View Full Version : Hardware You Can't Get Into

Trying to fix my sister's bastarding printer. One of those headphone jacks fell into the top-loading paper tray somehow (many innocent looks from her, Jesus) and it's wedged in the gears. Not a problem, but I can't open the case to get at the innards.

Oh, how I despise hardware design where they encase the important bits that might go wrong in Rubik's cube layers of impenetrable plastic. I've taken out all the screws I can find, but I can't pry the back plate off. It's attached... somewhere. Apparently inside, where I cannot see? I've got like a 1 inch slot window to the gears and I can *see* the headphone jack wedged in there, but I can't get any purchase on it with the implements to hand. And this would be so bloody simple if I could just open the damn casing.

Seriously, I effing hate hardware that's not designed so you can easily see and more importantly get at the parts. Why do they do this?

Have you tried googling (or youtube) a take apart of the particular printer? There's a video of how to take apart all sorts of hardware. Or failing that, at least a photo walkthrough.

If yes, and it turned up nothing, yeah, that's sweaty balls.

I was just about to post this same thing, only the video instead (which is hard to come by).

Good question...you might want to shoot Steve Jobs an email and ask him. :p

why do theu do this? Call it "analog rights management". They want you, the consumers, to pay when you need something fixed. I assume its an HP printer, correct?

Hell, I'm willing to bet it's a relatively inexpensive inkjet. They don't want you to fix it, they want you to go buy a new one.

Half the time when I run out of Ink it's a serious consideration. I have a HP Multifunction printer with which the only reason I haven't replaced it is I wanted the networking capability, and I haven't found anything comparable/cheap with it. Of course, that was a year or so ago, I'm sure I can find one now with wireless that is higher resolution and isn't more than the $75 that a full ink replacement would cost me.
