View Full Version : Worse: PB in J jar or J in PB jar?

Bandango

So, what's worse? Getting jelly in the peanut butter jar or peanut butter in the jelly jar?

J Arcane
10-24-2010, 01:48 AM
Jelly can mold if it contaminates the PB jar.

PB however, will not negatively affect the lifespan of the jelly jar.

Additionally, the jelly jar is refrigerated, the PB jar is not.*

Therefore, it is worse that jelly contaminate the PB, than the converse.

*Unless certain heathen variants of high hippieness factor are employed

I hate both equally and go to great lengths to ensure no cross-contamination ever occurs.

Actually, that was my reason right there.

Years ago before she left my grandfather, my step grandmother in California always kept jam out of the fridge. Opened. My mother, being sane, bought our own jam and said 'uh, the kids don't like blackberry' as the excuse why. However, whenever we'd put it in the fridge, she would come, take it OUT and put it in the cupboard next to the most vile looking jar of blackberry jam I'd ever seen.

She did this is the point where my mom simply took the jam and hid it in our cooler and packed it with ice because she was YELLING at us how we were doing it wrong, and Jam belonged in the cupboard, not the fridge, like we'd insulted her Mexican heritage (she was Mexican, the rest of the family was not).

I've honestly wondered -- please don't laugh! -- you really don't eat peanut butter and jam sandwiches that often? I ask because I was once talking to a acquaintance of English extraction and she said "We don't really do peanut butter." I thought she meant her family's particular tastes. God I'm provincial.

Peanut butter and jam is awesome. Try it before you knock it.
Peanut butter and Fluff is also awesome, although it can be hard to get hold of Fluff over here.

And you people store jam in the fridge? I suppose I can see the reasoning, but I've always kept mine in the cupboard and it's never gone bad.

Edit: Peanut butter and banana! I can't believe I almost forgot that.

Yes. I eat weird stuff. Nothing will ever beat banana and cheese on toast. If God were real, it's what he'd eat for every meal.

Second kid is Coeliac (gluten intolerent). He has his own peanut butter and his own jam, for his corn and quinoa bread. We try to keep cross contamination at its minimum, but we're having issues with margarine.

Jelly in the peanut butter jar is definitely the worse. Jelly has to be refrigerated and peanut butter does not; then, get peanut butter in the jelly jar and nothing bad happens, but if you get jelly in the peanut butter jar you have to make space in the fridge for it or it spoils.

And have you ever tried to spread cold peanut butter? It ain't easy, sir.

I have jam, and I have peanut butter sometimes.

I've never had the urge to add them both into a sandwich together.

Maybe it's just one of those things, like I'll never understand how something figured out how to get milk. I mean who thought, "Hey, calfs like it, I bet that stuff tastes GREAT".

So no, I've never known someone to mix the two here. Eat both seperate, sure, together? Never.

Peanut butter has a tendency to not want to rub off on other non-solid substances. Kinda like how at McDonald's if you dip a fry (chip) into ketchup and then into sweet and sour sauce, none of the ketchup gets into the sweet and sour sauce.

Or maybe it was the other way around. I don't remember.

I just learned that I am a heathen, as I only buy natural, non-preservative filled peanut butter that requires refrigeration. Oh no. :p

I don't really think that either is a big deal, so I didn't vote. I also didn't realize that Bandango was a drinker until I found this thread.

Either way, I don't eat peanut butter and jelly very often.

TheKeck

I'd just get normal peanut butter while my wife wants the "all natural" stuff. She gets Skippy Natural which is all natural but doesn't need stirring or refrigerating. It's a good compromise I guess.

MagGnome

Seriously, the texture of that shit has to be the most revolting crap I've ever seen. I only use it for cooking. And even then, I use the fresh ground stuff from the bulk foods section.

What in the world is Adams? I've never heard of it. There are plenty of natural peanut butters that taste great. The one that my neighborhood co-op sells in bulk is pretty tasty.

Wait, peanut butter exists that you have to stir? I'm behind the times, man.

A lot of natural peanut butters come with the oil sitting on top, as they naturally separate. You have to stir the peanut butter before using it.

Costco has those. 2kg Cashew Butter jars. I never dared.

On a related subject, they stopped carrying Portobello mushrooms. At least the two of them near my place. I'll have to call the other two, but I suspect they will be out of them for winter. Dammit.

Peabutter. it's actually not bad, but thick as hell. We tried it because my son is allergic to peanuts and I was craving a substitute. You seriously cannot eat it on a sandwich without a huge glass of milk to wash it down. it's like the consistence of spackle.

But I'm a fan of Skippy. Tastes sweet but not sugary, and almost has a roasted after taste...fucking delicious.

Stir it once and then keep in in the fridge. It will set like that.

I can understand the hate.. Nothing short of Drano will wash it down. (or usually the "Grind your teeth"-lemonade by Sealtest will do.) It's perfect for recipes, though, as long as you keep it cold.

Mushrooms are grown indoors. They are not seasonal, although certain varieties are available fresh during certain times of the year, such as morels.

I really wish they'd make the jars a little big and leave some extra space at the top for stirring. I try to just buy the no-stir ones now, but sometimes those aren't available. I don't go through peanut butter that quickly these days, so overall it's not that big of a deal to me.

Well, he tested positive for all nuts (yes, I know peanuts and almonds aren't nuts) although no reaction to almonds. But just playing it safe until he's tested again to see if he's outgrown it like he has eggs.

And I agree...if they gave just a little more space at the top it wouldn't be a big deal.

My trick is to spin a knife instead of stirring it in a circle. Or, if they're handy, just use a pair of chopsticks. And it actually tastes like peanuts. Sweetened peanut butter just tastes like icing sugar to me now.

I'm assuming it's the same thing as Marshmallow Creme?

As for the whole grape/strawberry/blackcurrant/etc. debate, I buy a different kind of jam every time I visit the store. I know a lot of grocery stores only stock a couple of kinds (or at least they used to), but the co-ops I tend to shop at have a couple dozen or so varieties at any given time. The only ones I shy away from are mint and jalapeno. Ick!
