Long weekend or no long weekend which one are thee? A bit short or a bit long weekend follies for the "unofficial" closing of the summer as the last weekend of summer arrives. I am leaving this (way to hot) summer on a high note since I will be:

http://i365.photobucket.com/albums/oo92/PurpleSanta/weekend3610.jpg

This particular getaway I will have internet access, a nice pool and cable tv! Since it will only be a long weekend, i'm leaving the consoles home which is just an excuse to enjoy more time with my PSP and a certain game. However, once again I will attempt to play something else with these:

P3P- Continuing my addiction in another state.

Ys Seven- time to remove the shrink wrap from this game.

DS library- I have enough unplayed/partially played games to keep me warm if I need.

Long? Short? none at all? What does your weekend look like? What are YOU playing?

Have a great vacation!

I have a techno-elektro festival on a beach somewhere tomorrow, should be good, if the weather doesn't screw it up.

Next to that

DR2: Case Zero, have to save my zombie daughter this time.
BLUR
Last Remnant, I have completed the first Koeningsdorf battle so will probably move on to 2 now.

I will be playing a little bit of WoW, a little bit of P4, and whole lot of Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth. I just started up VP the other day, and I'm loving it so far.

That sounds like a lot of fun. Music, sand, hot women in bikini's and alcohol? I think you won this weekend round

My wife is annoyed that I get out of class today five hours after her, because that means she has to wait longer to watch Machete.

Other than that, I actually keep forgetting it's a three day weekend. I'll probably bounce between Valkyria Chronicles and Dragon Quest IX, and maybe pop in Metroid: Other M.

Started Ys Seven on psp.

At home I'm finishing Bioshock 2, just started Fontaine Futuristics.

At work (in my spare time of course) I decided it's finally time to start Persona 3. I'm currently tweaking the PS2 emulator and figuring out the best key binding configuration. I'm sure this will take forever to get through. It sure will be nice to have save states.

You might like to look into getting a usb-PS2 controller adapter. I've got a couple of them, and have used them occasionally with a PS1 emulator. I've also heard that you can get PS3 controllers to work with a PC over bluetooth, but I wasn't able to get mine to work. Probably just needed to spend a little more time with it.

I might get into Valkyria Chronicles 1 in preparation for picking up the second. I'm also expecting Mafia 2 and BlazBlue: Continuum Shift from Gamefly. Besides that, I'm sure a couple of the various titles on my Steam list will be perused.

I am tempted to pick up DQ IX, so if I see a Gamestop where i'm headed a strong possibility to buy it.

That's what I like about P3P. Sleep mode acts as a passive save system. Although having a real save in the middle of tartarus isn't bad either.

I forgot about Steam on my list. Being less distracted by the consoles, maybe I can play some Plants vs Zombies and a few other games i've been ignoring.

I played Zelda's Majoria's Mask entirely at work 100% completion with a keyboard. It was challenging but doable with save states (aiming the bow was the hardest part).

Hmm...I though Persona was normal JRPG, I didn't know it was an action game.

Believe it or not, I play games other than Persona.

The one I was thinking of is this game called Suguri. It's a shooter for PC, but it's designed to be used with a controller.

I'm still trying to recover from seeing the ending credits of Borderlands last night. I see the ending credits of games so rarely I have to give myself a day of recovery when I do play one to the end.

Like Vigil, I'm thinking about starting up the original Valkyria Chronicles before picking up the Valkyria Chronicles mini me. If I pick it up now it will just sit there until the price drops to less than $20. I'm sure it's a great game but I've been down this road too many times and I know how it ends.

As for non-gaming weekend plans go. I will probably head down to Hot Springs at least for day this weekend and visit a few folks. I've been really bad about not making the drive down and I'm starting to make a few people angry. Then again, they can drive their ass up to Conway if they want to see me. Actually, I need to go check on some things at the farm so I will definitely need to spend a day down there.

