While I like that we had a thread just about voting, it just seems weird to not have a real election thread.
I'm so pumped about the election, guys...seriously. I can't wait for results to come rolling in.

I follow CNN too. They seem to have the best coverage.
I went out to vote today during my lunch break at 1:30 in the afternoon and faced a wait time of 15 seconds to cast a ballot. When I signed in, the guy monitoring my signature screamed out my name and political affiliation. I asked "whats that all about" and he mentioned he had to as their were pollsters (4 individuals behind him) keeping their own account of who came in to vote. I don't know how I feel about that.
What I really hate is the people that stand outside and try to sway your vote at the last second. "Please consider Candidate X". Fuck off. I know who I'm voting for. Your just wasting my time, patience and the paper you chose to write your "preferred ballot selections" on. Today, they actually cock blocked me getting in the building versus just hugging the sides of the sidewalk and reaching out to me. I had to give a very forceful "Excuse me!" just to get the prick to move.

Most of that is illegal in some states (as it should be imo). As far as the guy yelling out your name and political affiliation, thats extremely questionable anywhere.

Saturday Night Live was playing around with one of those last Thursday. Fred Armisen was moving states around, and changing the "projections" at will, making it a landslide for either side.
It was sweet messing around with the Microsoft Surface at the Marriott in Seattle at PAX. Too bad the demo units were limited to just maps and pre-loaded music and pictures. Playing Dawn of War 2 or Supreme Commander would be totally awesome on those.

Electoral votes can often end up that way, but in terms of popular vote, the country is split about 51-49 or 52-48.

CNN is calling Obama getting CA with 0% reported. WTF?
Well, it is California you're talking about. Los Angeles and San Fransisco outweigh the rest of the state in terms of voter turnout. The majority of the state tends to vote republican overall, but the two hubs outweigh it all.
Now, if we had actually gone through with doing the electoral vote split like Sacramento was talking about back after 2004, who knows what would be different.

Only 6% reporting, but that's discouraging. Why do people have such a problem with Gay marriage? They can't force a church to marry them, it's already a topic in schools, it isn't going to turn your kids gay and frankly, its no one's buisness other than theirs. Just let em marry eachother so they can get tax benefits and be able to visit one another in the hospital.

Your standards would not match the rest of the world, in that case. But again, the genetics don't matter. America perceived him as black and they elected him.
While I think the immediate or direct effect of this might be being overstated (to early IMO), it is still greatly significant. No matter your political affiliation, you can't ignore it is a significant historical point for our government and country.

This will sound so weird but, ever since I voted for Obama this morning I feel like I've bought 4 years worth of "street cred". My 350 pound black friend Kai came over this evening to watch the election coverage. I went to walmart to return some movies to redbox and decided to grab something to eat and what did I get?
A whole Fried Chicken. When I got back to the apartment I asked Kai if he thought I was celebrating to early. He thought it was hilarious :D(and grabbed a drumstick)
It's so odd. I really do feel like this tension I've always personally felt regarding every black person I've ever known has just lessened to a major degree. It feels GOOD.
8 years of the worst president in history. If that's what it took to get this outcome in the polls today then... it would seem 'dubya' finally made a positive contribution to history.
Considering the 2 prior elections I've been a part of so far, it's not surprising that I feel disenfranchised by our election process. This one however has single-handedly instilled a passionate desire in me to be aware of and involved in political affairs.
Now the work begins. This is the future I've dreamed about since I was a kid.

I honestly don't understand the nanny state concept, so sorry if that seems a stupid question.
The nanny state is when the government tells you how to live you life and cotton-wooling you to death. I saw road workers in hardhats and fluro jackets the other day.... it was a road, on the ground. You must wear bicycle helmets, you must do this, you must do this.
Conservatism believes the government can fuck right off and people can do as they please as long as they don't hurt people besides themselves. This has always been strangely at odds with things like gay marriage on the religious right.
I expect that's the reason for the rise of libertarianism now, right wing in most issues and leftish in social ones like gay marriage. These people are not to be confused with Libertarian party who is made of up of raving nut bags.

