Deep Silver is considering WiiMotionPlus support. (N-Europe (http://www.n-europe.com/news.php?nid=12559))

Issue #30 of NGamer features a hands-on with Deep Silver's creepy caper and includes a few more details on the controls of Cursed Mountain. Wii Remote gestures will be used to act out rituals and use prayer scrolls in order to defeat ghosts and allow them to move on to the underworld. As we'll be assuming the role of a climber, gestures will also be used to scale frozen walls with an icepick.

The hands-on also features confirmation that the developers are considering implenting Wii MotionPlus support into Cursed Mountain to allow for more accurate motion recognition.

A new preview (http://wii.ign.com/articles/927/927348p1.html) from IGN.

The world in which the main character explores is large, multi-tiered and can to be seen in whole from certain vantage points. At one stop, the character peered over an edge and we took in a vast trail stretching outward behind him -- the same path we'd hiked up. In the upward distance, we spotted the huge mountains, all of which can be travelled to. Indeed, as a general rule, you're always trying to go up, and up, and up some more, so if you get lost, all you need do is look around the game world -- if the path slopes down, you're probably going the wrong way. In addition, some of the texturing and lighting skinning the environments looked good; some still needed some polish. And some of the particle effects, particularly in the spirit-infested shadow world, looked excellent.

The demo we saw began in a monastery as the main character searched through the area in a desperate attempt to unlock more information about his brother's whereabouts. The title regularly calls upon establishing shots to set the mood, so you will see big, sweeping views of stone walkways curving through the mountain even before you make the trek up them. When you walk up a second set of stairs, the camera angle will dynamically change and birds will fly by in the background. Based on what we saw, it looked pretty good, although we're hoping that the mood is heightened by consistently crisp and varied texture design and even more particle effects. You will be drowning in them when you make the jump to the shadow world, but we never spotted an overwhelming amount of snowfall during normal exploration. The game also lacks a dynamic day / night system, but it does feature areas set to both.

And some details on the controls:

Control his handled with the nunchuk's analog stick. If you hold down the C button, you'll run. Press the Z button and you'll flip 180 degrees. You can go into a first-person view and look around if you tap down on the D-Pad. And the A button is your executable, confirming commands, opening doors, etc. There is more to it, of course, including some waggle. At one point in the demo, the mountaineer finds himself stuck in an icy glacier and quickly recovers a pickaxe off a dead hiker. You can then make climbing motions with the Wii remote and nunchuk in order to stab the tool into the ice and pull the character out of the freezing cavity. This process was still a little unresponsive in the demo, but we're sure Deep Silver will refine it before release, if it hasn't already.

How will things change with Wii MotionPlus? We'll see...There is a battle system, but it has nothing to do with guns. Rather, as you explore, ghosts appear out of a black, swirling wind that hovers toward you. This is a representation of the spirit world or Bardo and you can go there simply by holding the B-Trigger. Inside, you will see a clearer view of the entities, which emit symbols from their centers. You must first point to these symbols -- they're actually written prayers or rituals -- with the Wii remote to get a lock-on and then make the signs shown on-screen with your controller. If you're successful, the souls will be freed, so you're not so much killing them as helping them find the true afterlife. The problem is that they still don't look to happy about it. And some of the giant, almost mythical figures we encountered in the spirit world -- flying toward us with enormous wings, for example -- gave us pause about being such nice guys.

As I don't have a Wii I won't be picking this up, but I really dig those screens. When I first got info on this and saw some images it really didn't do much for me but passed the info onto a friend who has a Wii and digs the horror genre. But the style and look of those above caps are really smooth. Makes me feel a little worse for not owning a Wii. But only a little.

A preview (http://www.officialnintendomagazine.co.uk/article.php?id=6959) from Official Nintendo Magazine(UK).

Cursed Mountain is an adventure game with survival horror elements set in the Himalayas. You play as a climber who sets out to scale a huge mountain in order to try and find his missing brother. As he climbs the mountain, he finds himself caught up in an ancient curse and ends up fighting for his life against all sorts of ghosts and demons.