I'm going to beat Batman: AA tonight hopefully. I'm nearing the end.

I have some cheap Cyberhome "surround sound" headphones that I received yesterday from Amazon, hooked up to my optical port on the tv, that I am enjoying a lot (my post in the Weekday thread commented on how I got freaked out last night thinking someone was downstairs with me...but it was just the game's audio, on my much better headphones, that caused this panic). So I can't wait to pick up another game to play and test out the audio.

I don't know what I'll play next though. I really should put Uncharted 2 in my PS3 and just go nuts. I'm not buying any new games for the foreseeable future, so I want to get through all my current ones so I can switch to Gamefly for all my gaming needs. I have a LOT of current ones.

And now that I have these headphones I should be able to create a better gaming area. Maybe this weekend I can talk my wife into helping me move crap around. After we weather Earl, anyway. Sounds like we won't get hit too hard at all now though.

It is amazing how quick I get bored with games that I have previously beaten. I was playing Demon's Souls all week on vacation, loving it, and finally beat it on Wednesday. I load up New Game + last night and after running two levels, am bored to tears. But it is not the game...its me.

So, what to play next. I might download Dead Rising2: Case Zero as well as try to get back into God of War 3. Also, I should try to finish up the trophies I'm missing in Shooter (3 of them, but I know the one is somewhat glitched). At the same time, I'm really craving to play Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena.

My internet is broken, so lots of offline gaming this weekend :(

More Dragon Quest IX, finally made it to Gittish empire, but I'll probably spend some time levelling up with other classes (still a minstrel), no sign of the Sage class yet, so might press on till I get that quest.

Played some Borderlands over the last few days, so I'll carry on with that. Thought about starting with sniper bloke, but I'm not sure how I'd get on with just focusing on snipers and handguns (I like to stick with the classes preferred weapons so the gameplay is different) but most likely will carry on with Lilyth.

Oblivion disc is sitting around tempting me, so might bite the bullet and OOO up.

Long weekend here: My oldest daughter will be visiting from NYC and we'll be moving my youngest daughter up to Bellingham for the start of her junior year of college.

I'll probably blow up some tanks in World Of Tanks and blast some Zombies in Borderlands.

Still trying to get into an RPG: I've got a bunch waiting in the wings, but I just can't seem to make a commitment.

So jealous...

I'll be playing:

Darksiders - About to assault the Cathedral and face Tiamat. This game is almost as good as God of War, and miles better than Dante's Inferno. Fuck DI.

Elemental: War of Magic - Most are drinking the haterade on this game, but I've had some limited fun with it. There's a new patch out that is supposed to clear up the performance issues, so I'll give it a try. Still, until they fix the UI, magic, and other problems, I probably won't play it seriously until v1.1.

P3P - Maybe this will be the weekend I finish it.

Machete - I hope to see it this weekend.

Do it. You'll see why I've managed to somehow sink over 60 hours into the bloody thing and why I can't seem to tear myself away from it and go back to P3P like I want to!

More Dragon Quest IX, finally made it to Gittish empire, but I'll probably spend some time levelling up with other classes (still a minstrel), no sign of the Sage class yet, so might press on till I get that quest.I'm in the process of getting ready to go into Gittingham Castle (or whatever it's called). With the party layout I have now, I'm kicking so much butt it's not funny. Speaking if DQIX, I almost got into a nerd feud with a guy at the comic shop about it. He was telling me how much he hated it and that he just played it for a bit and traded it in. "In Dragon Warrior, WHERE THIS SERIES STARTED, you're not a stupid ANGEL!"

