Astranoir just said something that got me thinking. What did you want to be first? I figure most of these would either be different influenced by the media, or by their parents or someone you knew.
I wanted to be a mad scientist. I even had a book for portions that probably were probably just nasty drinks I never got around to trying. I thought one day I could actually Hulk out on potions and get crazy paid for doing crazy shit. :o
I wanted to be a a firefighter, and I am actually going that route. I plan on going to EMT school soon, then be an EMT for a few years before I sw3itch over to firefighter, if that job eventually bores me I'll become a jumper.

Wanted to be a writer for as long as I can remember, but here I am training for Engineering. I kinda want to do both now. Guess I'll do my writing in my off-time which I hope to get once I finish this degree.

According to my old school notebooks, I wanted to be an architect like Indiana Jones or a ghostbuster.

First I wanted to dig up dinosaur bones.
Then I wanted to be a cartoonist, which is kind of funny because I have very little artistic talent.
Then I thought I wanted to be a pharmacist.
Then I thought I wanted to be a medical researcher.
Now I apparently want to be a teacher, and I'm really happy with my decision!

When I was little it was archaeologist. Until about 14 it was game designer, and then I moved on to investigative/political journalist.
I've since gained a lot of sense. I want to be a movie star.

I wanted to be an astronaut.
Then a teacher (which I actually went to school for).
Now? Fuck if I know.
My mom has a book that chronicles my school years from pre-school through my Senior year of high school. At age four, I wrote down as my future career as "Ninja". I was focused on this for a solid two years (according to the book) until I started first grade where I then decided that i was best fitted to be a wrestler.
Now I do graphic design and my wife and I run a photography studio.

The very first thing I wanted was to be a forest ranger, unfortunately this was because one too many R.A. Salvatore books had given me the idea that forest rangers were like D&D style rangers. Then I wanted to be a veterinarian for a traveling circus. Now I'm hoping to go into veterinary medicine and work for a zoo or do wildlife rehab.... I also always vaguely dreamed of being a comic book artist

Just an alien. I wanted to pilot the ship. Come to think of it, I wanted to be a lone alien that traveled the universe in my own ship exploring different planets. I guess I kind of wanted to be like Indiana Jones too. Only greener.

When I was a wee lad, I wanted to be a superhero. I'd imagine all the different ways I might get my powers, like a truck of toxic waste knocking my car into an electric pole, I could find an alien power suit or maybe if I prayed to some forgotten God long enough, they'd grant me special powers. I'd make up names and draw costume designs in my notebooks.
All the drawing turned to drawing classes, which lead to a compulsive drawing habit, which I took in mind when I chose to get an Art degree. Now, if only that damned toxic waste truck would hurry the hell up.

When I was about 5, I wanted to be a comedian. Sometime after that (around 8 or 9, I believe), I decided that I wanted to be an author. Somewhere in high school I was inspired by my English teacher to take my language and literature knowledge and put it to good use as an English teacher. I went to college, got a degree, and taught high school English for one year. I hated it, quit, and went into the IT field. I'm now an IT project manager. :D
I'm still, writing, though. I doubt the comedian desire will ever pop up again, however.

Originally, I wanted to be an oceanographer; I had a serious thing for sharks when I was younger. Then, for a brief time (when X-Files was popular), I wanted to be a crypto-zoologist. After that, near the end of middle school/beginning of high school, I had a bit of a rough patch. And, in high school, I decided I wanted to become a journalist...which I actually did.
Now I’ve moved on to trying to be an author; I’ll let you know how that works out. ;)

I wanted to be a cartoonist when I was a child. Back in the early eighties there wasn't really computers around so I liked to draw. I would draw little comics and they were pretty funny. I even still have some and I look back at them and laugh. I was a pretty raunchy kid I guess, a lot of them were about sex and perverted stuff...lol.
I'm still kind of working towards that (not the perverted stuff), however, more toward the graphic design or computer animation side of it now.

I had a few ideas, but the one I spent the most time thinking about was invulnerability. I've always been accident prone, so I suspect I was a little obsessed with continuing to do the stupid stuff I loved, but to not be able to get hurt in the process. I found a cool origin story just the other day, I apparently called myself The Praetorian(I've always been a history dork). I also found a design where I had circular saws for hands. God knows how that was supposed to happen.

