Aeria Games has announced the beginning of a close beta for their PC MMO: Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine Online.

This free to play MMO is based on the popular Japanese RPG franchise, which includes the Persona and Digital Devil Saga games.

Apply for the beta here (http://megaten.aeriagames.com/signup).

I'm very curious how good this game will or will not be. Since it's free to play, at least on the surface, that will make it very easy to try out. At the very least, I'm curious to play the game that sucked up a little too much of Atlus Japan's cash when they were developing it.

There are also screenshots showing off the game. I like the ones that showcase players running around with some of the archetypal demons from MegaTen.

Me too. Other than my work laptop, which is fairly new, my only computer is a PC that was mid-range when I put it together six years ago.

I don't think my work would ever know that I installed it. As long as I don't play at work, I don't think anyone would know. Then I'd just move it over to my own computer when I finally upgrade.

Besides, you've got to play. I'm not much of an online gamer, but I'd like to play with you given the chance.

Man, I'd love to, but I think my work actually would notice. They monitor stuff like that rather closely.

I guess I couldn't get ya to play FFXI, huh? ;)

Judging by the screenshots this game could run on a cellphone. Looks like a PS1 game to me.

Probably not. I try to have a policy of not paying monthly fees for games. It's also the old codger in me that wants to be sure I can still play any game I have ten, twenty, or even thirty years later and not be dependent on a live server somewhere. I'd hate to sink hundreds of dollars into a game to watch the server die one day and I can never play again. I value the ability to pull out my NES any time I want and play Crystalis.

But with this, since it's "free to play," the barrier of entry is low enough that I'm willing to give it a shot.

I don't know, I think it looks more like a mid-range PS2 game. But yeah, I don't think anyone's arguing that this game will be able to stand up to any of the moderately large or popular MMOs in depth or graphical quality. It's mainly going to attract people like me, the big fans of Atlus games, and people who don't care that much about graphics.

I can see that, I guess. It will bother me when the servers are gone, but I've gotten my fair time in.

Is this actually a free to play game, or are you just talking about the beta? If it is free to play, that's something to worry about a bit, as they usually lock all the stuff you'd want to do/get behind stuff you'd need to pay for, and more often than not if you play a decent bit you end up paying more than you would for a game with a monthly fee.

What the heck, someone already has a username of NoName4444. I've never been unable to use that alias before, now I'm not sure what to use as a username. Whatever it is I'm sure I'll forget it...

Good, then my system can run it.

Somebody had Shrinn too, and apparently it wasn't me. Completely threw me for a loop.

Also, the supposed system requirements:

A Megaten MMO? Sign me up!

In fact, I just did! Now to see if I get in.

It's free to play in general, not just the beta. It seems that's how this company works. They do a number of small MMO's that charge you for special items. Like you, I'm apprehensive about this sort of business model, but I hope I wouldn't be too interested in breaking out my wallet frequently for it.

That's really strange that all these names were taken. Mine was available without any issues.

That's really strange that all these names were taken. Mine was available without any issues.Well, the site exists for more than just the Megaten game. I've found that if a site has been around for a while, the likelihood of Spigot being available drops significantly.