I had to bite my tongue not to ream him out about how the series has always been called Dragon Quest and that if you can get your head out of your butt about being an angel and get to work on, you know, PLAYING THE GAME, it's incredibly addictive and really harkens back to all of the GOOD things about the series and tweaks some of the stuff that didn't. Maybe he's miffed that you don't have to manually open a menu to go up and down stairs :P

Darksiders - About to assault the Cathedral and face Tiamat. This game is almost as good as God of War, and miles better than Dante's Inferno. Fuck DI.I need to get back to Darksiders and finish it up. I loved it back when I was working on it before I got distracted REALLY close to the end. Probably one of the most underappreciated games of the year so far.

As for what I'll be playing this weekend:

DQIX (DS) - As I mentioned, I'm in the Gittish empire and ready to have fun storming the castle. We'll see how that goes.

Valkyria Chronicles 2 (PSP) - I'm really loving this game, esp. now that I've got a bunch of the crew from VC1 on my squad. I still hate Avan's "I'm pumped and ready to go!" still portrait though.

Resonance Of Fate (PS3) - With FFXIII finished, I might get around to cracking the plastic on this game. I've had it since it came out (got it for 'free' with the full trade in value of GoW3 after having finished that in 3 days) but wanted to finish FFXIII first.

Wipeout (Wii) - This isn't the racing Wipeout... it's the one based on the show. I'll probably play it with my kids a bit more this weekend but it's broken enough that my 'pro gamer' brain is driving me insane witnessing all of the screwed up mechanics behind the scenes.

Mafia 2 or Starcraft 2 (PC) - I'm not sure which of these I'll play, but i'll probably play one of them.

And last but not least,

Creationary (table & imagination) - I finally tracked a copy of this down today. I've had a couple of friends rave about how good it is and then seeing Tycho & Gabe rave on about it a week or two ago really ramped up the 'gotta find this' urge. I've been looking for games to play with my son that don't use electricity and since he's already into Lego something fierce, this should be a really fun experience.

I should be visiting those Hot Springs instead. Sometimes visiting and checking in feels too much like a chore.

I've added a new game to my list. I just purchased the pool table bundle in PlayStation Home. Since I needed a place to put the pool table I purchased the London Pub. I have not logged into Home in a long time. Damn, they have added some neat stuff. Sure, it's mostly mini games but I can play darts and pool in my newly purchased pub. Oh, and I have a pet dog that just sleeps all the time. Why can't Blinx be more like the interactive pet in Neptune?

edit -OK, I've spent about 5 hours and $10 in PlayStation Home today. If they could get rid of the download times when entering a new area the app would be absolutely incredible. That, and make male characters that look less creepy rapist. Seems like every one I tried to make looked that way until I made a hipster Billy Ray Cyrus wanna be.

That sounds like someone criticizing after having heard one thing about it, and nothing else. DQIX is pure Dragon Quest, but everyone who's played it knows that all too well.

As for me, last night the wife and I watched Machete. It was awesome. Everything the fake trailer from a few years ago promised. My wife was impressed how they managed to incorporate just about every ridiculous thing (threesome in the water) into the movie. People in the theater were cheering at various moments. One in particular involving jumping out a window made my wife shout out loud with glee.

But I think this was the way to watch the movie. It was a movie set in Austin, made by someone from Austin, and we watched it in a theater that is an Austin institution. We topped it off by getting some ice cream at another Austin institution, then when we got home my wife insisted we watch Planet Terror. Lots of fun.

Yeah, but anyone trying to display their nerd knowledge would know that it was only called Dragon Warrior in the US because there were some trademark issues with Dragon Quest.

And it wasn't that hard. I beat it several times as a kid. Then again, those were the days when I could whoop Ninja Gaiden and once beat Mike Tyson, things I can't seem to do any more. So maybe it was hard.

The thing is, the guy claimed to have played it and hated it but for silly, silly reasons. I do understand how the slow burn intro part might not be for anyone, but I really wonder if he spent more than an hour with it and actually, you know, started playing the game proper as opposed to the prologue.

What frederec said. I know it was called Dragon Warrior here (some of my fondest childhood memories are of playing DW for long stretches of time in our front room... One of the reasons I love the series so much because the monsters still look so cute, just like in the DW days) but this guy was acting like having it called Dragon Quest was some massive betrayal of the series.

