The avatars are ok, but they are a little stiff. Frankly I don't care for them much, maybe if you could DO something with them. Their mouths don't even move when you talk in party chat - lameo.

I think the style is quite sleek, sans avatars, and the avatars don't bug me as much as they seem to bug most people, so I guess that's what makes it hot to me. I really liked it when iTunes put in the rotating album artwork viewer, and this is essentially the same thing from my point of view.

I don't know if it's "hot" or not, but I can see the point. When you get involved in Avatar creation, you are taking more of an ownership in the 360 "experience". They don't want you to just pop a game in, play, and stop. They want you to think of the 360 as a more well-rounded event, with those game shows, "parties", etc. The more you are involved, the more you'll support them via purchases and it will create stronger brand loyalty/sympathy.

Even without the Avatars, it works for me. I have much more mental "investment" in my 360. If they came out with a Blu-ray attachment, the PS3 would go right back to Gamestop (or probably Craigslist).

As it is, I really don't mind the avatars, but it would make them so much better if they gave them 'real' eyes. Something like cartoony Pixar eyes would fit right in and comparisons to Miis would be harder to draw. Maybe in an update.
