Dick move? yes.
Surprising though? Not at all.
He basically wrote all of you out of existence immediately following your departure. As if you had never even been there.
I really hope that isn't how he goes about his police work. But I have a feeling it is.
He's a "sad little king, of a sad little hill".

I'm sure he's butthurt. I logged in to see what the status of the Subscriber's forum was...10 threads, most of which have <10 replies.
The really hilarious observation though? That Evil was talking about how wrong the "EA is banning people" in relation to having a Spore acct fiasco was, saying it was a dick move by them to ban people so easily.
Let me reiterate...Evil...said they were wrong to ban people for such trivial offenses.
Let that sink in.

To anyone offering to go back there and start trouble: don't. The best thing you can do is simply delete that site from your bookmarks and encourage anyone else you know to do the same. By going over there to start trouble you're still giving him page views. The old adage is true in this case: the best revenge is living well.

Don't let it get to you. For the past 3 weeks it seems like any new thread over there, even front page stuff, has struggled to break 20 posts.
I'm not implying that I or you want EvAv to fail but you can't help notice that things have taken a serious downturn over there...his reaction isn't that surprising in that context. It's still a dick move, but not surprising.

It's too bad that it had to come to this, but I can't say I'm surprised. Bap and Fitty getting perma-banned from there is a perfect summarization of why all of this went down in the first place. Let Evil go home with his ball; we have a much better ball here to play with.

Ha ha ha ha! The EvAv page was deleted because the site isnt notable! Thats hilarious!
Also, read this choice quote on the motivation for deletion:
Still non-notable. Does not meet WP:WEB. Has no alexa ranking, and only 11 forum members.
11 forum members?
Also, another one:
Delete - It is clear to me that the site's management are not interested in allowing an unbiased reporting of the facts, and given the difficulty of verifying sources and the level of notability of the site, the amount of effort required to outpace their managements attempts to whitewash the article should it be allowed to continue are too much to be worth it
Note that they also want to delete the CoG page, because it was formed after an internal schism 2 months ago. 2 months ago is an eternity in internet time!

Plot Summary: Evil made the claim to run most modern games (notably Crysis) on a computer that doesn't cost a bazillion dollars you need a "Magic PC". It caught on quickly and Evil was not pleased. Banning and drama ensued.

I've been getting e-mails notifying me of giveaways, too. But it's weird because most of the time they go to my old e-mail address, but the other day, I got one to my regular e-mail. I'm thinking they were going to my old addy because I might have the alt account "rini" that I never used linked to it. But then that makes me wonder why I wasn't getting them sent to my Gmail for my regular account.

Once the first exodus started at EvAv I just went and checked it out once a day or so and thats it.. shortly thereafter it became flooded with RSS feed posts. I hadn't been th evav in over a month, just went and hit the new post button and of 20 pages of new posts, I'd say at like 7-9 of them were probably RSS feed postings.

Well, this ha been one beautiful little internet drama to unfold. I've never really seen a schism of this magnitude before and of course with serious business internet drama there's lots of hurt emotions and revenge-glee :P Not to mention we're all gamers and often have a must-win attidude (nothing wrong with that :P ). I figure for some this is a train wreck that must be rubber-necked.

I didn't after the magic PC fiasco. I really hoped that that Evil would come to his senses at the time. Now? I mostly want him to stop lying to people, especially when he's taking money from them.

Is it just me, or do some people here seem to be taking an obscene amount of glee from that site's potential downfall? I'm sure they have their reasons, but, really, it seems kind of sick...Well, the reason most people are upset is because they feel cheated by Evil with his "donation drives" that were supposedly to keep the site alive, but most likely were just a supplemental source of income for his personal use. Evil bans any discussion of the topic, so he can still attempt to get donations for people who don't know what went down.

I like the site. I just don't like the guy running it. So, maybe there's glee from HIS potential downfall. But even then, I'm not looking at that.
I get my glee from knowing that he had no power over us. I get my glee from him coming to this site and seeing that he had no power. And seeing that the entire time...it really WAS the community that made that site what it was.

I'm taking no solace from the effect this has had (is having still?) on the EvAv community. This whole thing could have been easily avoided. How? With respect and honesty from both parties involved. Sadly only one party was willing to even discuss matters.