And the first game wasn't really that hard. You just got slapped around pretty badly if you tried to push across the next bridge before you were truly ready for it.

Speaking of the guy at the shop, he did admit to playing DQVIII and enjoying it, so he's not completely stuck in the past. I honestly think, the more I ponder it, that he never got past the beginning of the game and out of Angel Falls.

Oh my god. Angel Falls. I get it now. My lord, the punnery in that game keeps getting stronger and stronger. Anyone who complains about the localization of the DQ games, esp. DQIX, needs a reality check. I slapped myself yesterday for taking so long to clue into the pun on the Gittish Empire and Gittingham Palace. Sigh.

I rented Kick-Ass so we will watch that tonight. I beat Batman last night so I started Bioshock 2 this morning, on Hard. I don't think I'm going to like Hard so I'm going to restart on normal. I was only like 5 minutes into it anyway.

I also picked up The Star Wars Trilogy on Goozex, and at the same time Risen is shipping out to me as well. I've been waiting FOREVER for Risen and MagnaCarta 2. Now I don't have enough points for MC2 if it ever becomes available (I'm #3 in the "wanted" line right now, but that could change if people that are in line in front of me decide they want the game suddenly).

We went to the fair today and I saw the grossest thing. A cow was laying down with this bloody stuff coming out of her ass. Well, it wasn't her ass...turned out to be her vagina. Apparently she gave birth at 11 AM this morning and here it was about 2PM and she was still passing the afterbirth. My wife happened to walk into the tent after buying a drink and I saw her across the way pivot on her heels and walk away. She bent over for a second like she was going to be sick. Heh.

The real draw for JRPGs is the boobies (http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/97816-Naughty-JRPG-Includes-Mouse-Pad-Featuring-Boobs).

It's not the slimes themselves I dislike. Heck, I find the fack that the Slime has become the Moogle/Chocobo of DQ to be amusing as all heck. I just hate the artwork, and on the slime particularly.

I've bought DQ 7, 8, and at least 2 for the DS, and it's not the gameplay that makes me trade it, it's Toriyama's eye-searing excuse for art.

Yeah, yeah. About 90% of my problem is Toriyama's art, which I think is the ugliest I've ever seen in the Anime/Manga industry. It just totally ruins any enjoyment I have with the game.

Gah. And don't get me started on the freaking Slimes.

Jack Frost is the mascot of the Shin Megami Tensei series, and of Atlus in general.

I started Metroid: Other M today. I'm enjoying it well enough. But I really wish Samus didn't talk. I think the game would be better with no voices or cutscenes in general. They're generally redundant. The ship setting with the other military guys also makes it feel like Dead Space. I'm having fun, but it's putting me in the mood to play some Metroid Prime or Super Metroid.

I rented Kick-Ass so we will watch that tonight. I beat Batman last night so I started Bioshock 2 this morning, on Hard. I don't think I'm going to like Hard so I'm going to restart on normal. I was only like 5 minutes into it anyway.

I started it up on hard as well, because I usually only play through games once, and....I dunno. I am always out of money, ammo, health packs, eve syringes, whatever. I might scale it back to normal.

I am still enjoying Valkyrie Profile, but I almost feel like I should have a walkthrough open in front of me the entire time. I don't like missing out on things in RPGs, and there's a whooooooole lot going on in this game.

Looking forward to going out to Kmart and getting a deal on Valkyria Chronicles 2 tomorrow. Here's hoping it's in stock, and the deal actually works at the register.

I started on normal and bumped it down to easy for the same reason (but easy really is easy) :o

You can change the difficulty at any time at least on the PC version. I just started the final level today. I hope to finish it up soon.

I'm right there with ya on Toriyama, I can't stand the guy's art. I've always looked past it for DQ, and for CT of course (though that was tougher).

