View Full Version : Dead Space controls for PC are terrible.

I'm surprised that I seem to be the first one bringing this up on this forum. The controller scheme sucks. I did some digging (http://whatifgaming.com/dead-space-pc-version-perplexed-with-control-problems-and-issues-not-fluid-enough) around (http://forums.ea.com/mboards/thread.jspa?threadID=452602&tstart=0&start=0) the (http://forums.ea.com/mboards/thread.jspa?threadID=451621&tstart=0&start=0) official forums (http://forums.ea.com/mboards/thread.jspa?threadID=458713&tstart=0&start=0) and boy, there are a lot of complaints about this very issue.

1) No proper key binding.
2) Horrible mouse control movement.
3) Horrible mouse control transition from standard view to aiming
4) Mediocre texture detailing designed for 4yr old console hardware.
5) Extremely limited AA option.
6) Excessive ammo left over designed for the ease of play on a console.
7) Inability to bind up and down scroll wheel.
8) Extremely predictable AI.
9) Innefficent use of a 4 core system considering it is a modern day game.
10) Bonuses offered on the console version that are not even offered on the PC version considering the game was made ON a PC.These are all things I am experiencing. Very, very limited customization. I'm disappointed.

I've been playing a lot of Dead Space on PC recently, and would like to throw my two cents in.

1, 7) Can't comment on this, I've been using a 360 controller with zero issues. If I weren't and it's true that you can't remap anything, then I'd be annoyed too.
2, 3) There was a post somewhere about disabling v-sync to help with mouse latency until it gets patched. Not an excuse, but it may help some of these mouse-related quibbles.
4) The textures look fantastic on my rig, maybe if the settings are lower they look worse ...?
5) Certainly happy with the AA as it is, I've not been stabbed by any jaggies.
6) Hunh? On what difficulty, easy? There are ups and downs, but rarely do I ever feel like I have too much ammo.
8) Once they reveal themselves, yeah, I guess.
9) As long as there's no perceptible chugging or FPS dip, I don't get outraged.
10) All console games are made ON a PC (and are technically PCs as well, but I digress). However, if there are bonuses on the console not on the PC version, than color me disappointed on that mark.

I'll try turning off V-sync.

I got Dead Space for the PC and tried to play it. Horrible horrible.

After doing a Google search, I went out and bought a 360 Wireless Receiver for the PC for 20 dollars.

Dead Space will automatically work with a 360 controller with no setup needed. The controls now work as intended. Since this game was made to be played on a gamepad of some sort it was a lot more natural than using the keyboard/mouse combination.

Of course, since it is on the PC, having a gaming controller shouldn't be a requirement for the game, but in this case it sort of is (for better or worse).

Edit: oh yea, turning off V-sync is a must, but it only helps so much.

Here's the CoG thread on the V-Sync issue:

Oh and I will say that having a mouse was handy for the turret sections ;)

... Why didn't I think of that. The turret mini-games stunk with the analog stick ;_;.

God, am I the only one who didn't have a problem with the controls?

Turn the fscking mouse sensisitvity to max. That's it, you're done. I played the entire game like that and it ran fine for me.

The only problem I had with the entire game was the fact that I couldn't move Isaac to the right side of the screen.

Just a little bit into Chapter 7 now, gameplay's fine for me. The shooting isn't exactly inspired but I'm enjoying the creepy narrative.

Even with the vsync problem the controls weren't that bad once you 'got your eye in' and i have no idea why you think the games textures are bad... it's easily one of the best looking games i've played this year and not only that it's one of the visually and visceral games i've played ever. There is a lot of extremely cleaver stuff going on in the level designed and lighting that makes most of the game a wonderful experience.

The AI is dumb in a sense but there all but hoards of screaming zombies, they are not meant to be that intelligent and the difficulty comes from dealing effectively with large numbers of mixed bad guys trying to take each down in a way that saves you ammo. Talking of which i've never felt there was an over abundance of it. So long as you see the game for being the action game with survival horror elements than an a pure survival game then the ammo starts to make sense. There's been sections where i've been very very limited on ammo and have had to get rather creative with how i'm killing things to get through them.

As for the rest of your whining all i can say is... what? ok it's a pain that there's not much in the way of key binding and the like but is that really such a huge issue? i had no problem what so ever with the binds as they came and as for not using cores very well... let's just say i was playing stalker clear skies the other day and you have to trick the game (using the task manager) to get it to really use more than one core... i also have no idea what these "Bonuses" where and even if there is something substantial (not just achievements) what the hell dose that have to do with the game being made on a PC? There's a wonderful world of licensing deals where in a competitive market place companies like microsoft and sony will pay for extra things in a product... shocking isn't it?

All in all dead space is easily one of my games of the year which is shocking given i didn't really care all that much about it until i started to play it. What ever platform you play it on it's brilliant and if your going to ignore it for what are over blown internet whinings then you deserve not to play one of the best games of the year

I played Easy and I didn't run into ammo problems too much, although I did here and there. Thankfully, the game balances Ammo drops to what you're carrying.

i've been rocking my wireless xbox reciever for some time, for $20 to use my 360 controller & wireless headset with my pc, well worth it for dead space and other more console friendly titles. or if i just feel like playing PC on the couch w/ a gamepad. (which there is nothing wrong with!)

and really, the game looks great and plays just fine.

Quit being a whiny bitch!

Here's your key/mouse button remaps :

And the aiming lag is fixed by turning off Vsync. 100% works.
FUD destroyed. Carry on, gentlemen.

I was gonna say...what modern PC title doesn't let you rebind keys? I almost never use the defaults. Myth busted! ;)