Glee? Not quite, but as a person who put money into the 3 figures into the site (as several of us here did over the years), only to find out that it was (maybe) not going where I was told it was, I don't feel bad, either.
Well, I feel bad the community had to be fractured but we came out Ok over here. It's more a sense of comeuppance than glee.

May I suggest that we end this thread? Let us make discussion of that other place offensive and the name an obscenity. We are CoG, a gaming community, not the bitter remnants of some other place. Dwelling on the actions of one man do us no good.

The only animosity is on his end. We saw a situation, asked for it to be rectified, and were more or less told to go to hell. So we - the people responsible for 90% of his content - left and started a better site, end of story. I know that none of us wanted to leave the site, but he left us no real choice. I think I speak for the other founders when I say that EvAv doesn't even pop into my head anymore.

having been someone banned from a gaming community because i disagree with fundraisers in general...I feel for you people. I volenteered for an EA/CoG-type site for a couple of years, but I got a perma-ban once I started complaining about donation drives to "keep the site alive". So, I joined up over there...and most recently followed suit in joining up over here. I keep track of both though because neither site is consistently busy.

With the site in question that I was banned from I gave my time. And when i was banned, it really soured me on giving money to community sites. And when you consider what was/is happening with EA, it further solidifies my point that my money is better off held where it's at.
I would only consider donating money if there was a way to directly pay for hosting fees (w/out the middle man). Since I'm working full time, it's impossible to give time. Although, I would offer that again should the ability to do so came about.

Before I made my last post in this thread I was still orange and I am now a yellow. I don't know if that means a banning is imminent or not but I find it funny either way.
As far as taking pleasure on the fall of EvAv, you're damn right I do! The community is no longer there so the only thing holding it together is the man and I personally love watching dishonest and cowardly men fall, on the internet and in real life, especially dishonest and cowardly men who think they can control whomever and whatever they please to suit there own ends with no consideration for any one else. If that makes me sick then so be it.

I have to agree completely. Any money I gave back then was purely for the greater of the community. All things said and done, here we all are now. The money I donated I don't feel bad about losing because in the end, I was the one who decided to send it. I was never forced. Others may have been fooled into donating excessive amounts which they are now regretful for but I made sure not to fall into that position when the time to give came.
I still stand strongly by the fact that if we all truly decided to leave EvAv, that is precisely what we should do. Not just where we post but even where any interests lie. If this gripe continues to grow and legal action starts to be taken, understand that this community could be potentially hurt from any kind of backlash.
All I ask is that you all think for a minute what you truly hope to resolve through continuing this grudge and what could potentially be compromised. Know also that if the right thing turns out to be a face to face with the barrel, I'll be there. Only that now is the time for logical decision making.

I'll admit that I openly mocked the Magic PC exodus to their faces. (In that lovingly, "Oh whatever, you guys will be back, buncha big babies" kinda way.) I've long held the position that until The Penguin and Bootsy left, it'd still be the place I'd call my digital home.
I kinda feel bad now, so, to that inital group of PIRI settlers, sorry guys!
/edit: And if we're not going to have a donation button, I'm okay with that... But we should do monthly fund raisers or something. Say, the final seven days of any month we pick something and raise money for it.
/edit2: Of course, I almost feel guilty suggesting that, given the fact that I have no spare money to donate.

I've said this myself. I wouldn't care as much if he hadn't been lying about where the money went. There's a word (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/fraud) for taking money from people under false pretense.

Same here. I even donated to subscribe other people a few times, but I don't feel bad about it. The people I subscribed were fairly new and it was my way of telling them that they were welcome in the community. While I'm upset about being lied to about where that money was going, my ultimate motivation in doing so was still fulfilled.

Meh, my last post over there was probably a few minutes before I found out about CoG. I didn't even do a Goodbye post, as there was no one to say goodbye to; everyone worth talking to came here, almost instantly. No reason to care about being banned, IMO.
Here's the issue I have with just leaving it in the past. Then what will stop it from happening again? Perhaps if the people who split to form Gamers with Jobs hadn't just left it in the past they could have helped prevent Evil from scamming the rest of us. Shouldn't we try to prevent it from happening again?
Not sure if it's really a good idea, or practical, but I think it's at least worth considering.

