So I have a friend who is wondering if it is at all possible for someone to hack their facebook account to gain access to their computer. someone mentioned they have access to their files.

I told him while possible technically, it is very very unlikely that facebook is how he hacked if he at all was able to. I told him more than likely he was bluffing. Or that if he does have access, he had physical access or used some social engineering/hacking to figure out some info. Anything else I should add or say otherwise?

This does bring up an interesting issue, what if anything, does everyone do to protect themselves while doing their day to day routine on the internet?

Pretty much impossible. Only way I could imagine...and this is stretching...is they somehow got an executable to run on the "client" machine through some form of Javascript hack or something. Highly unlikely that it occurred through Facebook (though there are a lot of questionable third party software...)

I would just say it's a bluff...though, if you really want to up the anti, you can always mention that it is a Federal crime to do what this guy is suggesting to have done.

As for my personal browsing...I'm cautious...usually run NoScript and FlashBlock...mostly I just browse known good sites and only ever go to the "dirty side" through Virtual Machines if I'm really unsure of the site. Mostly, though, I don't really care and just browse normally.