As for my gaming this weekend, yesterday I tried a few demos. First was Alien Breed, which really surprised me. I enjoyed it quite a bit more than I thought I would and I have a feeling I may pick it up when it's released on the PSN. Next was Castle Crashers, which again I enjoyed more than I thought I would, but it's not a game I'd pay $15 for. Maybe if it goes on sale some time. After that was Vanquish, which, 3 for 3 now, I really enjoyed. I won't be getting it at launch, mostly due to lack of funds, but I will pick it up eventually. But, alas, all good things must come to an end, and the last demo I tried was Ruse. It looked like crap and I just didn't have the patience for it.

Today was a bit more Darksiders, though not a whole lot. I can now break that blue ice stuff, so that's a plus. Tonight I really need to get in more VC2.

I didn't even realize that Toriyama did the art in CT until much, much later in life after I'd already dubbed it my all-time favourite game ever.

I love his monster designs something fierce though, which is almost soul-shattering for me given how much I otherwise loathe his art, but I bet it's because I fell in love with the cute monsters in DW back when I was, what, 11 or 12?

Speaking of DQ, I'm busy grinding golems to try to finish one off with a critical hit. I have ONE left to kill that way and I can't seem to pull it off, which is all the more annoying because I got two down that way in the span of about 5 minutes when I started...

Well, I'm really impressed with Bioshock 2 so far. It's well done. And, it's gorgeous. I remember Bioshock being pretty, but did they enhance the sequel or something? Maybe it's just because I haven't played it in a while, but B2 is a really pretty game. The lighting and colors are fantastic.

I'm so damn tired that I'm going to hit the hay early. Went to a bonfire and cookout tonight with the boy, but I was up way too early and went to bed way too late so I'm going to remedy that right now.

I thought that I'd fire up Demon's Souls again and see if I couldn't let it work its magic on me. No dice tonight. I just wasn't in the right headspace for what the game requires and got kicked around like a dirty shirt no matter where I went. I'm just not focused tonight. It didn't help that my brain kept thinking wistfully of DQIX where all i have to do is mash A a lot :)

I'm actually thinking VERY strongly about firing up Little King's Story and getting to work on it, but 11pm at night on a work night (I have to be there at 7am tomorrow) is not the best time to try to get back into a strategy/RPG hybrid on the Wii :)

So what did you learn?

Yesterday's festivities included going to a brewery that was founded in the 1800's. They still brew their own beer, which I tried via the beer sampler. They had 7 beers they were making for the summer, I couldn't decide so I went with the sampler. The one that was described as tart, which they add in a raspberry flavor to mellow some of the tart was the best IMO. There was one also called secret brew which also was excellent. If I wasn't here for such a short stay i'd go back for the beer and good fried appetizers. I wish you were there Mr. Gnome.

Not much gaming done besides more grinding in Tartarus. I'm almost to level 60 now and still in October. Once again I am leveling up some of my less used team members. For now no hot spring break until I can get past level 60.

Every weekend I think strongly about firing up any number of games. LKS is one I have but have never played. If the weekend were 400 hours long I might be able to accomplish something. Or, if I could pause time after the little one goes to bed each night. As it is now if I really focus on a game I might be able to beat it in 2 weeks. That's a big maybe. That's why I get so far behind.

I get excited seeing a bunch of games on my shelf. But suddenly the weekend ends and I'm back at work. It's disheartening. I wish I didn't have to work but had a constantly replenishing bank account to cover the bills and allow me to live comfortably like I can when working 40 hours a week. That way I could get much more done each day and have time to enjoy life 100%. Being at work more days than you are at home sucks.

Then again...I guess life isn't as sweet without the sour. You could have a saccharin overdose...though I would sure as hell like to try.

Use booze. Overdose or trying to overdose with alcohol is much more preferable than with artificial sweetener.

