View Full Version : Bethesda: If You're Good You'll Get a New Elder Scrolls in 2010

Bethesda wants you to remember that just because they're focusing so much right now on Fallout 3, they haven't forgotten their other major property. Bethesda exec Paul Oughton says that the company's return to the Elder Scrolls - the universe Oblivion and Morrowind are set in - will probably be in our hot little hands around 2010.
Oughton also dashed any possibility of seeing Bethesda's games on the Wii, saying that the company's focus right now is on the PC, 360 and PS3.

And I still haven't finished Oblivion. Or bought/started Shivering Isles. Or bought Fallout 3. I can wait.

I wish I had the patience for Oblivion. Fallout 3 has promise since it's O with guns :).
I never played any of the Elder Scrolls but i'll buy it and put it next to Oblivion collecting dust...

2010? Sounds good. 2009 will be all about Fallout 3. The past two years have been all about Oblivion in my house.

I hope the next one is more like Morrowind than Oblivion. I thought Oblivion was a good game, but it really felt incomplete when compared to the depth and scope of Morrowind.

I can't wait. I love the Elder Scroll series despite all their problems. This is probably my most anticipated game for 2010. I just hope they improve the cities and towns to make the AI seem a little more alive and add some progressive missions that keep renewing themselves. And as I'm dreaming the combat could use some tweaking as could enemies there just wasn't enough of them in Oblivion unless you added the monster mods. Some things need to be a bit more like Morrowind.

That's pretty much what I feel. I missed the diversity in the landscapes, architecture and creatures in Oblivion.

Well, the country you were in in Oblivion was land of the white people.
The most important thing is that they get rid of that progressive leveling nonsense.

Get a new Creature Art Designer and I am all over this.
Seriously...the art design on some of the creatures is horrid.
Ok I am going to be all over this anyway but man I could wish.
I have honestly never finished Oblivion. I'm some 70 hours in an I've maybe done a handful of the main storyline quests. I just love running around and exploring the world and seeing what trouble I can get myself into that I sometimes forget there's that to be working on. Not that I'm complaining in any way (love the game), I just tend to get distracted very easily when playing it. Part of that was due to the gates as I loathed them.
But yeah, would love another one but for now: Fallout's where it's at.

Yeah I understand that but you get rid of a lot of the feeling that you are exploring if the places you go to are all very similar. I know that it's justified in the gameworld but that doesn't change the fact that one felt exciting and the other didn't to the same extent.

I wish I had played the old Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall when it came out. I tried playing it a couple years back and I just couldn't get into that kind of old-school gaming again.
I'm looking forward to another Elder Scrolls, as I enjoyed the little bit of Oblivion that I played, and am loving Fallout 3 at the moment, so I'm sure they can deliver.

The progressive leveling was ridiculous and fortunately was one of the first things to be fixed by mods.
I should probably mention that although Morrowind was one of my favorite games of all time, it wasn't because of Bethesda, per se. The game as shipped was a pretty decent game, but it was really the mods and modders that made it fantastic in my mind. Oblivion was also a mediocre game that was improved upon by the community, but unfortunately they took some core elements of Morrowind out of the game so that not even the modders could fix it.
If you can make the toolset as sandbox-like as the game is, then everyone can add mods to make it their own perfect game. That's the real brilliance behind these titles, if you ask me.

This is pretty much how I feel as well. A lot of Oblivion felt a bit bland to me. It was still great, and I still enjoyed it, but I just missed a lot of what Morrowind offered.

Actually the best part of these games are the "emergent" gameplay, to use a buzz word. My best memories of hundreds of hours of Oblivion (and already some in FO3) are shit that wasn't planned happening. I didn't need the tools to do that.

QFT, that is exactly my current position with Oblivion. I played more than 70 hours, closer to 100, since I put in 30-40 hours first and then realised I had made some really bad decisions, restarted and then played 70 hours with the new character. I finished the Main quest but I still have lots of other quests left. I spent 5-6 months playing Oblivion and I think if I went back, I could spend another 6 months on it. It is that vast!
Where I really, really hope Bethesda improve TES:V is the storyline. They need to come up with a really awesome, jaw-dropping, mind-bending, nail-biting story that keeps the heart-rate up. Something Oblivion really missed sorely. For all the awesomeness of the open gameworld, it had a really shallow and flimsy story. Furthermore I wished the guild-quest career paths somehow tied into the mainquest. They were just too cool (especially the Dark Brotherhood) to not be part of the story.
I wished the story had a more central role in Oblivion and the changes in it had greater impact than "It's an honour to meet you Champion".
I think my main gripe with Oblivion was that it played a little too much like a singleplayer MMO, I want tighter, more streamlined story-driven gameplay but without sacrificing the open-world. They need to figure out how to give me that and TES:V will be perfect!

