So...my PS3 stopped working a couple of weeks ago. In an odd way, it was a nice blessing as it helped me focus on schoolwork, and my grades show it. :)

But now the semester is nearly over, and I do miss gaming a bunch, especially the PS3 (it is my primary system and I've been systematically cutting back on my library bit by bit).

In any case, I want to fix this, but at Sony's $150 price-rate, just about an extra $100-150 can get me a used 60gb on Amazon (they aren't hard to find, really). I've seen other third party sites offer repairs for cheaper, but I don't trust them fully.

So I'm kinda battling on what to do here. I thought I'd post my situation and see what CoG thought. You see, my PS3 turns on just fine, but it won't read discs (any type...blu-ray, PS2, CDs, etc). I figure it's the lens, but I never been good at fixing things. I don't want to crack it open and mess it up even worse if it can be avoided. But I will do that if you guys think it is a feasible option. My warranty is dead anyway, so yea.

I'm pretty sure it's the disc-reader, as I've heard of other people having the same issue. Anyone know of quick fixes? Should I crack it open? Should I just go ahead and snag a different PS3 or trust a third party and repair it?

If it's just the drive that really shouldn't be that difficult to fix. I'd say either do it yourself or find a local repair shop that will do it for you for a reasonable price. You can find the drives on eBay easy enough.

I don't think I have any local options available to me. I'm considering cracking it open though when I get back from exams. Hell...warranty is dead, so no loss, right?
