Anyone notice Amazons message about trying to cut down on Wrap Rage (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wrap_rage) ? I saw this earlier and then took out the trash and was astonished to see all the packaging "crap" that's wasted (I do recycle but it still adds up). I applaud this on both fronts. I would love to buy something from Microsoft that doesn't take the jaws of life to remove and be able to throw the rest in the recycle bin.

I know what you're talking about, but I also think I understand why a lot of it is done. I could be wrong, but a lot of that stuff seems to be there simply to keep thieves out. If it wasn't so hard to get into, chances are, it would have been gotten into at some point. That would likely agitate you more, and costs companies more money, than what's going on now.

Clam packaging? I hate that stuff. I've suffered a number of cuts and gashes from trying to pry apart those horrible plastic packages. Just give me stuff in a normal cardboard box.

I think they should just put everything in a can. You know like a soup can. So you can just open it with a can opener and be done with it. The metal is recyclable so that's not a problem. Easy storage, and labeling. The ol' soup can......the packaging of the future.

This idea wins. Canned PS3 please.

Blister packaging is the worst. It's incredibly hard to saw through, during which you might damage the product if you're not careful, or cut your wrists and bleed to death.

I find it terribly annoying, but it's cheap and manufacturers/retailers don't like people ripping them off, so...it's not going away.

The funniest thing is when you get a multi-sealed product, finally open it, and...the product isn't there (missing cd, or game, or the like). That's pretty sad; locked up really tight, but stolen BEFORE it was even locked up!

And then you have the funnest time explaining that the Booklet with the key was actually stolen.

Yup.

The worst part about trying to open those packages is when you slip and cut your self, or worse, the product your trying to pry out of that fucking death trap. I can't tell you how many scratched new gadgets and tiny scars I owe to them.

you know, the funny thing is..... because of this crazy packaging there are now products for consumers (http://www.asseenontv.com/prod-pages/openx.html) designed to remove this packaging.... which in turn thieves can use, which renders the whole frigging idea of mutant packaging useless in the first place:p

second the canned packaging idea

I love that one of the things they tell you can be opened with the "OpenX" you linked to is "VHS tapes". Because of all the things with shitty packaging, they're the worst offender? :)

The worst packaging I ever had was some headphones that were inside sealed plastic and then inside the the plastic they were partially enclosed in a really hardcore cardboard box. That was kind of crazy. Agreed on the can idea! Go get it done carnage!

Wasn't there some Senator or Congressman trying to get rid of this kind of packaging?

I'd love to see a stack of rectangular soup cans containing consoles. As long as they kept the corners slightly rounded it would work.

I hate blister/clamshell packaging with a passion.

I do love the irony though of packaging that requires the use of the product you're trying to free in order to free it. Last year I received a new set of Case tools for Christmas. While I was prepping everything for the return trip home I pull the set out of the cardboard box only to discover that a clear piece of heavy duty plastic was placed on top of the tools for display, and the plastic is being held in place on the tool chest by screws. Eight or so long ass screws. All I could think was, what the fuck were they expecting someone to do if this was their only set of tools?

I'm similarly annoyed by the packaging of scissors and knives.
