I have the XBLA version of this but never actually played it :o
Since it's on sale on PSN is there any reason to have the PSN version over XBLA. Does one look better than the other or any other reason?

I know the 360 version has achievements, some of which are fun.
Nameless

Also, the achievements are do-able. It's still the only game that I have maxed out 200/200 points.
On the downside, the 360 d-pad isn't that great.

Is Chronicles worth $2.99?

I grabbed this on the psn so that I could play it on the psp. The game looks incredibly sharp on the small screen. Not sure if you have a psp.

If you have a PSP, you should get Dracula X Chronicles, since it has Dracula X and Symphony of the Night as an unlockable bonus, complete with redone localization.

Yeah, I have Dracula X Chronicles with SOTN unlocked so I guess no need to buy it again. I may pick up Chronicles for $2.99 if it's still on sale.

I concur. I have this but still got it on the PSN for whatever reason. I was surprised how great it looks on my 42" HDTV. That's pretty amazing for a PS1 game. But I do wish they had at least made it widescreen. The PSP version in Dracula X Chronicles lets you stretch it, but it looks bad.

I believe the psn version has full quality music over the xbla version.

Is the XBLA music so bad? Given, last time I played the PSX ver it was on a crappy 19" CRT that had gone through 6 cross-continent moves, but I didn't notice the music to be any different than I remembered.

Not really, but the graphics take too much of a blow for me. That's one game that could use a makeover. Or play it on a crt.

I believe the psn version has music from the cd whereas the xbla version does not. I never implied the xbla version was bad, only answered the op's question.

I don't believe there is any difference in music quality between the two versions. The real difference is in the 360's awful d-pad. I modded my d-pad, so I took the version with achievements and (broken, I later discovered) leaderboards.

I paid full price when it came out, and never regretted it. Played it through several times. My roommate at the time said, "You have other games! I've seen them!"

I'm going on memory here but I believe it was due to the Arcade size limit of yore that required SOTN to have compressed audio. Not saying that the common ear would catch a difference but I believe it to be a difference nonetheless.

Okay, thanks. I was wondering. And I must be the only person around who doesn't mind the D-pad on the 360 controller.

You must not have played the Bionic Commando arcade game. I remember screaming with rage because the little bastard would shoot the grapple straight ahead while trying to do the last base segment that had you going over a long spiked corridor (that they probably could have made taller if they wanted).

SOTN was the first game to bypass the size limit. And, if we're talking just compressed versus uncompressed, CD audio is only 44Hz. Uncompressed, perfect audio requires gigabytes. And the PS1 version didn't even use CDA; it used XA. And the PSN version certainly isn't 700MB.
Now, one more thing: the ending song "I Am the Wind" was taken out of the XBLA version, as well as the version in Dracula X Chronicles. I don't know if it's in the PSN version or not.

I see nothing wrong with trying to erase that song from everyone's memory. It was terrible.

Was I the only one left thinking
"Why does he want to buy a second copy of a game he already has but doesn't play?"
Yea? Ok, good. Please continue.

What kind of gamer are you to ask such a silly question?
Possible answers: Because it's shiny. Because I'm hoping to play it one day. Because it's another piece of a collection that matters only to me. Because I've got more money than sense. Etc.

Good question, because I haven't gotten to it yet but fully intend to. I want the best version and for $5 it wouldn't break the bank but I don't want to waste it if I don't need to.
I ended up not buying it since I see no compelling reason after the responses.

Well I did end up buying SCII and the CE of SCII within a week of each other.... guess I can't really comment. :(

Have I mentioned I have 4 copies of Phantasy Star 2 (on different platforms)? Some games you just keep on buying as a matter of course.

Same here. It can get embarrassing when I realize how many times I've rebought certain games on different platforms, and would possibly do again if there was enough incentive.

I own two copies of Half-Life 2, Portal and Team Fortress 2. I originally bought HL2 when it was released on PC, bought the Orange Box for my 360 while my PC was dead and have since bought TF2 and grabbed a free copy of Portal for the PC.

I own the US Playstation, Japanese Playstation, Japanese Saturn, and XBLA versions of SOTN. :p
I tend to be a bit compulsive of a collector with regards to certain things. Should see my Call of Cthulhu RPG collection...

I don't know what it is but I keep buying it. The last one being the recent Steam sale a few weeks back. Maybe it's the hours of potential gameplay that keeps me buying but ironically, I find it hard to break 10.

So is this the xbox remake SOTN released for the PSN or just the PS1 version released on the PSN? How do they compare graphically? I'de like to snag a copy but not if its just a straight up release (like FFVII).

The PSN version is a straight-up emulation of the PS1 disc. No graphic smoothing options, no widescreen border art, none of that.