Evav had served me very well over the years, it allowed me to conduct the best play-by-post campaign I've ever had and it had filled my 360 friends list to a level that had warranted its purchase.
But now I'm essentially being forced to pick a side, based on little to no information. I'm sure Evil would have a counter-argument to all this but he hasn't expressed this so a lot of us are all in the dark. I'll go where the people go, I think Evil is overreacting, but I really do need more information in general to support one side or the other.

Honestly, I think the silence speaks volumes. The totalitarian attitude and nonchalant banning of everyone on a different site made this an easy decision to me. Combined with the fact that no one man should have such control over our community, I don't know what you are waiting for.
Though, if you truly want to be a part of both groups, I suggest you do not ask about any of your concerns on the other site, less you too be banned.

I've heard that the site's been spamming members with alerts on giveaways, etc. I've also heard that those who donated previously, and who still frequent EvAv, have been receiving emails from Evil begging for more money to help with "hosting costs."I haven't received any about hosting costs but I was surprised to see the giveaway notice the other day.
I have about 2-3 old threads from EvAv that I receive the odd e-mail from and I think I post about once or twice a week on the weekend gamer/monday blues threads, but that's about it. The level of discourse over there has suffered immensely and it just feels like Generic Game Forum X. The special something that made EvAv special (aka the community and the fact that we can string a basic sentence together) is pretty much absent now. I've pretty much severed my ties with the site now.
I was surprised earlier in the week (or was it last week?) when I was looking at the member list and saw that Fitty and Bap were both missing from the lists. That was when I finally took it off my start tabs for Firefox.
Sigh.

Well sure, but its not like both sides are withholding info, only one.
Typically when that happens in the world its because of: A) Legal action or B) the silent party's position isn't tenable.
Theres no legal action going on that I'm aware of and Phil has gone beyond simply being silent to crushing any discussion of whats going on. I mean if he just kept quiet and didn't say anything it would be one thing. Actively banning everyone involved or even asks whats going on speaks to what happened more than anything he could have said to me.

I had it coming. I was never upset with you about it...I was pushing for an "intervention" really...to be forced into a break. I feel really, really badly for how things worked out for yourself, bapenguin, and a number of other heavy contributors over there who have become founders/contributors here. It's just really such an unfortunate situation.
You guys let me know if you ever want me to pack my baggies and I'll move along. I know some aren't excited I'm around. Hell, I thought about a poll, and then thought that would be too narcissistic. Let me know if you want me off the island, however. There's a reason I'm registered here and not PiRi...lack of political/religious content here as compared to there. :)

Really classy, Phil. Really classy.
Somehow I've gone from "honored guest" to pariah.
I'd commented to a friend of mine, probably about a year back, that Phil seemed like a total douchebag, and it was only people like you, Scott and the other IGC guys, and well, most everyone who's come over here, that kept me visiting EvAv at all.
I wasn't massively surprised when the split happened, and mostly guessed why, and was more than happy to come over here, never to look back. I'm far happier visiting this site, where it all seemsjovial and communal.
I'd be happy with the ban if I were you. I did go back briefly to see if I could shut down my account there, but couldn't find a way, though I guess forming forty threads titled 'Phil's a complete tool' would do the trick. But I'm lazy.
It is amazing how pathetically two faced and assholish he manages to be though. Does it take effort to be that petty all the time?
And Johan, I may not count for shit here, and may have had the odd disagreement with you in those past days, but it's all hugs and joy here! I smiled to see you were here when I saw your first post.

Dude, that is exactly what all of my ex's say about me. :D
I'm not big on trashing the old site since it didn't directly involve me but what an ass move on Evil's part. To ban you guys is incredibly childish and immature. I'm sure the success of COG surprised Evil but that is no excuse to ban the people that poured their hearts and souls into building his site over the last 5 years.
I'm glad the COG network has taken off the way it has. It's great to have a refuge available for all of us misplaced inter-nerds. I can't imagine how much it would have sucked if you guys had left Evil Avatar and not given us a place to go. Thanks.

