From Gizmodo... (http://gizmodo.com/5070851/xbox-360-netflix-hd-wont-work-on-non+hdcp-displays-maybe-even-old-xboxes)

Microsoft and Netflix are requiring that users of their swell little HD streaming service are connected to HDCP-compatible display. This potentially limits access for people who connect to older LCD screens via DVI, and maybe even owners of early optical output-only Xboxes, both of whom shall be referred to from now on as "THIIEEEVES!"

Well, not for me then...

I'm good but that sucks for anyone who isn't. :( I don't think they are going to have a whole lot of HD content for a while anyway.

I'm not good, and that has me frustrated. Neither my TV nor my Xbox is up to the task.

Oh well. SD will suffice for TV show streaming, I guess.

I'm good on the 360-side. However, my television is an old-ass StD set. :D

According to the article, it doesn't affect component cables. Guess I'm still okay. Still, this won't win either company any favors from the people who get shut out.

Didn't using the RGB D-sub connection bypass this with the HD-DVD drive?

Only if you use HDMI->DVI

Cool, I have component. I still want HDMI. I so wish that had included me.

Ugh. HDCP is the worst thing. It's fun having a TV that doesn't work with tons of stuff.

What about VGA users?

Older DVI monitors without HDCP aren't supported, so it turns out the issue only affects people trying to use HDMI-DVI - an output that the 360 doesn't support.

VGA is fine. Component is fine.

VGA and Component are analog standards and cannot ever support HDCP(which is a digital flag). HDCP is the one of the reason MS doesn't have a blu-ray addon. This news is unclear as to the state of older 360 users.

RephrasEdit: I meant to say that the news item doesn't state anything about older users with analog outputs, hence HDCP non-compliant, 360's

I doubt anyone with an older 360, that doesn't have HDMI, is using an HDMI-DVI adapter. Just a thought.

Joystiq and Engadget say this is not true and you can actually stream the HD content just fine over component cables.

HDCP is a flag that can only be transmitted over a digital connector. But this discussion is irrelevant. Seems like they're just punishing early HDTV adoptors for... being early adoptors.

Did you not bother reading any of the links that show this has nothing to do with digital versus analog? You can watch HD video over component, as was pointed out twice already.

DVI isn't a supported output format for the 360, so this is even more of a mountain out of a molehill than normal.

You really do not know much about what HDCP is do you? This means, in the simplest terms, you must use HDMI for the NetFlix streaming. More importantly, you will need to hack up a component cable dongle or buy an HDMI receiver for surround sound as the Xbox lacks an on board optical audio out.

The thing that most concerns me is that this is also being rolled out for the PC, will I need to completely rework my PC for HDCP compliancen hazzard a new sound card for the optical audio?

Early adoptors always get screwed. Really, anyone who doesn't know this by now, hasn't been paying attention.

HDMI is not required. This works over component.

I do not know of many sets supporting HDCP over component, none that I can think of. Unless the early reports on this were erronious and I missed it.

I cannot think of a set that supports HDCP over component. Has something been clarified by MS or Netflix that their content protection is not HDCP? Is it the same system MS designed for Amazon and Netflix.com?

This only affects those using older DVI inputs from their 360. Basically, this only becomes a problem if you are using a digital input that does not support HDCP. Analog inputs are unaffected.

Ok, I missed that. My main concern was that this Xbox part is the high profile roll out of Netflix Hd and its set top boxes. HDCP or bust would rule a lot of people out, meself included.

Good news, I do hate these "first" articles that tend to bury or muddy the lead.

Here's the thing. I'm not interested in pirating movies, THAT ARE ALREADY FUCKING PIRATED. If anything the XBL / NetFlix team up is one of the greatest efforts to THWART piracy, by offering a cheap subscription model, and now making it easy to use. This makes it substantially easier to get content CHEAP than hopping onto a torrent, downloading for days, burning it and hoping it works.

Further complicating this system "just in case" that will shut out any of their current customers is such a bonehead move

You don't like cruddy pirate videos anymore? The game isn't the same since Seinfeld stop putting in that work.

*It's a reference to a Seinfeld episode if you never watched the show. <shrug>
