I came across this site while reading a page that was on digg.
http://movielens.umn.edu
It is free, and seems pretty amazing so far. After you sign up (btw, don't use spaces in your username...I did, and it pretended that it created my account, but actually didn't), you just need to rate 15 movies and you'll get full access to the site.
I just spent half an hour and rated almost 200 movies, and I have to say it has a pretty damn good idea of films I like. To start out, I decided to pull up the list of Most Often Rated movies, as I could be sure there would be a lot I have seen. Sure enough, as I'm rating and going page-after-page deeper, their predictions for how I would rate each movie start getting almost perfect. Every now and then it will show an oddball comedy that I love but predict I would give it 3/5 stars. We're still getting to know each other.
It has a lot of interesting ways to analyze you. My favorite feature so far is that it classifies you based on your reviews. For example, I belong to the Lion Group: "Lions enjoy modern, quirky, fantastic flicks. And hunting prey". Currently, it seems the Gorilla Group are the most common type profiled. The really cool thing is that I can pull up the Lion Group and view movies that other Lions like.
I haven't spent more than an hour with it so far, but it would be great if a lot of COGs joined the site. Your "buddies" can be used to influence your searches for new movies.

I wonder if this has anything to do with an article I read in Wired a few months ago. It was about how Netflix has some prize money that will go towards who can make the best movie recommendation engine. Quite cool.

I've used movielens for... probably 8 years now. It's a fantastic site and its recommendations seem to be very accurate.

Recently I've noticed that it will say I have reviewed ZERO movies, and that I belong to the Snake Group. But when I follow a link, it fixes to my correct count and group. This ever happen to you?

Can't say that it has, although I don't use the site as much lately as I used to. I'll have to get back to it though since I know I've seen probably a hundred movies since the last time I went through ratings.

Ha, when I had originally hit reply to this, there were no comments, but now that I'm posting, there are a few. (I'd gotten distracted rating movies, though I'm only at 63 right now.)
Fun site! I'm also in the Lion Group! :)

I just found another movie recommendation site. It's called Criticker (http://www.criticker.com/). Also cool. I'm up to 200+ ratings on it now. :)

Apparently I've had an account there (MovieLens) since 2004, and I rated 417 movies back-when. Damn, I need a life.

lol, then you should be using it to find new movies to watch while you are getting a life!

I have the Blockbuster 'Rent any one thing for as long as you want' deal. My only life right now is inside Fallout 3. Speaking of which, off to play it!

Yeah, I use BB Online....right now I'm going through Heroes on Bluray sense I had better things to do when it originally aired.
And also, fuck you. I'm jealous. I played 4 hours of LittleBigPlanet last night with my wife and didn't get to touch Fallout3. Now I have to spend all day at work reading about other people's adventures while I wait to go home and investigate the super market for a survival guide quest.

Doesn't Flixter do the same thing?

Yeah I believe it does. So does Blockbuster.com, and they've be alright with most of their suggestions. But based on accuracy and social community features, I am enjoying movielens immensely.
Speaking yet again of BB, I think I'm going to join Netflix to take advantage of the new 360 interface. Anybody know of ways I could export my 500+ BB queue and import it into Netflix??

"You are a member of the Alligator Group - Alligators enjoy the dramatic, the sad, the powerful. One of their favorite movies is Winged Migration, but it makes them hungry."

lol
The animal choices seem a bit odd. It's almost like they're being serious, but then they end each one with a joke. I like it, but don't quite get why it is there. :)

In my hunt to export my Blockbuster queue, I came across this service that will export/import your movie ratings. I hadn't even thought of that, but it sure made me happy! All of those BB movies I rated can be moved right into movielens and netflix.

I have further development with SaveMyRatings (http://savemyratings.com/), which I have created a new thread (http://www.colonyofgamers.com/cogforums/showthread.php?p=68981#post68981) for....

This is a pretty fun site, I guess I'm in the Gorilla Group
"Gorillas are ground-dwelling herbivores that watch a blend of classic sci-fi and comedy."
