Just a couple months before gamers get their hands on the PC version of Final Fantasy XIV (sorry PS3 users, you have to wait until March) and we're finally getting the full list of classes in the game. Each class falls into one of four groups: Disciples of War (fighter types), Magic (wizardly types), Land (grower types) and Hand (crafter types). The full class roster:

Disciples of War
* Pugilist
* Gladiator
* Marauder
* Archer
* Lancer

Disciples of Magic
* Conjurer
* Thaumaturge

Disciples of the Land
* Miner
* Botanist
* Fisher

Disciples of the Hand
* Carpenter
* Blacksmith
* Armourer
* Goldsmith
* Leatherworker
* Weaver
* Alchemist
* Culinarian

Final Fantasy XIV will be released for the PC on September 30, and for the PS3 in the spring.

I´ve got litle experience with games like these so have no clue how a leatherworking class would work.

But if there´s one MMO I´m ever going to play in the near future it´s probably this.

Holding out for the Baker class is a longstanding joke in this genre. Looks like they finally got their wish in the Culinarian. :p

I don't know how I can play this game as everyone tells me I have no class :)

They took most of the crafting skills from XI and made them classes, with Armourer and Botanist being the only ones that are completely new. From the disciplines of the Land and Hand, that is. I wish there were more mage types, as the two now are essentially a healer/nuker hybrid and a buffer/debuffer hybrid. Eh, by the time I get to play I think I'll still start as a Conjurer.

I'm leaning toward Conjurer for my main combat class....you do get to change classes on the fly in this one right?

From what they've said you change class simply by changing your weapon, which can be done any time you're not in combat. That was a couple of months that I read that, though, with the game not even out yet things could change.

So you've essentially got 7 combat classes and 11 different things to keep you occupied when you don't want to do combat....that's nice.

I like the idea. Then again, I also had a Grandmaster Tailor way back in UO.

"I'm making hats, bitch. Go do dungeon runs somewhere else." :D

I think UO still has the best MMO crafting system. If you want a sword, you make a sword. If you want a slightly different sword, you can make a scimitar or a katana or something. If you want a better sword, you make it out of a better material. I have absolutely no idea why MMO crafting isn't always just a more evolved version of this.

I enjoyed the UO crafting system a lot. Especially since you could have alts that provide for your main combat characters. I had a Lumberjack/Woodworker who cut trees and fashioned wood into furniture, shields, etc. I had my Miner/Blacksmith who mined for ore and refined it into ingots and weapons/armor, and my Tailor/Alchemist to make clothing and create potions and poisons.

They gave me plenty to do while my main Mage/Swordsman/Archer took time off from PvP and dungeon runs. All in all, my crafting alts made most of the money for my main. Once you had a vendor, you could sell GM-produced crafts and supplies for a good profit.

I loved my Tailor. He was a GM alchemist and poison maker as well. When people gave me shit or tried to PK me, I would whip out my GM-poisoned Kris, stab them once, and run. They usually died a few seconds later. It was hilarious seeing people decked out in plate and bone armor get murdered by a guy wearing fancy lad clothes and no armor.

Waaait a minute! Call me MMO clueless... but how the hell can a Fisher or a Goldsmith fight monsters? Throw fish at them or blind them with shiny things?! Seriously, someone explain this to me please.

They don't.

Only the Magic and War groups do combat. The other ones are a fancy way of saying crafting.

FreeRealms did the same thing. "WE HAVE A BILLION CLASSES!!!!" when only a few of them are combat based.
I am a bit shocked by there being only 2 caster classes.

I am assuming Puggilist is Monk, Gladiator is Tank, Marauder is Thief, Ranger is Ranged DPS, and Lancer is for curing boils.

A bit surprised at only 7 classes. It seems a bit low, considering how many different classes XI had. I just hope that the 7 classes are distinct and each one is interesting to play.

As someone who is playing in the beta right now, I can safely say that it's all good. But that's all I can say for now. :D