I tried that in college for 4 years. All it got me was waking up early in the morning and staring out the window wondering what the fuck I was doing with myself--and what I did the night before. Caught up with me quite fiercely my final year. These days, it's a couple beers and I'm done. Like last night at a cookout/bonfire I only had 2 and I was with friends. And those beers I brought were well over a month old, sitting in my fridge.

With a child, it's probably for the best anyway. My parents never drank when I was growing up and alcohol was never in the house and I think that was a good thing. They still don't drink, but my dad tries to be cool and have one of my beers from time to time when he's around. He has to choke it down.

I haven't even played any of them, so I guess you've got me beat there. ;)

I've had a wonderful weekend so far, although it has involved very little gaming (SURPRISE!)

On Friday night I hung out with some friends. We played cards and had a few drinks, after which we watched a terrible movie called Ginger Snaps, about a red-headed girl named Ginger (get it?) who gets bitten by a werewolf. The premise is alright, but the actual movie is one of the worst I've ever seen. It was so bad that we couldn't stop watching it.

Yesterday I had a lunch with a friend and then walked around town for a bit before meeting some classmates and heading to the Minnesota State Fair. We have the second-largest state fair in the country, and it was fun! There were thousands upon thousands of people there. We walked around and checked out the sites, and of course we ate lots of fair foods. I ate the following:

deep-fried cheese curds
hushpuppies
whipped honey (amazing!)
deep-fried mac & cheese on a stick
deep-fried oreo cookies
sweet potato fries with whipped cream

I also drank a couple of beers and had a beergarita (margarita mix with beer).

Needless to say I was pretty full at the end of it all, and I don't even want to know how much grease and how many calories I consumed.

Being a vegetarian I passed on some of the "delights" that my classmates ate, including roasted turkey leg, alligator sausage on a stick, deep-fried cheese burger, buffalo steak on a stick, etc.

I'm going to brunch with a friend in about twenty minutes, after which I'm going to stock up on tissues and allergy medication. I hate taking pills, but I've barely been able to breathe for the last two or three weeks, and I'm tired of it.

I also need to do a bunch of unpacking today and tomorrow as well as laundry. There's only one washer and one dryer in this building, and they are both down in the creepy basement. Oh joy!

I'm hoping to finally do some gaming as well, although I'm not holding my breath.

Yeah, but it was made long enough ago that it's had several sequels before Twilight ever even got popular. As mentioned, it's basically a metaphor for puberty, and as that goes, it's okay. But yeah, the whole opening scene had me laughing with how silly it was.

I will agree that the sequel isn't that great but the prequel is actually kind of neat. I don't know if I'd like them as much watching them now with all of the stupid teen goth monster flicks but at the time they were pretty decent.

I spent the majority of my afternoon at work playing Beatles Rock Band with the guys. We blew through the whole 'storyline' in about 2-3 hours :)

While I'm still thinking of working on LKS today, I'm also tempted to get back into Fable 2. With the 3rd game on its way, I really should fire the second game up again and see if I can get into it again. I'm also curious to see if my gold has been accumulating for the past 2 years :)

She really gets into some of the odder horror movies in the genre. She also is a big fan of the Saw movies. The only reason I watched them was she found the early releases cheap. Could be worse. Everything you've listed is still fairly mainstream horror. I make a bit of a habit of finding really obscure and low-budget stuff on Netflix and watching that. My wife wonders what's wrong with me that I watch these things, and my response is generally that I heard that there's something interesting in this particular movie. It could be one scene, it could be the makeup, it could be the hilariously bad acting, but there will be something in it that makes it worth watching.

And every now and then, I hit on something unexpected and good, like Severance, Spiral, or Infestation.

Actually, it has nothing to do with Uzumaki. It's an indie film from 2007, a somewhat slow-paced thriller. It's a move that I spent most of the time wondering whether or not I liked it, or what I thought about it. But as it came together in the end, it totally won me over.
