UPDATE: The CoG corp isn't really active as of December 2010. It seems most CoG who are active are doing their own thing, which is awesome. However, most of them still hang out in the "CoG" channel and if you play, you should too!

I was in the EvAv corp for a while, then I quit and I started back up a few weeks back. I'm just running missions and training currently, but would love to join up asap.

Also just a heads up, I'll also probably be closing down the Evil Eye corp, since no one participates in FW there any more, and only a few of us log-in. Anyone who really really wants to participate in FW can always join up with the individual NPC FW corps in the interim. :)

Nah, I've been playing EVE off and on for the past four years, I always seem to be dabbling in it no matter what. Might as well make have a place for any CoG'ers to gather should they want to play :) I'm still playing other things, I assure you!
I just couldnt get any real momentum going in EVE. I enjoyed it but I got nowhere. This does seem to be a recurring thing for me and MMO's though and I dont quite understand why.

Now going to have to relearn PvP with all the speed/mwd/web/scrambler changes. Should be interesting, hopefully.

After seeing the ad for the new expansion on Steam I decided to sign up for a free trial account.
My only experience with EVE is playing the free month that came with the original boxed version way back, so for all intents and purposes, I'm a complete newb.
Any tips for starting out? The client is 90% downloaded, and I assume there will be a lengthy patch process, so I have time to read up and will be doing a bit of that.
I'll let you know my name etc once I get started.

I'll be applying to the corp next time I log in (char: Kerath Verennas). Odd, I've been doing a search on the forum every day or two since we talked in evemail about you starting a new corp. Never did anything show up. I only saw this thread because the other thread that linked to this one showed up in the sidebar. heh.

I assume the game picks up a bit later on?In general, yes, though you can always be doing something productive whether it's mining a bit, trading or doing missions. You need a decent amount of ISK to even purchase the later skill books, so just waiting until your character is more fleshed out to start playing for "real" doesn't always work out.

I really need to get on when other people are on or post my skill chart and find someone willing to walk me through what I need to train so I can get a stronger ship / better weapons.
I've been training skills for like 3 months kinda randomly.
Post the skill chart here, there's plenty of people who can give out advice on what to train.
I really, really want to play again but I have the worst track record with MMO's. EVE is actually the one I played for the longest, 9 whole months. In that time I saw (I think) 4 war decs, about a dozen corp ops (including at least 3 instances of utterly destroying an asteroid belt with our mighty mining ships), lots of pewpew and multiple big fights. It certainly isnt boring, just tedious at points.
If I want to fight what should i train?
I am on a quest where I have to kill the leader of the angel pirates. he has a spider drone. i have a medium slot propulsion damper but I need to train a couple electronics skills (or just 1) but I"m not sure how to train skills. It looks like i have to buy skills when i click on the tab but I'm wondering if the price changes depending on what station i'm at?
Do I sound like I have no idea what I'm doing? probably, but I'm super new.
Nm my previous post. I'm starting to get the hang of this but um... Do I gotta be at the corp home station to apply to the corp?

Skills are trained by purchasing skillbooks (the cost does indeed differ from station to station. If you're in the Shihuken system, Senda is the nearest place for cheap skillbooks) Once you purchase them, right click on the skillbook when it's in your inventory and it'll vanish and start training the skill.
As for what to train, it never hurts to train High Speed Maneuvering to enable the use of proper afterburners and (I think it's called) Energy Manipulation to get access to cap boosters. As for weapons training, it's usually based around which type of ship you fly since they offer bonuses to a set type of weapon. The list goes like:
Caldari: Missiles
Gallente: Hybrid/Drones
Minmatar: Railguns
Amarr: Energy
And yes, you have to be in the home station to apply.
Edit: Dont wall of text something then read the next post.

