So it's getting close to the holidays, and I assume most of us have to buy gifts for people. Honestly, most of our loved ones have it easy: geeks are usually some of the easiest people to buy for. But the other people - the grandmothers, uncles, parents, sisters in law, odd cousins, freaky co-workers - can be a lot tougher to buy for. That's where this dual purpose thread comes into play.

First, as a place to ask for help. Obviously we don't know the person you're buying for, but if you give a thumbnail sketch - age, gender, hobbies, 'type' - and a price range we can give it the old college try.

Second, if you find something interesting that you think others would like to give as a gift, post it.

First up is a recommendation. Outdoor solar lights (examples here (http://www.amazon.com/SpareHand-Set-Decorative-Hummingbird-Butterfly/dp/B001B011XI/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&s=garden&qid=1225494641&sr=1-12) and here (http://www.amazon.com/Solar-Powered-Floating-Light-Globe/dp/B000BC1D4O/ref=sr_1_25?ie=UTF8&s=garden&qid=1225494659&sr=1-25)). They charge during the day, and at night glow with a beautiful light. I've given my stepmother several of the basic globes, and she really loves them. They in particular work almost as well inside as out. Great for anyone who spends a lot of time in their backyard, patio or porch.

Nothing says love like cash.

I've been preaching this mantra since I was 10.

You don't love me, obviously :(

No way, nothing says love like something handmade :)

Counterfeit; it’s the best of both worlds.

True...but most of us can't make HANDMADE items. Thanks for making some of feel inadequate...again ;)

And geeks are not easy to buy for...Ms. Claus has a rant about that. Just ask her about a particular xmas...

Or DON'T... whatever I'll tell you. Our first Christmas together Santa gives me a list of video games that are coming out that he wants for Christmas. I go shopping on black Friday and I got like 10 of the game on his list. Not even a week after Christmas he takes them all to gamestop I was devastated and vowed to never buy him games again. I buy him some now but I'm pretty cautious about buying him games.

Edit: He says it was longer than a week but my bruised ego felt it was a pretty quick turnaround

Did he play them first?

Yes, but he didn't play through them he played them for short periods of time and decided he didn't like them. Which I would have understood if I randomly picked out games for him; but he gave me a list of games he wanted.

In general, I think giving food is often a nice gift for those you don't know what to get. Unless you know they have a dietary issue...there are plenty of nice food baskets ranging in price. Nothing says a great gift as something you can eat and enjoy. After that...gift cards...I think gift cards to places where someone shops or you think they do or will...tells the person you know them...
