View Full Version : Seriously.. WTF (Raptr)

So after Bap spammed me with raptr, I decided to sign up and check it out. Decided to see if it would check my email list to see if any friends were on it, and it did so. I honestly didn't even click it the send to contacts button.. perhaps a glitch in the matrix?

It freaking sent an invite to all 300 of my contacts. That really pisses me off and will make me never use it. Quite embarrassing seeing as I used that email for work and school...

it even sent out like 50 emails to every single newegg, amazon, zzp, etc support email / whatever I had ever contacted as well as any other merchant. Great, might as well mark my email as spam forever now.

That's funny. I read this before I checked my email.

I apologize to everyone who got my raptr crap. It appears the site decided to email my entire address book. about 15 hours ago from digsby.

Twitter ftw.

Almost every social site these days has that functionality, though to varying degrees. I've never seen one that actually sends an email to every one of your contacts, through. That's damned lame. But I always bypass that part of the process, anyways, just because I can never be sure what they're going to do with the email addresses of all my friends and acquaintances.

Yeah, I got that from bap as well, and I had a feeling it was one of those "mass spam" things. I'm not sure why sites feel it's a good thing to do.

Bigger question: Is Raptr worth my time?

I got an invite from bappy. Signed up and selected who I sent an invitation to. It was not an automated mass-spam setup for me. I have over 100 contacts in my Gmail account, but it allowed me to select the ones I invited.

Sorry, zrikz - sounds like you might have missed an option or button along the way. That royally sucks that it happened. :(

I just signed up.

It asks you for both the login and password for your email first. While it does select all of your contacts after you give them your login info, they also give you the option to deselect all.

Looks like it's your own fault, as much as that sucks.

Yeah I logged in of course, but the only thing I did was click on Doctor Setebos name, because it said he was registered... next thing I know, I just emailed 300 people. I never touched the damn send to contact button.

So basically you logged into your email account - which was pretty clear, since they had a different login for every email service - and then clicked "Send and continue" without actually reading the page itself, which clearly said "Invite friends"?

Um no, if you read my post correctly you would see that.

1. I Logged into gmail through their site to see friends who are currently registered.. yey!
2. See currently registered friends: one (Setebos)
3. Click Doctor Setebos Name (NOT "Send and Continue")

4. ??
5. 300 Emails are sent out.

That is odd. In defense of Raptr, though, it is still in beta. It sucks donkey balls that it happened to you.

Not really that big of a deal I guess.. just very annoying. Had a couple people contact me that I hadn't heard from in like a year which was kinda cool.

on the down side, I had to send emails to all of my previous / present professors / school admission offices saying I'm dumb.

What is this Raptr?

And more importantly: Is it devoted to destroying dinosaurs?

I'm sure your professors really appreciated you emailing them to tell then you're dumb. :)

Nope, not that I'm aware of. Given Zrikz's post I don't think anyone would fess up anyway.

I was going to send you a what the fuck e-mail about that, but now all is explained.

Pro tip: Don't turn your service into a zombie net, and people might use it.

Social networking for gamers. About 12 years too late, and since Facebook supports X-fire, Even more useless.

This was Raph Koster' one right?

I signed up and did not spam all of my friends with the service. As others said, the option was in front of me and I chose not to send it to my contact list. In zrikz defense, I'll give him that the service is in beta and maybe it just pooped a little. Bad Raptr! Bad! NO!

In Raptr's defense, it's a cool little service that is like a combination of Steam + Facebook. It ties together your Steam, Xbox Live, PS3, Wii (!), Guitar Hero, Warhammer, and WoW accounts and creates a Facebook/Twitter-like feed of what you and your friends are doing in games and what achievements they earn.

I just searched my email.. apparently I sent you a LOTR Beta key like a year ago. Contact list = anyone I have ever emailed in my life according to gmail.

Now they make those people "suggested contacts" and your contacts should only include people you added or email a lot.

Would be a neat idea...set up a widget on this site, and have it pull from everyone's online activities...kind of like a feed of what everyone logged onto this site is playing...

Dude, I'd be pissed if a site used my name to spam one of my professors.

That's EXACTLY what happened to me. It pissed me the fuck off to no end.

I ended up opening a couple of support tickets to places I did in the past like my ISP, Fedex, Newegg, etc.

It sent it to places where I had submitted my resume in the past.

It went to my boss, my mom, and some co-workers.

And it went to every media contact I've ever made in the gaming industry.

Ugh. It was a cleanup nightmare as people replied to me and kept going "what's this?"

See,the problem is the email addresses are all hidden below the fold on anything 1280x1024 and below. At least for me it was. I had about 6 or 7 contacts in it already and that pushed the email list below my screen.

What I thought was the send and continue button was to send the friend request to those friends it found, not EVERYBODY else.

Ugh. It was a cleanup nightmare as people replied to me and kept going "what's this?"

Yeah, that was fun.. so far I've only had around 5-6 people email me with WTF.. I opened like 5 support tickets myself.. bleh. Ended up doing a mass email to everyone @my school email address apologizing and letting the rest email me later.

But! I'm finally over my anger and decided to give it a shot. Its such a cool concept that I just cant pass it up, so everyone should add Zrikz if your using it =/

Oh and to Heretic, it used my name Zrikz as the signature, looks like a weird name, so I actually had a couple people email me like, um did spam take over your email? And I was like umm.. yes ;p
