Ok, so I've been a freelance graphic designer for a few years now and I've always been interested in getting a drawing tablet, but I've always been too broke to do so. So anyway, I've just been offered a 4x6 Intuos that is pretty much brand new for a good $50-60 less than brand new.

My concerns deal are mostly that a 4x6 doesn't feel all that big. Is it still a great tool at that size?

Also, if you've had experience with these tablets at all, your thoughts would be appreciated.

Well, for the comic (http://www.playitreviewit.com/dipswitch), I use a WACOM of the same dimensions. The pressure sensitivity takes getting used to, but once you do get used to it, creating things is easy. My suggestion would be if you're doing line art, getting any WACOM tablet and Illustrator is a good idea.

Personally, for Dipswitch I use Illustrator for the line art over the pencil sketches, and Photoshop for coloring.

Thumbs up for the Intuos (make sure you get the pressure sensitive stylus, though).

In a word: Yes.

I'm currently using an ancient 6x8 Graphire which is only a smidgen larger. The 4x6 won't be particularly big, but it's an invaluable tool never-the-less, and there are some distinct benefits to the smaller size. For instance, if you're generally short on desk space, a 4x6 is probably a better choice for you than some of the monsters Wacom makes.

I tend to draw and write fairly small, so I might be a bit biased, but if you've got a good deal on a 4x6, I'd say jump on it. If you decide you like it but need more space, you can always pick up a larger model later. OTOH, if you find that using a tablet isn't really doing it for you, you haven't wasted much cash on the experiment.

I bought mine for $70, and it is a neat little guy.

Since this is semi-ontopic, does anyone have any experience with the cheaper Wacom products, like the Bamboo?

The Intuos 3 is a great tablet. The A5 size (which is the one you're describing I think) is the one I have and it's ideal. The A4 has often been described as too big in reviews.

I was just on Wacom's website and thinking the same thing. I want to get one of the Intuos, but they're out of my price range for the time being. I was thinking of picking up a Bamboo in the interim, but I don't know if it's worth it.

I had a 12x18 intuos2 that I got cheap at a sale... Yes it's possible to have too large a tablet even if there's desk space to accomodate it. Sold it and got a 6x8 intuos3. Much more rational and portable.