Not for me. I mean, I still feel for the community I left behind. In many ways it was like leaving home or being evicted by a greedy and unreasonable landlord.
Out of the people left at EvAv, I'm betting a decent percentage of them have no idea of what happened.
I had no idea what the situation was regarding the exodus, but a poster from here contacted me and gave me the lowdown. It's amazing to think that so much had gone down and the semi-regulars like myself had no idea of the gravity of the situation.
I sort've thought that I would stick with EvAv for a while and visit places like this on the side, but to be honest the community is what wins out and at this stage, EvAv has no community.

I've heard that the site's been spamming members with alerts on giveaways, etc. I've also heard that those who donated previously, and who still frequent EvAv, have been receiving emails from Evil begging for more money to help with "hosting costs."
He's been spamming me to the extent I've just told Hotmail to dump everything from that site into the Junk folder.
I never donated (some kind, insane soul kept sponsoring me), I did think about it for a time, but I never felt right giving Evil money, and with the sea of orange around me I figured he had plenty. Then he pulled some shit that made sure I'd never donate, then he pulled some shit that had me leaving the site for a year (only coming back to gloat over how useless Kevin Rudd is to the now missing Australians) and within a few months we had the PIRI split.
Must say, I am enjoying this feeling of vindication for the years of my hatred.

It's funny, bap, fits and Doc Finger all have 10 or less posts, but you can still find all their posts by clicking on their profile and doing the "find all posts" option.
Now this gives me a reason to ask for my money back (a whole $10) and for all my posts to be scrubbed entirely. I hope my info also gets scrubbed from the Live leaderboard and the PSN ID lists, because I don't want my information just out for anyone to find without me having any kind of contact with who would be adding me.

Which of course is precisely why so many of us were willing to follow you guys here at the drop of a hat, when you made it known that you were breaking away. The IGC crew and posters like bap and fits were absolutely the reasons I spent so much time on EvAv, both in reading the news and in posting in the forums. In fact, while I was aware of the site, I didn't start visiting it regularly until after I had found then-EvAv Radio and started listening.
Of course, after getting to know the community that had grown up around the place, it was a little heartbreaking to see so many of its pillars pick up and leave at the same time - and was obviously various levels of heartbreaking for all of you to do so as well. Fits and bap were very clearly choked up about it, and rightfully so. It's a sad thing that Evil managed to drive away something so truly special that had grown in his care (though perhaps not through his actions, and which, it seems, he did not deserve).
Out of the people left at EvAv, I'm betting a decent percentage of them have no idea of what happened.
I don't know, maybe, depending on how often they check the site. The big departures were front-page news, at least until Evil took them off the front page. Which was, perhaps, the biggest dick move of all in my opinion, and the clearest sign to me that he really didn't understand - or maybe didn't care - what was happening there, and how quickly.

But if we don't bring it up in order to learn from it, then we will repeat the same mistakes the Romans made, so to speak. If we brush it under the carpet/bed/garbage/etc, then how can we take action to betterment ourselves and make this a better thing that wont happen again?
No, it's best to keep this fresh and focus on the solution keeping the problem close in mind in the process.

I can assure you that many have absolutely no clue as to the happenings-on. For me I beileve I had a good indication of what happened from snipets from this thread and from good ol' Keck and clark but really the whole idea of this new forum is lost on me.
If you really want to know, just read this thread (http://www.colonyofgamers.com/cogforums/showthread.php?t=264) -- every post. It's long, but definitely worth it, and you'll more than understand what's gone on by the time you reach the end.

I read this thread early this morning before I went to work(where I'm posting from now) and that saddens me. Two people of which I doubt anyone would have a problem calling them a pillar of that community prior to retirement from the site.
I honestly haven't even bothered to visit that site since I regularly started to come here for information and the random post that i'll do(which by my post count isn't often obviously). I have noticed the give away emails sent to my registered email I normally use, which I found odd because I never in the years I was there remembered getting any before. C'est la vie. I agree with you entirely. I like people donating to the site. I also run adblock on Firefox so the alternative doesn't bother me.
It's a post saying "we're out of money so we're turning to the members to keep us afloat". Evil ran plenty of donation drives whether for yourself or sponsoring another member. Which is totally cool, except that's what's keeping the site afloat, not compelling content, the community or anything else besides donations. Coming to me looking for a donation actually pulled me away from donating.
I may be in a minority here, but I don't want to be "tapped" come bill paying time. I want to have a desire to give.