edit, oh your not American heh, to lazy to rewrite my post or check the rest of this thread to see if your joking or not... i've spent most of the night on a small forum with some people who honest to god voted for mccain and are really upset that Obama has won... still, the rest of you US types can read it, yup.
yes beacuse people being given hope by some one who may actually be intelligent is such a horrid thing... people being motivated to make there country better? awful!
The speech he just gave was stunning for me, it brings back that hope that i will get back that America i can actually respect that i remember from my some what younger days now. I've always held a deep admiration for the best American leaders (from both sides) which was wipped out in an instant by that grinning fool you felt the need to put in to office. I'd almost given up hope of getting that back.
Like it not the US is a powerful important nation for the world that i like to live in and almost any one who is even vaguely on the left of your last administration with more importantly out that administrations ties would have been better than mccain. Yet better than that we have some one who is offering to bring back the meaning of the word "presidential" in the way that i remember it who very nature is going to do wonders for you world image and will open up so many doors that have been slammed closed for years... well... that is an offer of hope that you are fools for ignoring.
Of course it's all unproven and nothing can or will change over night and we have no idea how it's all going to work out... its all very very risky in a lot of ways but all i can say is that for myself and people i know is that we are now looking to the future of your country with hope, not fear. With the opportunity of respect for your leaders instead of contempt.
I don't even know what else to say really, accept that his won and accept that the dice have already been rolled and just be glad that people are hopeful and not apathetic and resigned.

This was insane. I was working the polls here in Chicago, and holy cockballs batman, there were so many people voting. My dorm is right by grant park, and holy shit, I could hear his speech from here. It was jaw droppingly good.
And maharahaj, both those things are HIGHLY illegal. In every polling place there has to be a 100 ft quardened off area where there can be no campaigning in front of the place, and they cannot do anything of what you mentioned. You should have told a judge, because that is some serious bull.
As for them shouting your affiliation, that is also illegal and an invasion of your privacy. There is no need for the pollwatchers to know that information. They get their own tape at the end of the night that tallys the votes and whatnot, the only other job that they have is to report how many people have voted at certain times of the day. If I were you, I'd have that reported, because that sounds like some serious breach of ethics there.

What a great night. McCain gave a great concession speech (apparently ignored by his booing crowd), and Obama's oration was Periclean. The Democrats have a majority in the House and Senate and are in a position to undo what the Bush administration wrought to our rights and international reputation.
No matter who you voted for, everyone should be happy to have participated in what will be remembered as a historic election, and one of the most important in the country's history.
If you disagree with what happens next, just remember that democracy is usually a pendulum. We swing back and forth between liberalism and conservativism and gradually, erratically make the kind of progress that both sides can get behind.
Conservatism believes the government can fuck right off and people can do as they please as long as they don't hurt people besides themselves. This has always been strangely at odds with things like gay marriage on the religious right.
Not to mention surveillance.
Yup, it's over. It'll be all over YouTube post-haste, if it's not already.
It's not there yet, but I'll check it tomorrow when I'm sure it will be.
I'm happy with the result because while I have always liked McCain and wish he would have won the Republican nomination back in 2000, my problem was that he chose Governor Palin as his Vice Presidential nominee while being 72 and having had cancer. The fact that she was found to be guilty of ethics violations by her own Republican state legislature, billed her state for her time staying at her home, and the fact that she would choose to legislate evangelical choices in other people's private lives that are not choices upheld by her own family all make me scared that McCain might not be able to serve his full term.
Plus, the economy was the biggest issue for me, and history (and economists) have shown us that taxing big corporations more while giving more money to normal American consumers stimulates the economy.
It's also about selfishness. . . I want to pay less taxes and I want my family to pay lower taxes. My parents only make about $150K/year with both their salaries, dividends from their retirement investments, and losses from our little ranch (or around $200K/year when it needs to show a profit and they sell off more cattle. . . with 60% of the money from those sells going to Uncle Sam), and they'll be paying a little bit more, but they voted for Obama because they don't mind giving a little bit more when they have more (they already give a lot of money away to the church and to their grubby poor kids in college, so paying an extra $500 doesn't bug them as long as they know they'll still have jobs and hopefully their stocks will be worth more come retirement). I probably won't ever make enough to get in the over $250K/year tax bracket, but if I do. . . well, then I'll probably vote for a Republican.

For me this quote sums the success of the day the most.
In regard to those who votes he did not get. Additionally his pledge to listen to everyone - especially when there is disagreement - is the difference between what Bush/McCain were offering.
A great day for the country.

edit, oh your not American heh, to lazy to rewrite my post or check the rest of this thread to see if your joking or not... i've spent most of the night on a small forum with some people who honest to god voted for mccain and are really upset that Obama has won... still, the rest of you US types can read it, yup.
yes beacuse people being given hope by some one who may actually be intelligent is such a horrid thing... people being motivated to make there country better?
Hook, line and sinker. He looks and sounds like a President, that's enough for me!

