me, insisting it was megabytes! It was awesome.

I miss those days.

It doesn't offend me, as much as annoy me that the best connection I can get, inside a semi-major city, outside of a commercial line is slower than connections people get out in the middle of nowhere, as you described.

It really annoys me when people try to argue that the lack of higher speed broadband in the US is due to the size of the country. Even the major population centers get fuck all for internet connections.

Try having cable within a half mile and the cable company telling you it will cost $30k, or you personally at least $700 (plus the other 18 homes need to sign up, or your cost sky rockets.). Screw last mile build costs.

This thread made me jealous. I'm paying Qwest like $42 a month for 7Mb/768Kb service. I hate the DSL upload speeds. I've been thinking of switching to Comcast for cable internet, but I like the price I pay overall for Qwest home phone, DSL, and DirecTV.

I currently pay $139 (including fees and taxes) a month for TV, phone and internet. Checking Comcast, their triple play bundle is $120 plus $5/month for a phone modem, plus $10/month if I want a DVR, plus taxes and fees. And that price is promotional, and will go up after 12 months. But you do get a $150 Visa gift card with it, which knocks down the price a little if you count that in ($12.50 a month for a year). So really, Comcast would be about the same for the service for a year, but I'd get a few more TV channels than I currently get, and faster internet (their Performance plan is 15/3 per their site - with powerboost!!). Really, the TV channels are for the kids and wife anyway - she wants HGTV and FoodTV, the kids want Disney and Disney XD. Everything else is a bonus I guess.

I think I'm just going to settle for the cheaper price I am paying for crappier service. We are talking about moving out of state next year anyway, so any 2 year contract would be bad if I have to change service providers. I guess I have to settle for being jealous of everyone else's speeds for now.

Just switched to DSL after many many years of cable.

I'm at work right now so I can't post the image, but I consistently get between 37 and 38 Mb for $36 a month.

What planet do you live on to achieve that kind of down speed? Wow that's fantastic.

$40 a month for six months. $70 afterwards. Still worth it.

Edit: I notice that a lot of you subscribe (and hate) Time Warner / RR. All of your guys' Speedtest results are abysmal. What a terribly worthless ISP.

I dunno, I just got my DOCSIS 3 modem and got these results for Road Runner:

Can't say I'm finding them to be slow or abysmal :)

First test, but not sure these DL numbers are representative of the average. May try again during late night, but my downloads are nice - no complaints.

We're on fiber at work. It's pretty awesome.

I noticed that it says that your ISP is Comcast Business class. Is this true? If so, those speeds don't seem quite right.

WHY is my upload speed so damn low? All my tests have come back this way.

I'd blame Gamefly.

I pay $35/month + tax which comes to about $40 per month. No caps or throttling which is sooo valuable heh :).

Comcast recently upgraded my speeds for free. My numbers are skewed a bit by power boost, but I've been really happy with my service here. I think I'm actually promised 12/2 or 15/3.

Powerboost definitely skews these results, and doesn't speedtest.net only report the maximum speed, not the average? I generally use testmy.net when I want a more accurate, and more depressing measurement.

EDIT: showing 14.7 Mbps on testmy.net. That's 1.8375 MB/s...not too terrible.

Fascinating in that I haven't run a speedtest at home since before they replaced that dud drop outside. Until then, I was almost always in the 3Mbps range for download speed, and was thinking it was bittersweet that the phone was faster (floats between 2M and 9M depending on location). Guess that's changed with the new line. :o