Meh, begging for donations is tacky. Toss a couple of banner ads/Google ads (non-popup), sell clothing/other items with CoG logos, but don't just ask for money. There are enough other ways to do it without acting like a pauper.

Would we care if it was? ;) Informal talk of how the donations will be handled has mentioned an accounting of where the money is used and how has been discussed in some older threads. I would think what the issue was over at EvAv and the result of that issue, there will be some kind of accountability of the money.
Personally...if they wanted to spend my money on booze and donuts...feel free. As long as the site stays around...enjoy :D

You are correct in that there are a large number here without qualms about donating. And, I didn't mean to imply I would think of Fits or Baps as paupers.
The whole drive at the other place always annoyed me and it frustrated me that there were two different types of members there, the donaters and the "freeloaders". And, there was the pressure to donate and the separate forums for donaters... it was a real turn-off.

You're not exactly talking about a small website. There's a point where you just can't keep the site up without it getting too expensive.

You think I would get banned if I asked for the pictures of the hookers my money was used to buy them with? ;)

Considering the fact that after the split, Phil probably has a hard time finding money to spend on hookers himself, I'd say yes.

Pretty sure Phil isn't a real cop, but a wanna-be-cop corrections officer. Thats where they start people that did poorly in police academy. I have 4 friends that went through police academy here in CA, 2 of which did poorly and ended up as corrections officers in the local jail and the other two did well and went straight to patrol.
Both of the 2 that ended up in corrections have since picked up the pace and were advanced to patrol, one of which just made it into the motorcycle patrol pool (considered quite a sweet gig and can be hard to get into).
It says much that Phill is still a corrections officer after all this time, and doesn't surprise me one bit. How could you expect him to be a honorable policeman when you have the morals of the local con artist or drug dealer?

You know...having a top notch, hi-quality, king sized, gourmet, one of a kind, world class, new and improved, premium, super-sized webcomic mentioned on the wiki entry might give it some notability.
EDIT: Any money donated to the site on behalf of the 'Buy Alien games so he's kept current on gaming trends and ideas to make his wonderfully acerbic and poignant comic that's so well drawn it makes one's soul weep' fund would be greatly appreciated and high fives would be doled out at a very rapid rate.
I considered calling it the 'Buy Alienmastermind a sandwich' fund or the 'Keep Alienmastermind's vehicle full of petrol' fund, but I don't think that's a popular subsidy among the 'Net public these days.
And no, I will not extinguish the light over my door...Sorry, Stinger, I have to put out my red light. I will walk the streets for money (metaphorically speaking about webwhoring my comic) and I personally don't care if it's wrong or if it's right.

Where exactly are you getting this info? While I don't like Phil and would be willing to bet money based on aspects of his personality we have seen that he is just as much of a twat, if not more so, in his every day life as he is on EvAv but I don't see how you can claim to know the exact station of law enforcement he is in based solely on him being a dishonest douche bag.
He could have been lying (I wouldn't put it past him at this point) but I seem to remember him talking about a promotion to detective around the beginning of the year.

Then you'd think he could get a clue.
HA! HA! Anyways, yeah we can probably talk about our issues with the management of our previous haunt without getting into his real life job. Not to bag on you, Felonous; I could dish on a law enforcement officer all day.
I just think we're classier than that...

Wow, I had no idea GWJ was a split from EvAv. Mother fuck it's history repeating itself, hate it when that happens.
And donations are fine, just have a bar saying "we need X amount of money, so far we have X". Done, simple.
What I find fascinating about that is that Gamers With Jobs is hands down my other favorite gaming site and gaming community. Their Conference Call podcast is almost always excellent, and gets listened to on my commute every single week.
Which effectively means that both of the best gaming communities I've ever been part of were both spawned in and then driven out of the same place. That's just crazy.