I'm surprised folks glossed over court's post. Exactly this. Fuck the cynicism of people like Savok, I lived to see my country elect it's first African-American president. I have just cause for hope for the future.

Said that i'm happy the US has a president that can string a sentences together who is on the left? that i think it's all a huge risk but one worth taking rather than the inevitability of the other choice? That i think he has a lot to prove to live up to the way he can speech but it's nice to know he inspire hope in a way i don't think the US has really seen since JFK?

In all seriousness, I am so HAPPY that Barack Obama won!!!! I was overcome during his speech, and moved to tears for the first time in years. This truly is an historic moment, and I hope that change is coming, because this country and the world needs it so badly now.
When he was talking about One America, and included "gay and straight" in that description, I cried even harder. I'm so overjoyed that he is our new President of the United States of America. Hopefully I will once again be able to be proud of my country.

Most of that is illegal in some states (as it should be imo). As far as the guy yelling out your name and political affiliation, thats extremely questionable anywhere.
Don't most states have some kind of minimum distance you can campaign from a polling place? It probably varies state-to-state, but I can't see allowing that kind of thing to be a good idea.

Quite honestly, I am surprised by the amount of cynicism of your judgment, considering he mentioned the reasons why he believed them and also that he wasn't being vitriolic to anyone. I don't believe he was hit by any cult-like swaying, and I can say that a lot of what he mentioned was shared over here as well, from what I saw (I'm a Canadian and just came back from hanging out with some other college friends watching the coverage).
I can only assume you've already debated many times before about why you feel this way, and while I'd rather not be dragged into a large discussion about this, I can say that I believe he had good reasons saying what he thought, and that it wasn't motivated by any blind following; it would be wrong to assume so this quickly.
I share many of the same observations he had about what just happened tonight, and I can say I personally do feel much better about having seen the results. As a foreigner, is everything I've seen totally trashed by a shallow following just based on what everyone has said? Possibly, my perspective is totally different from someone else's who actually live in the country. That said, I would rather take someone at their word about the sources they took to come to that conclusion rather than make an incredible assumption of how they got to the reasoning in the first place. It's just so incredible to me that you feel he's following a sheep-like mentality already.

Yeah, I thought most did, but when they were talking about not wearing your McCain hat or Obama shirt to the polls, the list of states was actually fairly small. Some dude yelling out your name and affiliation can't be legal that I can see, no matter what state.

Obama's speech brought a tear to my eye. OK, several. It was wonderful. It's so wonderful to have a President-elect that not only was I old enough to vote for, but seems so much to fit the ideals I hold of that office.

And on MPR, they're saying Coleman with 42.1% 1,018,431 vs. Franken with 41.7% 1,008,547, 87% reporting.

I'm cynical because this is reality where everyone has an asshole and they always end up shitting on something.
So where did i say Obama was JFK or that being able to inspire hope means he will make a good President? oh that's right... i didn't... but don't let that get in the way of your overt pointless cynicism.
What i did say is that he can and dose inspire hope. this is a good thing and more than mccain could do. He is amazingly well spoken, educated and intelligent in a way that makes bush look like a kid. This is a good thing and more than mccain could do. He is left leaning with polices aimed at reversing the damage bush has done. This is a good thing (subjective maybe) and more than mccain would have done which would have been token at best and the same at worse.
Dose any of that mean he will make a grate President or do the right thing? no it dose not but frankly either they carried on down the road they where on... which i doubt even you can say was going well... or they could try a different road lead by some one who couldn't be more different than bush who has inspired his nation in a way that has not been seen in 40 years...
It's a risk, he won't be perfect, he will do things i dislike and disagree with but it's not hard to put a bet down that he'll do less of that than if mccain was in charge.
Now i'd like you to explain what exactly about his policies or the man him self means that we are all doomed? but even then, as i said on that other forum, if i'm going to get nuked at lest i'm going to get nuked for new exciting reasons based on godless hippy values rather than the fact monkey man mk2 had a heart attack at the wrong moment and left bush mk3 (the fembot) in charge.

I don't vote on a single issue, but obviously gay rights are very important to me. There are many other things that more liberal candidates and I agree on, so I always vote for that candidate. I became very opposed to McCain once he chose Palin, a women with whom I agree on very little. I'm hardly single issue.
