View Full Version : Show Note: Live Radio Broadcasts To End 11/17

Our Monday night broadcasts, as most of you know, are done from an actual AM radio station. We work for free. None of us get paid for this and that goes for the station we broadcast from as well. Our show pulls in no revenue for that station nor does it do so for any of us. Not even me and I work at the place full time. But that time doesn't cover our time on the air as In-Game Chat.
As explained at the end of this past Monday's episode (http://www.colonyofgamers.com/cogforums/showthread.php?t=1794), our time slot on the radio station has been bought by a basketball program. Their shows happen to run during the exact same time slot as our show. It's really the luck of the draw, honestly. Or lack of luck, I suppose.
Beginning on November 17th, we'll no longer be doing the show live on the air. That's about the only thing that changes, really. We'll still be doing a show on Monday nights, but no longer on-air and no longer from that studio.
This will be going on all the way through mid-March of next year.

Thanks for the update. I don't listen to the live show very often, but it was nice way to escape from the feeling of yet another Monday. I'll be fine listening to the recorded version, until basketball season ends.

Any plans for re-enabling the call ins? (Or does the other studios still have a phone setup for that?)

The other studio has it, but we're unable to screen the calls. So, there's a chance of taking a "country call-in" during the middle of the show. While hilarious...it isn't something we want to do. We'll have to figure out something.

Awww. Why don't you set up some sort of shoutcast server? You can do live "internet radio". So it wouldn't really be a radio station, but it would act like one.
Actually, that'd be sort of cool to set up a small internet radio server dedicated to CoG filled with gaming music and the sort. Then whenever we could do hourly news broadcasts on it (and it could air the Podcast live on Mondays). Hmm... I wouldn't mind working to set this up if there was interest. Would there be?

this is something i've looked at a few times. There is a lot to be said for having a mixer and studio quality mics in front of you while you record. Even though the equipment at the studio is old and wacky, it is much better and more consistant than five people plugging mics in a laptop

True, but between my regular sized mic and my creative X-fi plat which gives me a port to plug it into my computer with, that wouldn't be a problem.
Of course, that's me, and not the people doing the show. But you'll still be doing it anyways, not live, will that be in a studio or will it be off the computer?

As proven by the after-PAX show, you can throw together a set up that works... just sayin'.

Thats disappointing to hear, but I also don't listen live. I sync up with my ipod once a week. I love the radio show and I think its brilliant. Wish I could be apart of it someday.

You've probably already checked this out, but there are a lot of equipment that give the same quality of sound that can be recorded at home. If you look at Major Nelson's equipment, he deals mostly with his laptop, a mixamp, and a couple of mics that have XLR outputs.
Here's the link to Major Nelson's article:

Have you priced his setup? it is not cheap, by any means. great quality, though. He knows how to pick good equipment. one of the main issues is taking callers. his solution costs $500. Skype doesn't work effectively (as he noted).
Getting quality, live audio for 5 people plus phone capability is not an easy task. Or, more accurately, not a cheap one. since we already have a place to do the show off air, no need to spend the money i don't have on fancy audio equipment :)
Well I use a Delta 1010LT card which works fine with Skype (as long as you fiddle a little with the settings of the card). Sure it only has two direct XLR inputs, but it works fine. However $500 probably isn't far off for a card, mics, desk etc... If I had anything going spare (which happens from time to time) I'd be happy to donate it, but I don't right now. If you guys have laptops though Skype is probably doable with a very cheap USB interface (or possibly even built in sound). I mean do you guys record to a laptop, or a portable studio?