The idea is that these ghosts are the spirits of climbers and monks who have died in the region but are stuck in limbo, wandering throughout the Shadow World. At times during the game these ghosts will appear visible to you and you'll have to defeat them by making special prayer gestures with the Wii Remote and Nunchuk. Different motions have different attack and defence actions, so you need to learn which work best against certain types of spirit.

There are also some nice set-pieces included in the game which make full use of the Wii's abilities. At one point you find yourself trapped in a cave, where you find a walkie talkie. When you pick it up, a voice starts talking to you through the Remote's speakers, as if you were actually holding the walkie talkie, and guides you through the cave.

The game's also set in the '80s, which we were told was a deliberate move by the developers to avoid the inevitable "why doesn't he just call someone on his mobile" questions that would no doubt spring up. With limited technology available, this certainly won't be an easy adventure.

Wait, do people really think that a niche horror game about a tibetan monestary on the WII is going to sell like hotcakes?

If the game is good, which I hope it is, then it would be great if it sells a few units but just from the basic premise alone you know that this is a title destined for a Turning The Spigot column.

I think the best this game can hope for is a lot of word of mouth, again, assuming it's actually going to live up to the coolness of its premise...

First impressions from Gamekult (http://www.gamekult.com/articles/A0000074587/).

Google Translation:

Frankly not willing to ignore the new and exclusive games, the Wii is already preparing his spikes and his jacket in preparation for the arrival of a Cursed Mountain. Developed by Deep Silver Vienna, this survival horror takes place in the heart of the vastness of the Himalayas and will seek to explore the hidden dark side and Buddhist beliefs. Attractive and unique background, good ideas abound ... Cursed Mountain is preparing its long climb on Wii with equipment a priori very solid. Otherwise reach the summits?

Although its release date is still unclear, Deep Silver Vienna trépignait already lifted a little more light on his work. For nearly an hour, we discovered an early draft of this production exclusively for the Wii. And it is in a rather strange that we have traveled since Cursed Mountain takes place in the heart of the Himalayas, a hostile and mysterious. It follows the footsteps of Frank Simons to find his brother mysteriously disappeared in the region for several weeks. Listening that his courage and guided by an instinct almost fraternal strange, our man will embark on an expedition to the least dangerous: the ascent of a mountain that local Buddhist legends say haunted. The scenario of Cursed Mountain can be easily caught in meandering paranormal, the leading player in the midst of evil spirits that have failed to reach beyond and continue to as long as they can disrupt the world of humans.

For now, Cursed Mountain is still a long way to go. Nevertheless, the foundations have been well raised and suggests a survival horror with the very important. Deep Silver Vienna included a lot of research on Buddhism and well completely permeate its title. Franck, left to itself in the mountain vastness confusing, should therefore be wary of all this environment that deleterious evil spirits wandering here and there. When he concentrates, he can, indeed, access to what appears to be an alternate reality, parallel, bathed in a mist of black may arise where species zombies friendly little phases when the spirit quite close Project Zero. The admission of Deep Silver Vienna, the fighting is still under consideration and work. In this version, to get rid of monsters, it should perform certain specific rituals. Form of QTY, thus moving on Wiimote and Nunchuk by following the instructions on the screen until you see the target disappear eventually to a better world.

As evidenced by this system of combat, the developers, it seems, had a heart to seek to exploit the capabilities of seriously duo Wiimote / Nunchuk. In addition to the passages deal with monsters, Cursed Mountain will force us to mimic the use of ice picks to climb a steep wall in physical meetings climbing, for example. The game has so much to legitimize its Wii exclusive. And, a priori, the implementation is a party on the same path. Although still quite empty, the sets already emerging promising atmosphere, enhanced by the effects of particles very successful, as we announced managed in real time by a physics engine house and give life to a blizzard and mist quite realistic. After this first contact with the game, one is forced to acknowledge that Deep Silver does not seem to run out of ideas and ambitions for this original production. Therefore hope that the Viennese take their time to polish it up and in particular provide sufficient pace and challenge in this adventure, vaguely announced for this year, so.

