View Full Version : WTF Halloween Night?

I know I'm a little late, but I turned on the TV Halloween night (marriage and a two year old = no parties) thinking I'd at least be able to see some hoky horror movies... and nothing. Abso-fucking-lutely no marathons except for I think something on Chiller, which just makes sense. I think I watched the remake of House on Haunted Hill.

Sci-Fi, Spike, G4, all the ones you'd expect had nothing on, nor did any of the networks. What the hell!? There's about a dozen movies that would have been appropriate to put on, but oh, well.

On the other hand, I watched The Fifth Element yesterday for the upteenth time, and it's still awesome. :)

My boyfriend and I noticed this too. It was disappointing because we were expecting some fun marathon we could watch while handing out candy.

Did you get to hand out any? We had zero trick-or-treaters this year.

I'm afraid that my childhood tradition is dying...

I think about 10 groups of kids, adding up to over 30 kids came by. It was a lot of fun :)

USA didn't have their usual marathon?

Wasn't so bad up here...

We had a Saw marathon on one channel...a classic horror movie marathon on another...and an insane hockey game with HORRIFIC defense going on....

I don't think so. I think they were doing House, which doesn't seem Halloweeny, it just seems like their normal thing.

Fuse was playing Hellraiser, so I watched that. :D

I ended up watching Bravo's 100 Scariest Movie Moments. It was okay, but I really wish there'd been a decent marathon to watch.

I almost did that, but we ended up playing Scene It? instead... too bad it didn't have holiday Easter eggs that made all the questions about Halloween/scary movies!

My wife and I settled in and ended up watching The Monster Squad because it's awesome. We also had no trick or treaters and we're now left with the very difficult problem of figuring out what to do with all of this candy...

The show clued me in on a few movies I'd never heard of before, so that was a plus. I wished John Carpenter's The Thing were rated higher, though.

It would be truly excellent if Scene It had unlockable holiday modes. Are there any horror themed board games? That seems like something of an untapped market.

I so very rarely get to say this in an inoffensive way: Eat it.

This year, for some reason, we had a TRUCKLOAD of trick or treaters. I had to work a couple hours late, so I called my wife to let her know. In a couple minute phone call she got three groups of trick or treaters. We also (for once) purchased juuust enough candy so that there were only a few pieces left when the kids stopped coming.

To clarify, you were talking about the candy, yes? Eh, best not take any chances. Time to start mouth exercises.

Sci-Fi did have a 7 hour Ghost Hunters live episode, and the entire day was a mini-marathon.

As for trick-or-treaters, we had a grand total of 6. Two groups of 3, one group of pre-teen girls (one was the chick from Flashdance. not that she would have been worth going to jail for...) and the other was 3 really young boys (one was Batman, and he had a really squeaky voice. I was in hysterics once I closed the door). Par for the course on my neighborhood.

It was cool earlier in the day because I went to the local Red Cross to donate platelets. The staff did a costume contest. The front desk girl was a devil (and was showing off the cleavage). The two nurses helping me were a 1)Pirate (not slutty, thank god) and 2)a kitty cat, complete with tail hanging off her coat. There was also a somewhat slutty nurse (ironic, considering she's a Red Cross nurse), an iPod, two witches, a USDA Prime Beef chart (the guy drew the various cuts of meat on his lab coat, and smeared fake blood around, it was pretty funny in person), a pretty convincing Lucy and Ricky from I Love Lucy and a 1920's golfer. They also played a variety of Halloween music over the speakers, decorated the whole place, and had a TV set up with Nightmare Before Christmas. There was more Halloween spirit at this place than there had been the entire rest of the day.

Joey and I get premium channels (because we're obsessed with movies), and there were a bunch of scary movies on Starz and Encore (and even TCM). We didn't end up watching any of them because a friend was over who doesn't really care for the horror genre.

The Shining was on AE last night though, which is awesome, except that The Shining is one of those movies that shouldn't be bothered by commercial breaks.

G4 played Host, which is sort a Godzilla type movie. My guide menu on TimeWarner Cable gave it 3 stars, which is good. I taped it but didn't watch it.

I did watch Audition, though, but not on tv. I don't think it was scary, though it's always talked about. But I knew a bit about it going in, so that might have ruined the "shock".

I also have Eraserhead to watch, and I even grabbed Evil Dead 2. But yeah, the tube didn't have a great list of horror flicks to watch. Bravo had their top 100 scares of all time, though.

I know there are games like Arkham Horror, but it's pretty intense just to pick up and play. A fun game, though :)

If you wanted hokey, then you should have checked out Cartoon Network. They were having a Goosebumps marathon not stop for it seemed like a week. I will admit I tuned in a few times during the day. :D Ah, memories!

I actually just picked this up a few weeks ago. Haven't had time to sit down and play a round though so I mostly just stare at it and try to wrap my head around the rules.

The way I hear it, folks who wrap their heads around the rules tend to be driven to madness, and many are thenceforth prone to uncontrollably slipping through the fourth dimension. ;)

The Host and Audition are both great (but very different) movies! I love David Lynch, but I haven't seen Eraserhead yet. And I love Evil Dead 2.

What do you think of Eraserhead? I'd like to see it sometime.

Haha, or more likely they get "lost in time and space." It really is a lot of fun once you figure out the rules, but it's one of those games that, like Risk, takes a few hours to play. It can be especially hard for some people because it's a cooperative game, and you're playing to beat the game and not the other players. We had one guy who played with us, but he wanted to "beat everyone else" and wouldn't help anyone or share spells, items or any other benefits... He ended up dying in a fight, and the rest of us beat the game

AMC showed a bunch of Halloween movies back to back, in order. But it was in the middle of the day.

So I went and looked for a Halloween'ish movie at the video store. Big surprise, most of the the notables were checked out, even the old ones. So I rented Night Watch figuring "well...it's supposed to have vampires in it" and I'd heard of it but never seen it.

That movie was terrible, imo. I realize that they were going for a trilogy so not everything has to be explained in the first movie...but it was just so irritating. The effects were good for having a pretty modest budget, but the story was cliche as hell and none of the characters seemed like they had any development whatsoever. You spend the entire movie watching the main character fail at everything he attempts, and then it's over right before any kind of climax. *clap*

Is Day Watch any better or should I just forget about this series?

It's good. Easily a 4-star if you ask me.

The effects are better, but it makes even less sense and the plot holes are big enough to fit the whole red empire through. If the original did nothing for you, the sequel will do even less.

I can't even fathom how that would be possible. Seriously. :D

For example, in the first movie when they talk about the Gloom, and the one scene where it tries to take the kid? They never explain a damn thing about what the hell they're talking about. I guess you're just supposed to go "Ok...the Gloom is bad. The End."

My wife and I watched 28 Days Later. Wow! Pretty tense stuff. Followed that up with The Rocky Horror Picture Show since we're of that era. The Rocky Horror Show was still on stage when my brother and I went to GB back in '74. Posters all over the tube walls.

"I promised them women."
