View Full Version : David Tennant leaving Doctor Who
:( :(
He will be in the 08 Xmas special and the four 09 specials, but after that someone new will take over.
In an emotional speech by live video link at ITV's National Television Awards yesterday, David Tennant revealed his plans to leave Doctor Who at the end of next year. The announcement came after Tennant was awarded the gong for Outstanding Drama Performance for his role as The Doctor in the sci-fi show. "I love this part and I love this show so much, that if I don't take a deep breath and move on now, I never will," he explained.
Little more here. (http://www.tv.com/story/11799.html?tag=headlines;title;11799&om_act=convert&om_clk=news)

It was going to happen eventually...better that he do it on his own terms. The Doctor Who character is built to have revolving lead actors.

It's a crying shame because Tennant was brilliant in the role. Still, I've learned to cut new Doctors some slack and I'm sure whoever is chosen will be equally brilliant in their own way.

Aww, darn. He was fantastic. I'm interesting to see how he plays out of the show.

I saw this earlier today and both the wife and I are sad about this. We were initially skeptical when Christopher Eccleston left but all our fears disappeared after watching David Tennant. Hopefully the next Doctor will follow the trend.

God dammit :( He was such an awesome Doctor. I was hoping for one more season with him.

They need to replace him with a CGI Tom Baker.

Darn, I wonder who the next Dr. will be, or how they will do the transition.

I think that is why it, like James Bond, tends to have such longevity and is most often really good. Just of the last two: Dave Tennet and Chris Eccleston are very different actors, but still manage to keep the quirky charm of the Doctor intact. His name escapes me but I found the Doctor of the early 90's a tad too dark, seemingly to compete with American Sci Fi and what it had become with Deep Space 9.

Paul McGann?
I wouldn't worry about not liking him, he's been universally rubbish in everything bar Withnail and I.
I only hope that the initial talk of Robert Carlyle taking over were bullshit. He is abysmal.
As for Tennant, it took me a while to warm up to him, but I learned to love him.
It'll be interesting with Moffat taking over, because his episodes always seem to be a little darker or really left-of-field (not a bad thing considering he's had some of the best episodes since the relaunch!). It's hard to believe that someone who came up with Coupling could go on and do the episodes he did as well as Jekyll.
Which reminds me, I like the talk of Patterson Joseph taking the mantle. Having just seen him in Neverwhere, Jekyll and even Green Wing, I think he's quite good. Especially given that even though I've seen him in three different shows, I had nfi he was the same guy until I IMDBed him now. :P

The second season of the IT crowd wouldn't have be half as good without him.

So I've been thinking this over (obviously) and there's a bit of rumor-y spoiler-y timey wimey stuff regarding the upcoming specials.
David Morrissey is apparently playing a character who claims to be yours truly in the Christmas Special. Talk is it's an adaptation of an existing novel/story where two doctors meet, and Doc 10 thinks this just might be a future incarnation of himself, but eventually finds out it was just a doctor impersonator. (Why anybody would want to impersonate me, is.. Well delightfully obvious!)
Now that dear old David Tennant is leaving the role, I wonder if we might see a twist reveal that David Morrissey really is the next Doctor? The sheer geeky coolness of having a future regeneration show up before the regeneration is rather fetching. IMHO.
It's all quite unlikely, but I like it. Plus the pics of Mr. Morrissey representing a future version of myself look rather acceptable, if a bit more Victorian than I'd prefer. I thought I grew out of that back in 2006 or so!

eee! Somebody else who watches IT Crowd! Such a great show ^_^
On topic, while I am sad to see Tennant leave, I actually liked Eccleston slightly more, so to my mind they've had two great doctors out of two so far, I'm fairly confident that the next one will be great too.

I'm still wondering if there will be a third series of the IT Crowd.
I instantly liked Eccleston's Doctor, and I think he was injected with a lot of inner conflict. Tennant grew on me and it seemed like it took him longer to be conflicted about his personal going on. He was more light hearted.

Yeah, I think that's what I liked about Eccleston's doctor too, he seemed like such a deep and solid character whereas Tennant's started out as more of a goofball. He did grow on me though. I was so happy to see Eccleston on Heroes even though the beard made him almost unrecognizable.

I enjoyed Tennant more than Eccleston, as Eccleston seemed to overact, but take it very seriously. Tennant was goofy most of the time, but when the script called for serious drama, he could pull it off much better.

I don't know. I thought Eccleston was just written to be more serious. He partnered up with Rose, she did bone head things, and he was showing that while it's fun, sometimes it's serious business out there in the universe. Not to mention he kind kept saying he's the last and that he killed everyone. I think a transformation was needed to loosen him up. Tennant got serious but I don't all the weight of bad ass was on his shoulders.
I think when they both go serious, you can tell it's the same character. Or even smile. That's pretty cool.

I don't mind trading out Doctors every once in a while, but it seems like these guys just aren't interested in hanging around very long. I mean, four years isn't that long to be at one job.
Then again, I guess I just have been hoping that someone would start shooting for Tom Baker's record.

What's Tom Baker's record? I think with Eccleston they only want him around for a short time cause they wanted to present the change aspect of the doctor. Tennant sounds like he's leaving. That would make 4 years? But what's up with these revolving companions, amirite?

About seven years. Everyone else has topped out around three or four. So it's not a huge difference, but it is still there.
And I 100% agree with the frustrations with too many companions. I didn't like Donna when she first showed up in the Christmas special a bit ago, but not long into this season she became my favorite companion of the new series so far. The way the last episode was going, I really thought we might have a companion situation on our hands like with Romana, who was a time lord hanging out with Tom Baker's Doctor. I saw a bit recently with the two of them, and it was great. Rather than having the standard setup where the companion is an idiot and the doctor knows everything, Romana could counter every snarky overly-intelligent remark with one of her own. I thought that if Donna could have gone that way, it would have been all kinds of awesome.

lol... I didn't think they were getting rid of her. And for that reason, my mind was exploding during that episode. I didn't know how that could even work with two smart folks.

Like I said, if you want a taste of it, check out some of Tom Baker's stuff with Romana. The one I watched was "City of Death," but there's more. She was around for two seasons (edit: whoops, looks like three), but regenerated after one season since the first actress got pregnant.
I was pretty pissed when they got rid of Donna. I mean, they kept Billy Piper around for two seasons, and she's my least favorite of the new companions. (Don't want to start a flame war with that one, I know lots of people love her, but after this last season my preferences go Donna > Martha > Rose.)

Why did I know you would bring up Jack? I mostly count the full-season regular companions when I think about it. Besides, Jack has his own show these days. And to be honest, his moments as an arbitrary asshole in Torchwood drag down his character. See especially "Adrift," where he doesn't tell Gwen what's going on...um...just to make the episode drag on longer? Take out moments like that, and Jack is pretty darn cool, if for no other reason than it's an American actor in a prominent role on a British show (or two).

I know. I almost like him more already. But that's the actor i think and not his Doctor. Would be interesting to see what uniform he wears as the Doctor. I really hope this isn't rubbish info to cover up someone else they have in mind. I would probably hate the next Doctor for not being Joseph. :)

I'm pretty sure that is an awesome choice. The good thing he is one of those actors who is completely different in everything he's in (ie. a good one) so it won't just be him as himself as the doctor. Tennet was the same. Slightly disappoint it isn't Matt Berry.

He was in the last last two episodes of the first season. I don't remember his role. Still, wouldn't be the first main actor to get a permanent spot after a one off appearance.

Collin Baker jokes that he got the job because he shot the previous Doctor.
