I was pretty surprised by this (http://www.aintitcool.com/node/38935):Fox will not continue with “King of the Hill” beyond its current, 13th season.
The good news is creator Mike Judge has a new animated sitcom, ABC’s “The Goode Family,” launching on ABC shortly just as “King” finishes up.
In the meantime, Fox will be airing three animated sitcoms from Seth MacFarlane: “Family Guy,” “American Dad” and “The Cleveland Show.”

Rough. King of the Hill was great, though I haven't watched it much recently.
I hate Family Guy and all that stuff though. I really don't get why it's caught on so much. I fail to see the funny 89% of the time.

I was a fan of Family Guy up until the point that you could define that show with a mathematical equation.

I appreciate King Of The Hill, though I probably haven't watched it regularly in 5-6 years.
I LOATHE American Dad and have never even heard of The Cleveland Show before now. I used to really like Family Guy and tried to like it after it came back from cancellation but aside from one or two funny bits every few episodes, it really has lacked what made it special prior to the first cancellation. It's one of those shows that is trying too hard to be offensive which usually leads to boredom instead of shock. Oh well.

King of the Hill is a great show, but it has run it's course. However, the fact that they continue to throw more air time at Seth MacFarlane, when he just isn't delivering, is shameful. I think the new Family Guy stuff isn't too bad, but most people seem to hate it. I think I've seen one good episode of American Dad, and The Cleveland Show just seems like a dumb idea. They could have spun-off Brian and Stewie easily; I don't understand why they didn't do that. Their episodes of Family Guy are always the best.

KoTH has pretty much ran its course really. I'm sure everyone is actually somewhat relieved to move on to something else after 13 years. Still, it is a great show and I hate to see it go.
As to the other shows, I only like Family Guy. It is worth a good chuckle here and there. I despise American Dad, and The Cleveland Show's existence is news to me. It will probably suck though.

I was wondering if that was Cleveland from Family Guy. Why him of all people?
If they'd made a Quagmire/Creepy Old Guy show, I'd watch that :)
But Family Guy has fallen into such a rut I just stopped watching it last year when I realized it was the same show over and over and over again.

Wow, I'm surprised at the reaction to this. I'll admit that all of the shows have their moments, but I've had a deep hatred of Judge's stuff for years. Not all that much a fan of McFarlane's stuff, either. And for that matter, go ahead and take the Simpsons off, too.
...I'm suddenly very aware of how happy I am to not have TV here. :p

Wrong. Keeping more McFarlane crud on the air is a strike against. It just prove Fox is still ran by idiots.
I think my favorite line was when Bobby said the kids called him T-Rex, cause his arms couldn't support his upper body. :o
I tell you what, this chaps my hide, yep.
KotH has been a solid show for years. It's got just enough realism to make it work, and a whole lot of heart. Of course I grew up and live in Texas (and in fact Mike Judge lives in a suburban neighborhood in southwest Austin), so I get to see firsthand the stereotypes they are playing off of- and they are so right on. Anyway... I'm sad to see this go.

Honestly, I was surprised last year when I saw new episodes. I thought it had been canceled years ago as they didn't seem to really promote it much over the last few years. Its too bad, I always did like it though I agree that the show has definitely run its course.
And now the only thing left to combat a Seth MacFarlane Sunday*shudder* is Simpsons.

Maybe it has to do with being familiar with the subculture and stereotypes that are portreyed, but like Bone said, they are spot on.
Plus, Hank Hill is easily one of the most easy to identify with characters I have ever seen on a show.

I'm in the camp of those who thought it was already canceled. The show has had its moments, even if I was not a huge fan. As for the McFarlane shows, I do agree that Family Guy is a shell of what it was. American Dad has actually had the better shows in the past 1-2 years, IMO. But, I only watch sporadically, so it may just be luck in what episodes I see.

I don't want to sound overjoyed that a show got canceled, but I can honestly say I hated this show, so the fact its now gone is not a big deal.
Man, the hate for the show is surprising to me, but to each his own I guess.
My grandpa, even though he was not a Texan (he's a Cajun man whose speech is sometimes as hard to decipher as the coach in the Water Boy), was SO much like Cotton Hill it was scary. He was also very injured in the war and had a lot of racism leftover from his experiences with the Japanese and the Germans (although his family name was Rome, truncated from Rommel, so in effect he was fighting his ancestors).
I myself felt like Bobby Hill growing up, a dorky kid who hated sports and liked creativity. I could probably go through the list of characters and give you a real world example of each. Even Dale.
I liked that the show tackled lots of issues- sex, drugs, adultery, and most of all, real family issues. This show was ten times the show Married with Children was, because KotH was not a parody of American life, it was a celebration of it.

This thread seems pretty divided between the loves and hates with little in between. I really liked the show and it's going to be sad to see it go but it's been on 13 seasons which is pretty long for any show.