In my potion book I had stuff like spinach, sprite, vinegar and oj mixed with other cooking ingredients combined to give you super strength. My grasp on mad science and chemistry was a bit low in the beginning. I mean aside from the cool Dr. Horrible costume I didn't know how Mad Scientist did it.
Cue science camp. Science was not as cool as I was hoping. No super powers to be made there. Moved on.

For the longest fucking time I wanted to be a palentologist because I loved me some fucking dinosaurs. Then I grew up a little and realized I'd have to spend my days in the middle of nowhere on rocky hill faces chipping away at rocks without any electricity or running toilets within miles. That put that particular dream to sleep quite promptly.

I really wanted to be some kind of scientist or detective when I was a kid. I also loved to write, so I wanted to be a novelist. I was even published in the 4th grade - nothing too spectacular though. Later on I wanted to be a botanist, then a sociologist, and then back to writing. Now I have no clue, and I'm just sort of drifting along.
I also used to dream that I would have powers. More magical than superhero, and I would be admired or feared by all. I also wanted to be a vampire. I was big into the supernatural as a kid.

I'm pretty sure the first thing I wanted to be was an astronaut, and I'm also pretty sure that dream ended the day Challenger went kerblammo! I was deathly afraid of flying for years afterward and I have to suspect that's the reason why.
Then I started writing stories around the second grade, and by the fifth grade, I became totally and utterly convinced that I would become a novelist someday. I've done a goodly number of things in the years since, but I'm still fighting the good fight, and I'm still confident that I'll sell a manuscript someday.
Of course, it'd help if agents didn't take their sweet time reading partials.

Normally I wouldn't find it depressing but lately I've been literally depressed especially about a week ago I was feeling really quite shitty, so yeah.
OTHERWISE, when I was younger I always wanted to be a pilot, something I did while in high school was take flying lessons, I actually was quite close having a private pilots license but I've always had problems with following through on things for various reasons, at the time I felt there was no reason for it, just an expensive hobby. So the last time I've flown was back in 03, but there were a variety of reasons why I got hung up and now when I think about this, I get kind of depressed because It just branches off into an entire questioning of every decision I've ever made.

Then in high school I decided I wanted to design video games instead. I went to school for programming, thinking that a great track to start with, and then... Flunked the final course. Being a journalist wasn't that great. I started working for the local paper when I was in high school (not exactly a babe-netting job, but whatever), but soon tired of it. Depending on where you're at, you'll have so many editors every day will seem like the coversheet scene from Office Space.

At least that is what I would answer when people asked me then when I was about 10 I wanted to be an actor so I could play the ruler of the universe but then at the age of like 12 I found out there was this "director" bossing you around which was unbecoming of a ruler in my position. As a kid I wanted to be a baseball player. Made all star little league pretty often, so thought that's what I wanted to do. Till I landed on a team in which the coach's son played the same position I did. And even though in pre-season training I had a better batting and slugging average, as well as a stronger arm, I was told I would not be allowed to play. So I gave up on that one. =)
Next I wanted to either be an artist of some kind (preferrably video game graphic artist or movie graphics), or fly an Apache. Even went so far as to sign up for the military, and had a contract to do a stint as an MP before transferring to Arizona to learn more about the AH-64. When I was in for approximately.. 3 days? Magically all my paperwork changed to something else. I lost my signing bonus, and lost my college loan repayment. After trying for a few months to get it fixed before I graduated high school (and got shipped off to basic), I told them I was leaving, if my original signed documentation wasn't honored.
Then I wound up fixing people's computers on the side... lucked into a job doing it, and been doing that sort of thing in the 12 years since. I did actually get a Visual Communications associates degreen in there somewhere.

My mum says that when I was asked this question on my first day of school, I said, I wanted to be President.
Later on it was a veterinarian but I changed my mind real soon and wanted to be in the military, flying choppers like my father. That pretty much remained my secret dream until I was 16-17 but I had to let it go because they still didn't recruit women in combat arms of the military (the rule was changed 2 years too late for me).
I went ahead and graduated in Law this past September and I still don't really know what I want to do with my life. =/ I've considered a career with JAG but I don't want to tie myself down to one place, I want to see the rest of the world.

Postman (from reading Postman Pat, he had his own motorbike and a cool cat), Priest ; then flying fighter jets or helicopters. I'm a commercial pilot now which is nifty, but still want my own helicopter.
One day :).

It's amazing to see the similarities and differences in what people wanted to be. Also makes me wonder what percentage of people became any of those things. Certainly isn't easy to follow your dreams all the time....