Just so everyone's aware, my subscriptions to EVE are currently running out soon and am hoping to get a new Director in the corp to help out with new apps and maybe get some ops going. As always, I'll be back. EVE never leaves my sight for too long.
Thanks CES, I'm minmatar so I'm going to start on those rail guns. I should probably finish the tutorial missions before making my way to shihuken right? I'm at Eystur/haudaugago right now and it might be a long trip.

Just a small correction, Minmatar bonuses are for Projectile Weapons, meaning Autocannons and Artillery. :)

Yes, finish the tutorials. You get two free frigates from it, a great boost to start out.

Well, if you want to stick with Gallente, then your best option is the Brutix (http://www.towneh.net/albums/eve/trinity16aa_brutix.jpg) for now. It's a Gallente Battle Cruiser. I personally prefer the Myrmidon, but that is a more drone intensive ship. The Brutix is basically the big brother of the Thorax. I can post the fitting I would use a bit later if you like, or you can google some.
:)
I second the nomination of the Brutix as a replacement for your Wangship. It'll serve you well till you get your hands on a 'Thron.

Brutix > Myrmidon ;)
On EVE, I'm a drone hater by character and choice. :p
Ain't gonna let no drone do the dirty work for me; I get my own hands dirty and damn loving it.
Zrikz
12-23-2008, 08:18 AM
I will give the Brutix a looksie. I'll take any recommendations for fittings. I'm using some medium turrets or whatever ya wanna call it and thats it really. Medium shield I think.
OldeWolf
12-23-2008, 08:27 AM
Brutix:
High: All T2 medium turrets
Mid: 1x Webber 3x cap recharger
Low: armor repper, t2 dmg mod, DCU II, 2x dmg resist (forgot mod name)
I think the above is correct.
One thing, Gallente is NOT a shield tanking race do don't even bother shield tanking them. Sure, there are a very few ships that can shield tank but overall, do not bother.

Since you're going hybrid turrets, the damage mod will increase your damage to the rats.
Also DCU II = Damage Control Unit II (check it on market for stats). It can save your arse when you need most saving.
Webbers, since some rats loves to come close to you and make it hard for you to hit them at close range should you use rails against them, webbing them slows them down, increasing your chance to hit them better.
You can PM me with any questions or I can come back here once in a while and help you out since I'm a Gallente pilot myself with an Astarte to my name.

Money starts flowing in during lv 2 missions and the real money starts coming in during lv 3 and 4 missions. Just build up your skills while you milk the lv 2 missions to get a brutix. That's what I did.
If I was still subscribing to EVE I would help you out isk wise (got about 2.5 billion isk or so). But Economy wont let me. :(

If I come back, the only thing I have to look forward to is finish up the last part of the trainings to fly a Paladin (which will take about another month of training with nothing to do until it's finished).
Talk about excellent demotivation with all that slow training time. :(
Sl1pstream
01-06-2009, 04:10 PM
I solved that. I installed Capsuleer on my iPhone so that I know when to actually play the game. I'm mostly going to play missions around the time a skill is done training. I want to fly the Nemesis build I planned on flying last time. It'll take a while though.
OldeWolf

Yeah but with the paladin, I dont have laser skills up to par, let alone T2 yet. I'm a gallente pilot and only the Paladin and Astarte appeals to me. I've been flying the astarte for a few years now doing tons of missions. PVPing doesn't interest me partly due to the fact that hearing people loves to demand mic and voicing stuff to each other. Marketing...what would marketing do for me other than make me money towards nothing really.
So in the end, only blowing stuff up in missions with nice fancy ships is all that is left for me in that game. Wish they had more stuff for people like me to do.

