Just picked up the new Prof Layton and was surprised to see there's not a thread already. No one else has picked it up yet?

Lemme guess...there's a bunch of puzzles and then at the end, no one was real.

Worst part about the games, in my opinion. The endings have irritated me every time.

I just wish DS games weren't so comparatively expensive. I'd love to snap this up for $10-15 for my iPod. I may get it down the road because I am a fan of the Layton games.

This one really slipped under my radar. I'll probably put it on my Christmas list.

Looking to pick up this one soon as well. I still haven't finished the second (though I tried to jump back into it recently), but as I've already had the ending spoiled and there's not much in the way of continuity, I don't imagine it'll matter much either way.

A bit off topic, perhaps, but I'm also quite interested in how they'll think to make use of the 3DS...

My copy is arriving tomorrow, but any free gaming time I have at the moment is taken up by LEGO Harry Potter. :o

Holy fuck, I just realized I might take this game on my honeymoon. That would be a trip.

Well, there is one now! ;)

I think the problem is the release day, and as mentionned in the weekly releases thread, unless it's Mario or Metroid, a sunday release slips under the radar of most people, and then gets forgotten on the monday.

Snagged a copy on release day for my wife, but it'll probably stay wrapped up until Christmas.

Some way into Chapter 2 - about 30 puzzles in - and just had my ass handed to me three puzzles in a row. Also, I'm loving the story in this one.

The characters are beginning to show some real nuance.

My pet peeve with the layton games is that every once in a while you run into puzzles that either assume you're psychic and know what answer the creators looking for or force you to spend a bunch of hint coins to solve it.

To be fair, that hasn't happened yet. My wife and I are playing through it together, and as soon as we read the solution on two out of those three puzzles, we looked at each other and said, "You know that [minute detail] did look strange to me. I don't know why I didn't think of saying anything."

The third just kicked our asses even though it's just asking you to state the total permutation of paths you can take across a room to get from A to B. No tricks - completely straightforward. You read the clue over and over and it just doesn't get through. You feel like you're having a sudden bot of dyslexia.

Also, while there is some pride in saving hint coins...and I try to find every single one...once I'm putting that money down on a particular puzzle, I almost always go 3 hints deep without hesitating.

What a disappointment. The story was so WTF that I was emotionally uninvolved for most of it. They had real potential with:

The Layton romance storyine

but instead it was handed over to stupidity. Seriously,

giant fucking fortresses?

WTF, indeed. I am disappoint.

Still playing the game, but Professor Layton games could have no story at all and I wouldn't care. I'm all about the puzzles.

It's not that I don't enjoy the characters. I love the gentlemanly mannerisms and the Sherlock/Watson relationship, but you get that just from them interacting with the various weird citizens. You could have no plot at all and just have Layton and Luke wandering London bugging the locals for puzzles and I'd be satisfied.

Also, I think they really enhanced the memo function this time around. I don't remember being able to choose different color pencils as well as two stroke widths in the previous games. It makes figuring out many of the puzzles visually much easier.

The three games are, in order:

Curious Village
Diabolical Box
Unwound Future

Why not just play the one you have now then get the new one later?

Puzzles are great, I give you that. But to me the stories, characters, themes, etc were just as much of a hook. The games always stretched believability (fuck, they destroyed it) but this time I just didn't go for it.

But the first bit I spoilered-out, that had such potential. Then...Hollywood.