I wanted to be a math teacher, and then a cellist in the Boston Pops, and then a geologist. At least I was original ;)
When I was in high school and people were asking me what I wanted to be, I stole my mom's answer- either a nun or a prostitute, whichever pays better.

I wanted to be a firetruck. I couldn't come to grips with the whole being used thing when I got older, so I wanted to be a firefighter.
Wound up doing stuff to let people make pretty (and not so pretty) pictures... go figure.

Nah... more of a passive enabler. I write Direct 3D drivers. And I think D3D is indirectly responsible for some of the most horrible images ever to be burned on to my retinas. It makes me feel dirty sometimes.
Though I considered going the grade school teacher route, too.

I wanted to be a paleontologist from about 5 to 20. Then I wanted to go into advertising, and now that I'm about to graduate with a marketing degree I want to be a writer. Awesome.

I loved paleontology when I was a kid. I had all these books on dinosaurs and memorized all the Latin names and different eras.
Next I wanted to be a journalist, for a gaming magazine or a newspaper. I was attracted by the role of the profession as a watchdog and social servant, and I loved the craft, the responsibility, and the ethics.
I worked at and wrote for school papers and got an internship with a city mag. I got really good at it but was disillusioned by how much back-braking work it takes just to get into a position where you can write and do what you want. For now I'm satisfied with blogging and freelancing.
Finally I got into history and now I want to be a writer and history professor. I'm taking time off to travel now, but then I want to go for the PhD. All the way baby!
Whatever I do, I want it to be something I love, something where I can look back and see that I've improved something in the world and in myself. That's why I've been so attracted to teaching and journalism. Money, you also might note, is not really important.

I always wanted to be in the Air Force.
When I tried to join, they told me to piss off.
So now I'm going to school (doing very poorly, this man needs to focus) to be a high school history teacher.
I'm pretty set on it.

I've got a sledge hammer and a baseball bat. Come on over and we'll get the initial broken bones out of the way. We should probably start with the pelvis and back since they take so long to heal. :D

I wanted to be a teacher, the kind of teacher changed a couple times. I wanted to be a third grade teacher because I hated my third grade teacher, and was convinced all third grade teachers were awful. I thought if I was a third grade teacher I would be much better.
Then I wanted to be an english teacher, then a elementary school teacher, and then I spent 8 hours in a classroom and decided teaching wasn't for me. I really enjoyed my psychology classes in college so I wanted to be a psychologist, until I found out I could do the same thing with a MSW as a PhD so I'm a social work major now.
I wanted to be a Veterinarian. Actually got through the pre-vet classes at WSU.
I soon realized that I loved pets too much to see hurt, diseased and suffering animals all day long. Then when we had our Old English Sheepdog put down, I realized that I couldn't be on the delivery end of that syringe.
It has never been the vet who delivered that particular needle to my animals, it has always been a vet tech.
That sounds awesome. When I went through a stage in elementary school where I wanted to be a botanist, I was dumb enough to grab random plants off the playground, grind them up together and eat them. WTF was I thinking? Luckily, neither my friends nor I were harmed by this (as far as I know).
I used to make mud pies and mud milkshakes and tell my brother they were chocolate and make him eat them. Also I would pick all the rotten vegetables out of the garden turn them into a salad and give them to neighbors. I was a pretty rotten little kid.

Teacher. That's what I planned for, was going to go to college for it, then my dad died and things got all sorts of turned upside down. Now I'm a systems administrator, but I'm teaching adjunct at the local tech college, with hopes of one day going full-time there.

At age 11-12, I decided I wanted to make video games.
I gave up on that dream in college, and now I make video games.
Life is good.

You've got issues man!
Knievel's nationally televised motorcycle jumps, including his 1974 attempt to jump Snake River Canyon at Twin Falls, Idaho, represent four of the twenty most-watched ABC's Wide World of Sports events to date. His achievements and failures, including his record 433 broken bones, earned him several entries in the Guinness Book of World Records.
You've got to start somewhere. I'm just trying to help!
This may sound slightly sad but for literally as long as I can remember I wanted to do something, anything, with computers. My second memory is deleting the exe for Minesweeper off of my parents computer (my first one is falling down a flight of stairs). Now I'm studying Computer Science and probably going to be starting a doctorate in October, but I've become a lot more interested in audio in the last few years. Fortunately I'm also on student radio so it all balances out.

It was a local Seattle show that had some great writing and a great cast.