Make sure your Eve game playing PC has a gfx card that can at least support shader model 2.0 graphics:
Eve Online to cancel support for classic graphics client with March expansion. (http://myeve.eve-online.com/devblog.asp?a=blog&bid=615)
Preferably you would want to make sure your card can handle SM 3.0, as they are considering the dropping of support of SM 2.0 in the end of 2009:
In the Winter Expansion 2009 we are considering discontinuing support for ShaderModel 2 and make the minimum specification ShaderModel 3(GeForce 6 class cards or ATi x1300 or compatible)

Well, if you are interested, faction warfare is not a bad place for PvP. It's alot more free-for-all, so you can roam single or in a small party with friends, and there are many war targets to find.
You can also join large gangs, if that is your thing too.
People still do want you to listen in to instructions, a mic is not necessary. It is not a problem for me to type out instructions to you if you'd like, as they are generally short and sweet.
Faction warfare is full of newbs and experts, so you can fit in regardless of skill level. If you come back, join the CoG channel or message Akira Mio in game. Evemail might actually be best.

It's not really about the PVPing (I don't pvp on EVE, don't want to lose my astarte and +1billion isk worth of mods :p)
It's more about the CCP's stance on pampering the salvaging thieves. Pisses me off to no end as a Mission runner. So I voted with my wallet for now and not pay for it.
Shandor

Just wanted to bump this to make sure that all CoG'ers were in the in-game channel "CoG", so at the very least we can keep in touch in-game.

Wormholes, for one, will be very accessible, as I understand them, they will have varying degrees of difficulty and content, and they are also changing up how probe scanning works, making it easier to find them. Also in the Expansion are epic mission arcs, if PvE is your bag.

Did you catch some of the proposed ideas for future expansion packs on the tournament webcast this weekend? New COSMOS missions, personal Deadspace, Subsystem targeting and Joystick controlled flight for the ships. The flight idea is the one that has me most interested since it'll put a lot more fun into the game.
I've played the 14 day trials a few times before...and honestly I'm not sure. I LOVE the idea of playing EVE but I'm not sure how to really get into playing. I've done mining a whole lot, made a couple million ISK but it gets boring after a while.

To be honest, the best way to play EVE is to get into a fairly big player corporation. One that does everything from PvP, to missions to mining. If all you do in EVE is mine, I wouldn't have been playing off and on for the past four years. There's so much out there to do, all you have to do is find the right environment, and pick a direction.
I'll be the first to say that the CoG corp is not big, and honestly, for a new player, isn't going to find much excitement. However, I encourage everyone on CoG to join the channel at least, and ask questions about the game there, most of us are very happy to help newer players with some of the more complicated mechanics.
I'd even suggest some of the newer players take a look at joining EVE University (http://www.eve-ivy.com/), which focuses on hands-on training of all elements of EVE. They're a real good bunch there, to be sure.
Did the Certificates arrive with the Quantum Rise update? They're quite neat.
Also, the Kestrel production line is back up and running, there's still demand for the damn things.

All the time you spend on CoG? ;)
EVE's been sounding cooler and cooler to me, but I don't know if I want to get into anything that intense or regularly time consuming. I've had problems with that kind of thing escaping my free time and encroaching upon my "serious" time (okay, so I was playing a MUD in class over the wireless internet... I felt that was taking it to far, so I quit playing. Soon after the admins shut it down because the didn't have the time to keep it up, and I still miss it :( I don't want to get that involved in something again) Yes, I'm lame

Mining, trading can be pretty laid back and don't really require large investments of time for a single gaming session. Missions are fairly short for the most part.
There is a sort of weird disconnect between time spent in game and progress. Skills can only be gained in real-time and nothing you do can speed them up. However, you make more ISK (currency) the more time you spend in game. And ISK can buy anything, including game time.

Are the T3 ships out yet?
The only thing that would convince me to go back is how .... much more powerful the whatever new custom making ships are vs my Astarte. If those ships are still small and tougher than my Astarte, then I'll have to come back and take a look.
Felonous
04-25-2009, 09:06 PM
Not sure about the T3 ships, but today my corp put together a test run through one of the harder wormhole systems. The Sleeper NPC battleships there ate my Nighthawk command ship ($300 mill isk) and a couple battleships. We figure to run it correctly we'd need another 10-15 battleships in the group (we had 10) and everyone would need to be able to remote armor repair.
Once you get more than a couple Sleeper battleships spawned the fight gets very VERY nasty, they put out such insane DPS. Even with a 80%+ shield resist one of the shots landed on me was for over 2500 damage. Under that kind of barrage my shield melted even with remote shield rep being done from a couple other ships.