Eventually donations will be accepted. The Founders as a group put in enough to cover the hosting costs for 6 months (at its current level) and paid for the software the site is run on.Don't forget, that there are other things that donations can go to besides hosting costs. We plan on generating enough revenue to send you guys to every gaming convention in existence to bring back some sweet, sweet coverage for CoG. :D

the option to donate is something i am all for, i did not like having emails about donation drives being shoved down my throat, but a notice once in a while is good.
i at one time used to be a member of a message board called ufck.org, it was fun at first, but then the douchebags took over and ended up running me off when they went from donation drives to pay hosting bills, to now requiring that you pay $30 a week to be a member.

you should just turn off receive messages from admins. Fixed the problem for me.

That's what he told me as well. I don't remember him ever claiming to be a cop. He started off doing corrections several years ago and I don't know that he had any intention of being a police.
As for the whole banning thing. I think this is just a result of the situation that Phil is in now. In the past when people have left there hasn't been such a massive shift in how the site runs. The people who left the site in the past weren't so high profile and the forums were not such a major part of the site so that the ability to give feedback was limited and things pretty much went on as usual.
Now, you have these people who basically created the community that was Evil Avatar jumping ship en masse and people are noticing. Phil can't control that. There is something missing and people can see it. Hell, I noticed it as soon as I logged on after being away from the site after two weeks and I didn't even go there that often to begin with.

WTF? I haven't logged in since the split and I went there earlier today to see what the hullabaloo was. I'm not banned, but I also just moved (and was without internet at home FOR A FUCKING WEEK!) so my new IP isn't in the system. I used to log in from work quite a bit, I'll see Monday if that was banned.
That blows. I gave what I consider to be a lot of dough to that site (I had even PMed Phil to see if I could suss out Giga's total amount to try and aim for it). Oh well. Thanks for checking for me, Kool Aid man!

I also love how, instead of changing the user title to "banned" he left yours up while somehow pruning your post count to 6, JAY. Weird.
I'm not banned, though. When you're banned, can you still browse the forums but just not post? 'Cause I can see the forums.

Nope. You just see the message that everyone keeps posting. And to actually view the site after logging in after banned, you have to clear your cookies.
civil: I was just checking anyone that had posted in the PAX forums, or threads I had posted in/followed. Funnily enough, we all still have our custom titles and post counts, except for James, Bap, AgtFox and Doc Finger. And even wierder, even though their post counts show less than 10, if you check to see their posts, it pulls up all of them.

I haven't gotten any, but possibly as I didn't update my email address there last time it changed. But my mate, who rarely ever visited the place, and as far as I had known hadn't signed up, is apparently getting things like spam for the Mirror's Edge code giveaway. First time he'd ever gotten an email from the site.
On to the donations here thing - while I never donated to EvAv (what with thinking Phil was a tool and other things), I would more than happily chip in here, as you guys actually talk about what it's for and such, so another vote that way.

Did they also start spamming lemonparty? Did they start making alts to get around bans? Did they start acting like an asshole on speed when someone had a different opinion? Did they stop using capital letters and correct punctuation?

You guys betrayed him. I don't blame the guy for being mad.
Heh, kidding. He's pissed the talent that kept his little money boat afloat jumped ship and swam to the next island. EvAv is a wasteland now.
How anyone can keep on supporting his site, at least monetarily, after getting hearing the gory details of what transpired there is beyond me. I'm sure most of them DON'T know, however.

Technically, those of us with access to the site still could log in and just start PMing people letting them know what's what. I know that was done to an extent before so I'm not sure if it should be done again nor if people really want to do that, but it's a possibility.
I don't much care for the idea that there are people over at EvAv that don't know what happened and who wouldn't support him if they did.

Indeed; but this topic appears to be alive enough to warrant giving that decision another look, it seems.

In general, in my experience, it's a poor way of handling any topic to say "we don't talk about that here" and shut the door. There are obviously still users coming in from EvAv who don't know what happened, and even for those who don't fall into that category, there's a pretty clear elephant in the room and they're going to be curious about it.
I certainly think things should be kept civil and I suspect a lot can be handled by simply linking people to threads that explain the situation and then letting them briefly respond to that however they need to, but going into a dictatorial "thread lock" mode over the topic seems the wrong direction to me as a user.

I seem to remember the first round of this split starting before CoG (www.playitreviewit.com) having something to do with taboo subjects, after all....