I'm in Texas too and I bet that has a lot to do with liking this show. Thanks for getting it Bone!
The saddest part of this news is that Fox's "Animation Domination" is becoming "MacFarlane Night".

I can understand that. There were good aspects of the show that weren't really comedic, but it just never grabbed my attention.
I can't say things like Family Guy are any better though. If anything, I find American Dad far funnier than Family Guy anymore.
Especially after the "Bird is the word" crap. I already started to dislike Family Guy for dragging out jokes, and the ending of that show just showed me that not only does McFarlane plan on continuing to do so, he wanted to let us know that he doesn't care if we like it. Way to tell the fans that got your show put back on the air that you don't give a fuck if they like it or not.
Does he just make 10 minutes of show, and try to think of jokes to repeat the entire episode to fill the remaining time?

He narrates Deadliest Catch, which I think is what led to him getting the Dirty Jobs gig. Deadliest Catch is AWESOME, you have to watch it. It follows four or five crab boats and their crews as they do the Alaskan crab fishing gig. Super dangerous, and completely addictive. You start to know the people and even fear for their lives with them as you go from season to season. About ten minutes in that water could kill you.

Someone once told me "Who gives a shit, they FISH..oooohh, how tough!"
I bet that guy would be dead 10 minutes into their voyage. Some people just don't realize how dangerous that job is.
No kidding. Even without the freezing water, just avoiding getting crushed by 500 pound crab pots looks hard enough. Or not getting dragged to the bottom of the ocean if your foot gets caught in a crab line.

I never really enjoyed King of The Hill. The animation and character design was pretty craptacular, the theme (red necks out in Texas) never interested me, the dialogue was interesting, but never stimulating.
I am disappointed that they continue to greenlight the McFarlane shows. Fmaily Guy lost its flair after season 3, American Dad is an abortion, and The Cleveland Show is just a dried up utter.

So what you are saying is that you never got it. The theme was not rednecks out in Texas. In fact "rednecks," as you so affectionatly call them, were often berated by the shows protagonist.
I don't mind if you didn't like it, you are entitled to your tastes, but calling it a show about rednecks screams ignorance about the show.

I think even your description is hilarious. The show was genius in it's way. I think it's the very thing that some people love about the show is the exact same thing others hate about it. It's all about reception I guess.
That's the thing, Buddha- you only described the surface qualities of the characters. They are much more than that, and Hank (while still anal retentive) is a lot smarter, and cares a lot more about his friends and family, then he initially lets on. Bobby is an awesome character, often really naive and yet full of a kid's wisdom. Peg does get pigeonholed a lot, and sometimes does take the more cruel punishment from the writers, but even she sees through her haze of ignorance pretty often.
It's one of those shows you'd really need to watch over the years to appreciate, maybe, but even the side characters have a lot to offer. The way everyone tries to protect Dale from his wife's infidelity (and his own denial when the facts are right in front of him) actually ring true for the kind of person he is. Luann, as dumb and naive as she is, is an awesome character to watch change over time. And of course Cotton Hill can't seem to adapt to this world, often tries to make it adapt to him, but ultimately realizes it's not his world anymore, it's just the world he saved from Hitler and Hirohito (who took his shins!).

To be honest, many years back when I caught a couple episodes here and there I thought the show was pretty terrible. Its just a matter of different tastes. I never liked King of the Hill even remotely, nor did any of my friends. I went to school with a bunch of guys who worked at John Deere and to a man they loved the show. Why? Who knows, maybe its a matter of knowing people you can relate into the characters or something.
I like Family Guy. The more recent seasons haven't been as good, but I think he lost some of his magic when he was in limbo. American Dad never did much for me, if anything I think it just uses up ideas that could be used in FG. I've seen a few episodes that were good, but I hate almost all of the characters, so its hard to get into it at all. The Cleveland show just sounds stupid as hell and its only effect will be to dilute what talent he has to yet another show that he doesn't need to have on the air.
I never really wanted to see KotH cancelled or anything, I just never cared (well after I got over losing Beavis and Butthead, I guess). To be honest I thought it had been cancelled a long time ago. His new show will likely be pretty similar. Hell maybe I'll actually find it funny in some way. :p

Because Hank was the most regular American working man to appear on TV. - EVER.
He was actually the anti-homer. Where as Peter is Homer if he grew up in new England in the 70s...instead of the mid-west in the 60s.

I don't hate family guy...but I just wish everyone would just awknowledge how much they've basically just lifted from, well, a far superior show. (granted it's fallen from greatness but...having been watching seasons 4 and 5, I can say that seasons 2-8 are all excellent.)
I also have to say that the art style of family guy is so lazy and simple it's just nauseating at times the line work is just so thick and dopey-looking compared to the clean lines of the simpsons.
