View Full Version : The Tomb of Canceled Games

So many games get canceled, I thought there should be a place to discuss some of the more interesting titles that, for whatever reason, never made it out the door.
I'll start off with one that I, and many others, was really looking forward to.
Simsville
bCshVvzD4QY
Planned for release not too long after the original The Sims title, Simsville was a step between Sim City and the The Sims. Instead of managing a huge city or an individual house you took care of a growing town, trying to influence your Sims with a system that sounded similar to the fantasy simulator Majesty. Rather than directly controlling your residents you had to get them interested and involved in buildings and events while they followed their desires and goals.
Viewed as too close in concept to both the old and new tentpoles of the Sim family, Simsville was canceled and its features eventually absorbed into both Sim City 4 and future The Sims titles. The Sims 3 is terribly close to what Simsville looked like it would be, minus more direct control over the businesses and non-residential lots in a neighborhood.
I remember being very excited about this game and disheartened by its cancellation, but seeing what they've done with The Sims franchise I can understand how Simsville would have been crowded out and eventually smothered by its incredibly successful and ever-expanding sibling.

Speaking of my old tester job at Acclaim Entertainment, shortly before they went bankrupt they were working on two comic book licensed games for the PS2 and Xbox.
The first was The Red Star, a combination side-scrolling brawler and bullet-hell shooter with co-op play. It was actually good and almost complete when the company went under, so it was eventually picked up and released by another company.
The second game, based on the crime-noir series 100 Bullets, wasn't as lucky. Borrowing heavily from third-person shooters like Max Payne, it was filled with bullet-time, cover mechanics, gun-fu, and heavy violence. If I recall correctly, the story was actually going to be written by Brian Azzarello as a side-plot that wouldn't affect the full canon. You'd play as Cole Burns and a female character created just for the game, Snow Falls.
I only played a few levels, and watched some more, but it wasn't looking all that hot at the time, suffering from poor animation and rough controls. Perhaps that would've been smoothed out before release but we'll never know. Wikipedia says Keanu Reeves was tapped to voice Cole in the game, so it's probably for the best that it was never released.

That's Snow Falls in the beginning, the one with the huge snow drifts.

Frame City Killer was probably one of my most anticipated games for the 360 when it was announced. It sounded like a great combination of Hitman and GTA with a very large open ended world where you had to stalk your hit and learn their habits/routines before moving in for the kill. Pity that it was cancelled, but every video I ever saw looked terrible.
My own personal picks would be Chakan and the Streets of Rage scheduled for the Dreamcast.
Talisman for Xbox live still pulls at the ol' heartstrings too.

It's just...so hard to let go.
I remember the announcement. I was a heavy regular at SGD back in those days, which was super unpopulated for an official forum. One day, a Blizzard man posted a new thread.
There will be an announcement on this date. I have since forgotten which date that was.
Anyway, they put up a countdown. As the countdown neared zero, an unclear image became more and more clear. As it did so, and as I watched it (along with the crashing of the site), it became a picture of Nova.
StarCraft: Ghost was announced. I sat at home all evening watching that countdown to go zero. I even remember what I ate...two corndogs. Dragon Ball Z was also on TV.
That was before life got complicated.
That was before my heart was broken.

I may be carbon-dating myself, but I wanted Champions the computer game so badly! It was based on the pen-and-paper RPG of the same name (Actually used the HERO system (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hero_System)) which had the BEST system for creating powers. I played the RPG at the time with friends, and the computer game sounded like it would capture all of the detail of the RPG.
Champions
The origins of the superhero curse began with Champions, published by Hero Games. This was the game that was based on the popular pen and paper roleplaying series. That pen and paper series is still played today and is arguably the most popular superhero RPG, outstripping the licensed Marvel and DC systems. Then in 1990 Hero Games formed Hero Software to begin work on a PC version of the pen and paper game.
The game design was promising enough to get Champions featured in a cover story in Computer Gaming World magazine. Players could use pre-made heroes or create their own from Champions skill-based system, and could even design their own costumes. Combat was to be turn-based from an isometric perspective as players would play the game in an episodic manner by playing individual adventures that were to be strung together to form a complete game. The game was to feature random encounters as well, and players would even get to create a secret identity for their heroes. It all sounded great and game fans were intrigued.
So what went wrong? A couple of things according to Steve Peterson, one of the founders of Hero Games. "Superhero games are more open-ended than traditional RPGs. You have so much more to account for when you're creating the game, because players will expect to be able to do anything in the game world that they see happen in a comic." In the end the game seemed beyond the scope of Hero Games, which had never created a computer game before, and the two lead programmers who were married to each other went through a divorce as well. The game was abandoned.

Dark Phoenix. Was one of the originally announced "Capcom Five" for the GC. Looked great, as I love freeform aerial shooters (shame what happened to Warhawk:p), but went nowhere. The rest of those games were great. Yes, even that PE05 one.

