Hi there little kitty, might you be 10.7? This "Back to the Mac" Apple event will be held October 20th.
I'm still on 10.5.8 on my Mac Pro, tried upgrading to Snow Leopard when it was released, just to realize things I really needed to have working weren't stable at all, so I went back to Leopard. My MacBook Pro is running SL though, with no issues at all. I hope there will be some interesting things happening in 10.7, 10.6 weren't that big of an upgrade from 10.5.

10.6 is more of just an update to tidy things up from 10.5 and lower. That's why it didn't have a full name and attached onto the previous update name. Also, it was only $30 where usually the OS is over $100. All my friends use Macs so we just buy the family packs and split it so it's always super cheap.
It will be interesting to see what is added for 10.7. I hope some really good iPad compatibility as my girlfriend is buying me one for Xmas this year.

The one thing I wish Apple would do is either continue the $29 OS price, or just make it free. It is in their developer interest to keep users up to date, and the real money is in hardware anyway.

The stats are shit, absolute shit. Hell, I purchased a netbook with an i3, dedicated GPU, 320G drive and 4 gigs of ram and better battery life ( 8+ hours, actual usage ) for under half that price. Anyone buying this as anything more than a fashion accessory are crazy.

No, Steve Jobs wants to tighten his grip on the desktop, emboldened by what he's gotten away with on iOS.
This is exactly what guys like me have been warning people about.
Who wants to take a pool on how long until Flash support disappears for Macs like so much 64-bit Photoshop?
And you can count on that digital signature locked CPU Intel has been working on finding its way into Apple machines soon enough.

A huge part of the Mac market share is open source developers. If Apple wants to piss them all off and lose that business then that's fine, but I really doubt that is the direction that Macs will end up in.

Not really blown away by Lion. Anything and everything related to Mac laptops will forever be priced entirely too high, so while the new Air is indeed sleek as all get out, I knew I wouldn't be getting one before it was even unveiled.

Ubuntu Software Center/Update Manager. Apple App Store. Android Market. Cydia. Rock app. These are just front ends. They all use apt, and so will Mac app store, because it just works. I use a lot of open-source software on linux too, and having a friendlier interface to install them hasn't made them any less accessible or usable. I also have a lot of fee iphone apps on my phone. Fact is, since this is on the Mac OS, somebody will find a way to add third-party repositories.
I hope MS comes out with something like this on Windows.

Not on Mac OSX. Adobe can develop Flash as long as they like for it, nobody can stop them.

I think Steve Jobs has made it abundantly clear he doesn't give a flying fuck who he pisses off.
Everything and everyone else are beneath consideration, only his "vision" matters.
And his "vision" is increasingly just whatever petty shit has put the burrs up his skirt this week.
I mean come on, he went to war with Adobe. Whose software has driven more Mac sales than anything else, and is the cornerstone of the graphics industry that is the Mac's bread and butter.

That wasn't what I was getting at. I meant that when I yum or apt-get I'm not hit with big ads and user reviews for packages I never heard about. It's all about the marketing. Apple's going to sell this to developers by using that aspect. Whether or not this is needed for the OSX is the real issue (I don't think it is).

I know I'm not going to change your mind, but he did go against Adobe by supporting the open-sourced alternative.

People are also forgetting the Internet Explorer effect here.
He's already got the App Store under his firm control, and once it's sitting right there on the dock, who's going to bother going to VersionTracker or Sourceforge or any of the other download sites? App Store's already there, has a button and everything, you just click it, and are whisked away to Apple's rigidly controlled playground, where you only see what Jobs wants you to see.
And you know that effect is only going to extend to the apps themselves. The whole "no duplication of features/apps" thing is already in place, so don't expect Camino or Firefox, or OpenOffice, or anything else that might compete with Cupertino's own.
And then, once that's been in place for long enough, introducing a digital signature lock would be trivial. Most won't even notice. We will, but we're nerds, we give a shit about that kind of thing.
Everyone else? Like you said, they just want the quickest route to their fart apps.
But even if you're right, and Jobs never goes so far as requiring signed software on OS X, does he really need to? Once the monopoly is established every developer out there is going to have to get on board, or take a major loss in sales.
Much as I love Android, try making any money selling an app outside the Market, see how well that works for you. Even the porn alternate market doesn't get much attention.

OS X has had an apt-like tool for a while now as well: MacPorts (as well as one other "competitor" whose name I can't remember)
So what?
This will be great for all the startups who want to get their app out there quickly and without having to deal with all the problems of setting up a storefront. Sure, there are a lot of rules, but so what? Apple has made progress away from blind draconian rage (although the journey is obviously not finished). Besides, the Mac isn't the walled garden the iPhone is; developers are free to post all of their apps in any other location or format they want. The Mac isn't going to get locked down anytime soon, because too much of their market share uses open source apps, or those that otherwise don't lend themselves to a storefront (such as command-line tools, semi-obscure scientific apps, and heck, custom-developed tools).
This will simply provide a boutique store to showcase apps that follow Apple's prescribed aesthetics, and that otherwise might not have made it off the ground due to being too small. It also makes it easier for people to switch and have a single place to go to find good, if not the best, apps for a given task.
Banacek
10-21-2010, 11:53 AM
I have to be honest; I really hate MacPorts. Most of the packages are outdated and it comes with an incredible amount of bloat seeing that is only checks for dependencies in it's own packages and not on the system (no, I don't need another copy of Python and Perl, thank you). It's a great idea, I just wish it was better.

I got it from here (http://developer.apple.com/library/mac/#releasenotes/Java/JavaSnowLeopardUpdate3LeopardUpdate8RN/NewandNoteworthy/NewandNoteworthy.html#/apple_ref/doc/uid/TP40010380-CH4-DontLinkElementID_2).
As of the release of Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 3, the version of Java that is ported by Apple, and that ships with Mac OS X, is deprecated.
This means that the Apple-produced runtime will not be maintained at the same level, and may be removed from future versions of Mac OS X. The Java runtime shipping in Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, and Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, will continue to be supported and maintained through the standard support cycles of those products.
Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but I've been burned by Apple and Java once too much.
Edit: And to answer your question: I fear they are removing the platform (atleast removing their support, i.e. the port which includes the cocoa support).

Anyway good news all around. The App store will be a big boon for independent developers, and it isn't mandatory to distribute that way (which would never.ever.fly.) so I fail to see how this is in any way a bad thing.
As for Java... I don't see that as bad news considering the complaints about Apple's speed to update their JVM. Just means more effort will go into maintaining other JVMs on the OS, and for most of Apple's users Java is not exactly important. Mac = Cocoa, Ruby, Python, for the most part. If you try to get me to run a Java-based GUI I will stab you in the eye, but again, the open source market will pick up the slack and probably do a better job keeping it up to date and secure anyway.

I've never understood what people have against the syntax. Instead of bunches of parens, you have bunches of brackets. Instead of parameter lists with no context, you have named parameters, that you can easily span across lines if you feel the need to. Am I missing something?