Press release. (GoNintendo (http://gonintendo.com/viewstory.php?id=86218))

Hermosa Beach, Calif. - June 16, 2009 - On the official Cursed Mountain website, Deep Silver opens the gate to the first stop during the ascent of Mt.Chomolonzo in the Himalayas. What traces did Eric Simmons leave in the village at the foot of the mountain during the search for his brother? Postcards from his grueling trip, diary entries and video material speak of the dangers Eric encounters while climbing Mt.Chomolonzo. The documents surrounding his journey can be viewed at http://cursedmountain.deepsilver.com

About Cursed Mountain:

Set in the late 1980s, gamers will take on the role of a fearless mountaineer as he climbs into the Himalayas on a quest to find his lost brother. As he ascends the mountain, he encounters an ancient curse: the souls of the people who died in that region are stuck in limbo, caught in the Shadow World. Villagers, pilgrims, mountaineers and Buddhist monks - dead but not yet reincarnated - are all that is left on the mountain.

Terrible visions will disorient him, and ghosts and demons block his path. But the question remains - is his brother still alive?

Cursed Mountain is set to be released in 2009.

1. Shinay bardo (Tibetan): is the first bardo of birth and life. This bardo commences from conception until the last breath, when the mindstream withdraws from the body.

2. Milam bardo (Tibetan): is the second bardo of the dream state. The Milam Bardo is a subset of the first Bardo. Dream Yoga develops practices to integrate the dream state into Buddhist sadhana.

3. Samten bardo (Tibetan) is the third bardo of meditation. This bardo is generally only experienced by meditators, though individuals may have spontaneous experience of it. Samten Bardo is a subset of the Shinay Bardo.

4. Chikkhai bardo (Tibetan): is the fourth bardo of the moment of death. According to tradition, this bardo is held to commence when the outer and inner signs presage that the onset of death is nigh, and continues through the dissolution or transmutation of the Mahabhuta until the external and internal breath has completed.

5. Chönyid bardo (Tibetan): is the fifth bardo of the luminosity of the true nature which commences after the final 'inner breath' (Sanskrit: prana, vayu; Tibetan: rlung). It is within this Bardo that visions and auditory phenomena occur. In the Dzogchen teachings, these are known as the spontaneously manifesting Thödgal (Tibetan: thod-rgyal) visions. Concomitant to these visions, there is a welling of profound peace and pristine awareness. Sentient beings who have not practiced during their lived experience and/or who do not recognize the clear light (Tibetan: od gsal) at the moment of death are usually deluded throughout the fifth bardo of luminosity.

6. Sidpai bardo (Tibetan): is the sixth bardo of becoming or transmigration. This bardo endures until the inner-breath commences in the new transmigrating form determined by the 'karmic seeds' within the storehouse consciousness.

Sky Burial (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sky_burial): Sky burial or ritual dissection was once a common funerary practice in Tibet wherein a human corpse is cut in specific locations and placed on a mountaintop, exposing it to the elements or the mahabhuta and animals – especially to birds of prey. In Tibetan the practice is known as jhator (Tibetan: བྱ་གཏོར་; Wylie: bya gtor), which literally means, "giving alms to the birds."

The majority of Tibetans adhere to Buddhism, which teaches rebirth. There is no need to preserve the body, as it is now an empty vessel. Birds may eat it, or nature may let it decompose. So the function of the sky burial is simply the disposal of the remains. In much of Tibet the ground is too hard and rocky to dig a grave, and with fuel and timber scarce, a sky burial is often more practical than cremation.

Slightly OT, but it's a fucking travesty that Nintendo won't publish Fatal Frame 4 outside Japan.

Don't worry. I'm working on it. :o