Well, the problem is - they know how to do that, and the answer is longer development time and more money.

What I really want in the next Elder Scrolls: more high level weapons and loot. After about the half-way point in Oblivion I essentially stopped getting better items. I'd occasionally get different items, but I stopped getting better items.

Seriously? One of the first things I did in the game was head to Balmora. I still remember the trip through the canyon vividly, and stumbling into a cave with an Ashen Ghoul that almost lit me up before I got out of there.
I was having fun in Morrowind right from the start.

Well, yeah, it is. I put 125+ hours into Oblivion and I've still got more to go. I did a shit ton of exploring. I only ever closed the first Oblivion gate and completed the Thieves Guild quest line. I'm just getting started on the Mage's Guild.
After the Fall rush is over it's one of the games I plan on going back to.

I'm enjoying Fallout 3 far more than Oblivion. If they can keep at least the story quality of Fallout 3 and actually make the gameplay engaging then it could be awesome. But then it could be a horrid mess. Bethesda is a studio I have little faith in.

Its funny how so many people here just mention morrowind and oblivion as the elder scroll series....I'm one of those guys that played arena and daggerfall as well....arena was a chance buy at futureshop.
All good games in their own right, and they have changed so much over the years.
I'm good for more elder scrolls for sure, I never beat oblivion but I can tell you I spent 100 hours having fun and thats all that really matters right?

Oblivion got really boring once you were done with all the guilds and the main quest which didn't really take that long. I hope they can make the rest of the game as fun.

I think a lot of people have played Arena and Daggerfall, but I don't see what they did better in Daggerfall that I would like them to apply to the next one other than a feeling of loneliness and maybe mist. For me Morrowind was an improvement on Daggerfall in just about every way whereas with Oblivion I feel that some things where done better in Morrowind.
Well morrowind also had what 7 years of technology to be better than daggerfall... I dont know morrowind and oblivian just never grabbed me as much as dagger fall did back when it came out. Course getting bit by a vampire or werewolf almost made you unkillable but hey....

I have yet to pick up Oblivion. Shameful I know.
I spent a lot of time with Morrowind and barely scratched the surface of what the game had to offer. There were a lot of issues to be sure - things that will hopefully be addressed in a fifth game.
I'm looking forward to playing both Fallout 3 and Oblivion soon.

As has been said, ditch the autolevelling shit, and go back to some of the more Morrowind feeling stuff, which I preferred. And having more than two voice actors and better animators and such would, well, not irritate me so much!
A bit more flexibility as to how conversations are held (sad to see that remains in Fallout 3 but I'll see how that is...) would be nice...

I have both Morrowind(xbox) and Oblivion(360), marinating on a shelf. I really want to get into them. I got a good ways in Morrowind, but I was robbed one night I slept behind a building. I was pretty pissed and thought it was a bug. I should have taken it as a motivation to be more ruthless with those ass holes. :o

I easily put 300 hours into Oblivion. I loved that game, the only problem I had with it was once you played through it once there was really no reason to go back to it. I've tried and can't. When the Shivering Isles expansion came out I loved that as well and played through it on both sides. I just wish they hadn't made it so that you could just be everything all at once. There was no replay value. Don't get me wrong, 300 hours is more then enough time to play a game, but I kinda wanted to go through it again. By the end though I was the Champion of Cyradill, the leader of the Mage/Assassin/Theif/Fighters Guilds. I had almost all of my stats maxed. Then after Shivering Isles I was literally a God. Really no real reason to go through and start over.
I'm really enjoying Fallout 3 right now. I see me playing it several times too. Knowing the level cap is at 20 I'll probably play through it at least 3 times. I'm really looking forward to the next TES and 2010 sounds like a good time. Should give me enough time to get through Fallout 3 and some other games. Dead Space, Fable 2, Silent Hill, Resident Evil 5, the list goes on and on.

Morrowind ate me alive back in the day, I killed months of my life with that game.

I got tired of Oblivion pretty quickly. I'm in no way saying the game was bad however. Morrowind just felt...right, to me. I played Morrowind a whole lot more than I played Oblivion. Hell, I still have Morrowind installed and Oblivion has been gone for a while now.
