View Full Version : Riddick: Dark Athena Still Coming, Now as an All New Game

Hearken back a few years, and you may remember this one. Back in the waning days of the original Xbox Starbreeze Studios released a Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay game onto the system. The game - more a side story than a movie tie-in - was actually great; better than the Riddick movie that followed it. But sales did not follow positive reviews, so Starbreeze announced that they would re-make the game as Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena for the then next, now current gen systems. That was back in late 2005. Since that time not a peep has been heard about the game, that is until today.
Atari has announced that they're publishing Dark Athena, but it's no longer just a remake, but also an entirely new game to boot. In addition to the remade Butcher Bay, there will also be an all new, original campaign - Assault on Dark Athena - as well as a full multiplayer mode.
Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena will be released this Spring on the Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and PC.

I've been waiting to hear something about this, thanks for posting the news!!

Awesome news, Riddick is easily one of my favorites from last gen.
Especially since this was on the list of games that Vivendi was cancelling during the merger with activision. I was heartbroken when I read that.

Never played it, but seeing as I love The Darkness I have high hopes for this.

Butcher Bay was great. I have a feeling this game will be sent out to die when it finally does come out.

Being one of 7 people in the world that LOVED the movie (and of course the game), I am always stoked to spend more time with one Richard B. Riddick.
Seriously people, the only version of The Chronicles of Riddick that should have ever existed is the extended Director's Cut. If you didn't like the theater release, watch the extended. It explains so much more about his Furian backstory and powers.
Ok, I'm done. :)

I'm one of the other six. Though i preferred the Theatrical cut, if only because the scene on Creamatoria played out better.
LOVED Butcher Bay, and was pretty well convinced that Dark Athena was dead and buried. This is amazing news!

Excellent news. Personally, I love the idea of including a remake of a great old game along with the new game. Imagine buying Metal Gear Solid IV only to get an HD version of Metal Gear Solid III for free. Or buying Fable II and getting an HD version of Fable I.

I passed up on Riddick last gen, but I won't make that mistake twice.
Is the first game BC? If so, I may need to pick it up and give it a proper run-through after hearing all the heaps of praise for it. This would at least give me an excuse to.

I'm pretty sure it's on the BC list, but not certain.

Sadly it isn't. I doubt it ever will be with a remake on the way.

One of the 5 or 6 games i held onto my old Xblock for. Brothers In Arms and Driver: Parallel Lines (i know! Shut up!) being the other few, and the UK Conan game.

Spring? Damn... when's that? Riddick was my favorite Xbox game and I've been waiting for this remake religiously.

I have Riddick on my shelf, unplayed...now, perhaps I'll just continue to wait, get the updated version when it's a bit cheaper than initial release, and be a happy camper! :)

god this is awesome
Sweet! Although i'd wish they would leave the multiplayer out, and just focus some more in singleplayer.

It is not backwards compatible unfortunately, however, I suggest playing it on the PC anyways. The graphics were absolutely top notch when it came out. They are still good even at today's standards. An excellent game, and I can't wait for the new one to come out being a huge fan of Pitch Black and CoR.

I missed the first one and always regretted not playing it.
This is good news in deed, but having Atari as the publisher makes me nervous. Their track record is pretty abysmal.

Number 5 here. Extended Cut was nice. :o

Not seeing any Otgoi on your list... Booo

Starbeeze hasn't had an issue with making a great single player and crappy multiplayer. I say let them keep trying, they might strike gold this time. I could see matches with a bunch of folks in the dark knifing folks. Have to design levels that's bright and dark. Have to be blind at some point, or wait around in the dark. Or a bunch of inmates trying to escape before the guards can kill them. I don't know, that's rough.

Could be awesome. I for one wish they hadn't cut MP from Enclave. I was really looking forward to MP skirmishes in that game.

Great news. I missed out the first time around and have been waiting on a remake. Really nice to hear of an addition to the game instead of a CUT.

That's how it always is. Some games get MP and there seems to be no reason for it and other games don't add it of any sort when it could actually bring something new and different to the multiplayer gameplay.

Ah good. I was disappointed to hear it was basically a remake, but it sounds like it may be worth a purchase now.

Hell for two games in one, sounds like even more than a purchase. I like want to run out and support Starbreeze day one, but I wish it got cheap as Darkness is so everyone can play. Or maybe more people to stop waiting around and support them. Keep em working.
Great news.... now really the only game im waiting that got cut was the Expansion pack for World in conflict....

I'll second that people should pick it up for PC if they want to play it. The graphics are still fantastic and it has extra content not seen in the Xbox version. There isn't any new info here aside from the fact that they're still making it, which I am SO glad to see because I really wanted the remake.

The original game, remade? Good. Extra campaign? Good. Awful tacked on multiplayer ala the Darkness? Not as good, but I'll live with it.

Hey, I'd have supported them if they released Darkness on PC. It's all their fault.

I'm gonna reiterate, if you haven't played the original yet, then do so as soon as possible. You will not be disappointed, I can pretty much guarentee it. Man that was one of the best games in it's time. I'm really looking forward to the new one and to see what new stuff they got in there. I love the lore of the series. Such a good story.
It's good to see so much CoR love here, I thought I was the only person with love for it!
How could Conan in space not be great.
The game was awesome and I'm a "day oner" for Athena.

I never thought of Riddick as Conan in space, but after thinking about it I guess it makes sense. They took that idea a bit too far with the second movie, however. In any case, the game and Pitch Black are great, so that's how I remember the series.