Which version? They reworked it about 2 or 3 times if I'm not mistaken.
This was the Nihilistic version. The gameplay was all right, but the art looked like hell - to a point where an in-game cutscene showed a low-poly Siege Tank up close blowing up. It was awful - giant cubes slowly coming apart amidst some of the worst particle work I'd ever seen. I couldn't help myself, it just came out: "Oh my God, I'd NEVER show that at E3." I turn to my left and there's a guy, scowling at me, with a Nihilistic E3 badge on. I open my mouth to say something, then I thought better of it and just left.
Shortly after that E3, I heard that Nihilistic was no longer working on the title. I don't think Ghost has been seen publicly since, but I could be wrong about that.
EDIT: Totally wrong. Swingin' Ape's version was at E3 2005.

This is an extremely long shot, but perhaps the upcoming space combat in Halo: Reach will spawn a new interest in space combat. Like you, I would love to see a new Freespace or Wing Commander. Project Sylpheed for the 360 is really good. Super console-y, yes, but it has massive battles and a ton of weapons. You feel like a badass near the end of the game, and it encourages you to play through multiple times to win battles by more and more. Plus you can slow down time, which I always forget.

Rumor has it that Ironclad's next title might be a space combat game. That would be pretty damn awesome if true. There's also Eve Online and the X games, although they focus more on trading.

When did they make another Dungeon keeper? Or "Dungeons"

While I'm by no means a hater of the franchise (not even close), every time I see that old Macworld Halo trailer, I'm reminded that I still want that game more than any current or future Halo game.

Fear Effect: Inferno
I was coming in to name these two, with Fear Effect being the one I'm most saddened by. But I'll also add:
The Agency
Agent (though not officially canceled, I have a feeling it may be)
LA Noire (ditto)

You realise that The Agency hasn't been cancelled either, right? Although I reckon that if we do ever see it, it'll be some kind of team-based shooter with nary a MMO element in sight.

Yeah. If I recall it was also supposed to be a real game that got cancelled. They just used the assets for marketing for the game as well.

IIRC, it was put on indefinite hold and not a peep has been heard since last year when it was supposed to have come out this year (http://www.mcvuk.com/news/33705/Sony-dates-PS3-MMO-duo-for-2010). But recent events (http://www.gamespot.com/news/6269171.html) led me to believe that it was canned, but that was all internet speculation so who knows. I'm not nearly as up on this type of stuff as any of you, so my thoughts on these matters should always be suspect.

Ditto, but in some cases silence isn't golden, and that article was back in February and AFAIK nothing has been heard since. It was due this year. :(

I forgot all about Faith & A .45! That reminded me of a few other canceled games that are just on the other side of my brain where I can't quite see them.
I know, for example, that Nintendo has canceled a number of games, but none of them have been mentioned yet in this thread. Minus that Zelda trailer that I posted, which was supposedly never an actual title in development.

There was a PvP teaser released around E3 that I only discovered about a week ago. There's also a Facebook game, which is pretty fun until it starts hitting typical FB game limits (as in, you can only get five minutes of play every few hours unless you fork out real monies, so fuck that shit.)
I very much doubt that we'll see the game as intended, but I have a feeling it'll be released as yet another team-based MP shooter that we don't need.

We don't even know anything about Agent, yet, do we? Other than that it's on the PS3 and they drew up a logo?
As for Fear Effect, it's dead, but with it being an Eidos property, and them being bought by Square Enix, I wouldn't totally rule out a new Fear Effect. If nothing else SE loves to revive old franchises (see: Tactics Ogre).

The original ROM for Starfox 2 was not complete and riddled with bugs.
Someone out there actually fixed them so that the game could be played, and finished the translation so that the game could be played to completion.
There's a fixed ROM out there these days. I don't have it personally, but I have played it. I don't think it's as good of a game as the original or 64, but I can assure you it's much better than Starfox Assault.

Very, very true. Though I have to admit Starfox Adventures is a game that I have something of a soft spot for. I don't know why. Maybe it's because it was amazing looking for its time, if not all that great to actually play. If the cut back the fetch-questing even by just a little bit, it would've been enjoyable. Rare had this problem back then of making you take every fetch quest to its utmost extreme in order to proceed, and that's NO GOOOOD.
A little fetching to advance the story with the option of doing more for acheivements is OK with me. Having to find every single piece of this or that no matter what - irritating!

No Regret was more of an expansion than a sequel, which was why they were calling the next game Crusader 2 (dev's working title, not something I made up). Sure, it was stand alone, but outside of a some graphical additions (not upgrades) and a weapon or two, it was the exact same game.
And yes, you can roll (in both of them) but this was going to be more of a fluid combat roll, not the stop-crouch-roll thing you got in the first two games. I still remember at the back of the instruction booklet for No Regret, they had a frame-by-frame sprite graphic of this new roll move along with a blurb for what they were planning for Crusader 2.

That looks freakin' sweet. I may have to track that ROM down. As far as the series goes I thought Star Fox DS was the worst one, I liked Assault. It had it's negatives but I thought the positives greatly outweighed them.

Hey hey now, I'm having a hell of a lot more fun playing VA than I ever did playing God of War III or FF XIII. The game could go to shit from this point on and I'd still personally rank it much higher than some other games that get better sales/ratings/talkups.