I've some questions about T3 Strategic Cruisers and hopefully someone will know.
When I'm looking around EVE online forums, why don't I see anyone selling those ships or parts of the ship?
What are their average price ranges? (I don't want off the wall guessing if possible)
How good are they compared to Command ships? (Namely the Astarte)
Can they handle Lv 4 missions as well as the Astarte/command ships and Battleships/Mauradars?
Which is better, Legion or Proteus? (I can fly either one)
Thanks in advance for any answers.

Actually, I can do the prices. heh...
In Jita, you can get a Legion for 405mil and a Proteus for 378mil. They're for sale on the market, so you don't have to use the contract system. The extra parts with the same name as the ship (I assume they are extra parts), run around 50-150mil each.

For a start, I'd say to make sure you do the tutorial missions, since they'll give you a decent start on learning the basics of the game. The help channel is also useful for questions. The newbie corp you get stuck in might also be good for questions, but they might also just tell you to go to the help channel and ask there. hah.

Do what I do. Load up EveMon, goto the ship browser tab, highlight the ship you want fitting help on. At the top of the window click the 'Battleclinic Loadouts' link. In the new window that appears, sort the loadouts by rating. Use one of the top 5 rated loadouts.
kyrieee
08-19-2009, 07:53 AM
Well... a lot of those fittings are quite old and don't translate to the current game balance, and also the thing with fits is that they're highly situational. Battleclinic can give you an idea of how to fit a ship in the end you need to come up with something that fits your skill set and what you plan to do with the ship. You really want to understand why you should fit a ship one way or the other. Try asking some people ingame =)

Is it possible to get a small (I use this term loosely) gathering of CoG EVE players to start to plan and ultimately conduct a huge mining operation in 0.0/nullsec space? Or a really, really low low-sec system?
http://i34.tinypic.com/28knwy.jpg
The lower the system's security, the higher the value of the ore mined. There's no money to be made in 1.0 space.
Obviously, if we start to lay down the groundwork for doing this, we're going to need some fire power in compliment the operation's mining vessels in case of attack. Torain has an Orca we can use (I've yet to ask him about this), and I can either use my Retriever to mine or my Mammoth to haul (16,000 m3 cargo capacity). And I'm sure Brass Gecko would be willing to participate.
Thoughts?
Goronmon
10-07-2009, 11:46 AM
I'm not sure a casual low-sec mining op is the best idea. You can still make plenty of money just mining Veldspar.
Shadowstorm
10-07-2009, 11:49 AM
Yeah but it feels more fun mining out in the middle of nowhere begging for an attack :P. Plus there's tons of more ISK to be made, obviously.
We're gonna need a hefty amount of fire power.
Goronmon
10-07-2009, 11:53 AM
Not just firepower, but ECM ships as well. Need to be able to protect people from tacklers at a moments notice. And would require a non-trivial amount of coordination (random jump spots with people pre-aligned and jumping at the first sign of trouble).
I'm not sure I want to risk my ships for something like that.
Shadowstorm
10-07-2009, 11:54 AM
Bah, that sucks :(. Looks like we'll be staying in .5 space.
BrassGecko
10-07-2009, 03:22 PM
I'm not leaving .5 for mining yet! However, I do have a Badger Mk2 with a 12,500 m3 capacity now, so I can add a boost to hauling.
As for lack of profit in higher security... the stuff I've been manufacturing with my shares of minerals has been pulling in nearly a million a day on the market, and I'm still just making fairly basic stuff!

