View Full Version : Get the New Dashboard Early

There's a leaked install for the new X360 Dashboard on Platform Nation (http://www.platformnation.com/2008/10/31/play-with-the-new-xbox-experience-now/) for anyone that doesn't want to wait another 2 1/2 weeks. Unfortunately, instaling it early will disconnect your system from Live or any online activity till the actual update, and there's also a possibility of being banned.

To be perfectly honest, since I'm not connected to Live and would really, really like to be able to install games right now I'm considering it, but the looming threat of permaban is making me keep my distance. Wait, am I allowed to post something like this? It's not a mod or leaked game or anything, so I hope I'm not breaking any rules.

Oh man... decisions.

I don't play online that often... but I do enjoy XBL and my gamerscore, I don't think it's worth the risk.

This has 'bad idea' written all over it. I think I can wait until the 19th.

I downloaded it, works fine. The HD game install is sweet. :)

They won't ban you I believe. When you signed up for the early demo they said if you put it on a memory card and took it to a friends to install then he would not be able to connect until it was released. I didn't see anything about banning in the warning and hopefully they would have mentioned it.

Edit: I'm going to try it after I download a few demos. I only have 2 weeks left on my gold account and I have a separate account for offline games so my gold account getting banned really won't matter.

Edit2: Actually, fuck it. You can't make avatars until Nov 19

I would like to install it but that would mean no MP Gears 2 for a week.

Well I'm weak, so I ended up installing it. Putting Fable 2 on the HDD now and so far everything looks and feels really good. The only things are, I can't figure out how to delete the games that have no points from my profile, and the background image I used on the old dashboard doesn't look good at all.

Is getting the NXE 2-3 weeks early a good enough reason to be banned from Live?

There's very little in life that I can't wait a few weeks for. Maybe oxygen...water...but the rest can wait. :)

Wow, so it disconnects you from live, huh? And you can't reconnect until the 19th?

No Gears for you, or CoD5, or....oh god! - the left 4 dead demo!

I doubt they would outright ban the console from Live, since in the email to the real recipients of the preview it says if you update a friend's box by "accident" with your HDD or MU they won't be able to connect to Live. Also, Major Nelson made a twitter post about it saying you can't connect to Live should you get your hands on the update early, but nothing about a banning. However, there are certainly no guarantees.

As I understand it, the system checks for registered IDs when you sign on, and if you're not registered, you can't log on till the 19th.

Just so you know, a lot of MS folks are pissed about this. It's putting undo stress on the NXE servers that aren't ready yet.

My advice, avoid it. It's only 2 more weeks.

Yes, we wouldn't want to piss off our Gaming Overlords. As the saying goes, the corporation is always right.

I'm not advocating people download this, but our collective attitude towards the companies that produce the products WE BUY often seems incredibly backwards to me. They are pissed off AT US? Oh no. I can hardly imagine having to worry about Hoover's attitude if I decided to modify my vacuum cleaner.

I'm not saying you're wrong, but what stress is this putting on the NXE servers? The download isn't from a Microsoft supported site, and you're not even allowed on live after it's been installed.

I waited nine months for each of my kids. Longer, if you count all my years of life prior to their births.

Wait, people...JUST WAIT! :)

Oh, and good points above about the servers; if you're not online, and not getting it from MS, it seems there's no stress for them...at least on the surface, it would appear to be stress-less.

Have you ever been part of the upbringing of any child?

EDIT: Has anyone tried playing xvid/avi videos?? I may try it, but the 360 is my prime media machine, I don't want to screw that.

This isn't BUYING the update, it's stealing it to get it early :P

I think Hoover would be pissed off if you stole your vacuum cleaner, or maybe the bags for it would be a better analogy.

The NXE gets the bulk of it's content from servers. All the game box art, blade data, events, etc are all pulled from servers that technically aren't live or finished.

Of course, with that being said the dashboard is pretty incomplete then when you try to use it.

You want to take the chance of getting banned, go ahead. I'm not saying they are, or they aren't, I just know that some of the folks are Microsoft are pissed about this. They are already putting in tons of extra hours trying to get this free update out the door, and this is just adding to it.

Well, I keep reading that Avatars aren't given to you if you go this route...

It's tempting, but I'm going to wait the 2 weeks, especially since now that I read you'll be disconnected to Live once you update...

Plus, I'd rather have all the functionality worked out and have a seamless throughout, the day its released.

You go through the mini guide to achievements, goto your 0 point game and press x do delete history.

Don't install the stolen NXE if you value your media machine. All installed codecs are removed and you will need to dowbload the updates again, impossible if you are not connected to live.

My advice, to anyone, is wait a couple of weeks til the 19th.

Well, I disconnected my 360 from the network before updating, and everything installed just fine.