DD = Doomsday Device (http://wiki.eveonline.com/wiki/Item_Database:Ship_Equipment:Turrets_&_Bays:Doomsday_Devices). Prior to Dominion, the largest class of ship, the Titans (http://wiki.eveonline.com/wiki/Item_Database:Ships:Titans), were able to equip a special weapon that, when fired, would deal a very high amount of damage to all ships on the grid. It nuked everything Battleship sized down, though some Battleships could tank the blast if they had the right modules. DD's can only be fired once an hour and cannot jump for 10 minutes after firing one.
Going forward, Doomsday Devices will only fire at one target, but will be a definite kill, no matter the size.

I played for a handful of months in 2008, back when we put together an EvAv corporation before the whole meltdown that lead to CoG. A few wars with other corporations that had it out for our little group slowed things down, and I never really kept up with it afterwards. They already had warp-to-zero, but I think the skill queue is new (to me). Maybe I should give it another shot.

I'm back playing again. I'm having more fun than I have in my last few brief stints in EVE. I've raised all my learning skills to level 4, and am currently taking the time to get Learning to level 5, although I probably won't be doing any of the attribute specific ones any time soon. They can stay at level 4.
Somebody gave me 40 million ISK just randomly, which was nice. I used some of it to upgrade from my Rifter frigate, which was getting a bit obsolete. I now have the awesome but butt ugly Rupture cruiser.
I hear the real fun of this game is joining a Corp, but I haven't done that yet. Most seem to demand that players have millions of skill points. I've only just breached the 1 million mark.
Edit: I just want to add that I love the way CCP conduct their business. They never charge for expansions, you can pay your subscription with in-game money, and they seem to have GMs online 90% of the time who are more than happy to talk to you and help out. Eve probably isn't the most fun MMO I've ever played, but it's certainly the one that I feel best about giving my money to.

Frigates are needed in PvP
Bigger isn't better in EVE, it's just bigger (and more expensive) :)
6 frigates can easily swarm and kill a battlecruiser but in other MMOs you wouldn't see a bunch of low level guys kill a high level guy
Basically, larger guns do more damage but they can only hit big things. The larger the ship the slower it moves and locks targets; that means that small ships are ideal for tackling larger ships

So, Lint of Death and I plan to make a Suicide Shuttle Pilgrimage to New Eden this evening.
The current plan is to meet at Gergish at 7:30pm EST. The goal is to make it to the planet in New Eden and run back. There's a medical facility in Gergish at the Royal Amarr Institute School, which would allow for multiple tries.
At the moment, after Antem, 3 ships have died in the last day along that route. That number was 1 about 10 minutes ago, so it may or may not be a suicide trip One interdictor paying attention along the way could certainly make life short! Anyone else want in on this? I plan to make an alt for it so I don't have to worry about implants and such.

The last time I went on a CoG lowsec hunting trip it ended up with me dead and a rather large negative security rating.

If you like doing the missions, pick a corporation and look up their agents. They'll start to repeat after a bit, but they're certainly a way to make money. Alternatively, start looking at manufacturing, trade (my choice!), mining, exploration... The real trick is figuring out what things you want to try, and then figuring out how to fund them.
Or, update your clone, fit a cheap ship, and see if you can make it to the edge of the map and back or something! :p

There's more than one tutorial agent for each race. I suggest going through all their missions. If you ask in corpchat I'm sure someone will tell you the agent names, otherwise I think the character bunyip has them in his bio

It's a lot better than it was in the past but you still need to be the kind of person who looks for information on their own to learn the game properly. In EVE every day is a learning day :)
They key to enjoying the game is playing together with other people. Also make sure you try PvP; risking your ship is really scary but that's part of what makes it so great.

There are corps that you can join who will take you in, teach you the ropes and introduce you to whatever aspect of the game you're looking to enjoy.
I've pretty much given up on EVE. I've given it a fair chance and I got the hang of it pretty well last time I played, but it simply doesn't suit my play style.
I got to the point where it was going to take around a week until my next skill trained up, and any time I was playing just felt wasted since all I was gaining was money, and I already had loads of that (some guy in the newbie channel just dumped a load of ISK into my account randomly).
